Pretty much anything by Ennio Morricone, the guy is a genius - but especially Once Upon a Time in America and Fistful of Dollars (love the Pocket Watch theme)

Most atmospheric opening music EVER has to be Where Eagles Dare.

I didn't see Trainspotting as I flicked through the postings before me - that album was my going out music* for about 2 years!!

Most recently I was very taken with Iggy Pop's sountrack for Johnny Depp's film The Brave.

*You know - the music you always put on to gee yourself up before you go out, while your having a few drinks/spliff/lines (whatever yor poison is) and doing your make up / waiting for gf/bf to do her/his makeup etc. Unfortunately, where I'm from, that was often the best part of the evening

Favorites include:
Out of Africa
Somewhere in Time
How did I miss this thread? Of course, I was unnecessary, Fratpack so nails it immediately.

Not really a classic, but the soundtrack to City of Angels is spot on I think.
I love this one also.

The Soundtrack to "Civil War" by Ken Burns
It really only has one brilliant choice, but Ashokan Farewell is so haunting that I am convinced it is what made the show a hit.

Most atmospheric opening music EVER has to be Where Eagles Dare.
I'd forgotten about that one, but it is remarkably evocative.

My own overlooked favorite is Meet Joe Black, a perfectly terrible film with a brilliant score by Thomas Newman.

I also like the soundtrack album for thirtysomething, which is about as good as television scoring ever got.

3. Fried green tomatoes,
4. Venus im Pelz,
5. The road to Mecca

Anyone else like them?

I love any Movie that has work by Hans Zimmerman.

Pulp fiction and Kill Bill 1 and 2 have great soundtracks.
Quentin Tarintino has great taste in music!!!!!

I also like the music from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Hero.
And several Anime movies like Ghost in The Shell.

And of course, RoadHouse. I love Jeff Healey.

I like James Horner's work (Titanic, Braveheart)
Danny Elfman (The Nightmare Before Christmas- including providing the singing voice for Jack Skellington, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, Planet of the Apes, Batman, etc.)
Hans Zimmer (The Rock, Crimson Tide, The Lion King, Gladiator, The Prince of Egypt)
John Williams (Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Jaws)
Cliff Martinez (Solaris)
Clint Mansell (Requiem for a Dream, Pi)

I've still got a soft spot for The Transformers the Movie Soundtrack (Vince DiCola and Stan Bush among others), always liked the Crow soundtrack (various artists), the Matrix soundtracks (Rob Dougan among many others), and the two films that Trent Reznor has produced soundtracks for (Natural Born Killers, Lost Highway)

I like the soundtrack to Immortal Beloved but that's just Beethoven. Amadeus, too, but that's mostly Mozart.

Someone else mentioned Final Fantasy VII, and if we're going to throw in video games and anime... Nobuo Uematsu (composer for most of the Final Fantasy series), Yoko Kanno (Cowboy Bebop, Gundam Wing, Escaflowne, Ghost in the Shell: SAC), Yuzo Koshiro (ActRaiser), Koji Kondo (The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Brothers), Harry Gregson Williams (Metal Gear Solid), Michiru Yamane (Castlevania, Suikoden), and Hiroki Kikuta (Seiken Densetsu) are all good

NCBear threw in Les Miz, as well. I wasn't a big fan of the movie score but I do like the Broadway soundtrack. Probably my favorite musical. In that vein, I also like the 90s Disney soundtracks, Aladdin, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Beauty and the Beast, etc. Mostly done by Tim Rice, Alan Menken, Stephen Schwartz.. with some assistance by Elton John, Phil Collins, Hans Zimmer and others.
