Mike Patton. Great range and dexterity, and can do all sorts of dirty things to my brain.

And by vocalist I mean an actual singer (not rapper).

Just out of interest, why the vehement denial of rappers and MCs?

some majors on my list have already been mentioned. all range and emote and big boom. this list is of menfolks with a certain kinda loverly austerity/scrubbed earth quality.. listening to the raged out stumble.. finds just the right spot in my ears/brain

Got too many to think about, but for rock, I've been a pretty big Roy Wood fan for the past couple decades.
Classic: Elton John. Sir Elton is simply without equal.
Me too on that. Liked him since I was a kid. Funny, that guy was just supposed to play the piano.
Although in a surprise second place my next favourite is Gilbert O'Sullivan...
Him too. He's got a "flow" to his lyrics you don't hear in a lot of stuff, but I'm not sure if it's all his writing.

I'll second Mr. Mojo Risin and raise you Brendan Perry, Bruce Dickinson, and Geoff Tate.
