In this world, as I get older I find myself increasingly amazed by the amazing and diverse planet we inhabit and how our shortsightedness as a species is putting that diversity at risk...
My 'top 20' man made and natural spots....that have made my jaw drop over the years as they come to me and in no particular order, except perhaps #1 :
- Sunset at Angkor Wat
- Sunrise at Machu Picchu
- The humble devotion of Tibetan Monks at the Barkhor and the Potala Palace
- Diving a reef drop off at night and seeing my first Shark
- Taj Mahal
- Potosi mines in Bolivia
- Hong Kong harbour at sunset
- Witnessing a total solar eclipse for the first time
- Saturn's rings through a telescope for the first time
- Easter Island
- Ruins of Troy
- The raw power of a Hurricane first hand (Georges, Cuba)
- Petra
- Batu Caves
- My first solo flight (ok, not a place but memorable anyway)
- Stonehenge
- Tikal
- Patagonia
- Abu Simbel
- My first African sunrise
So many others it seems a shame to single any out...
On the flip side...a few that while
amazing inexplicably didn't quite 'blow my mind' in the way I anticipated....
- Niagra falls
- The Great Pyramid
- Terracotta Warriors
- Grand Canyon
- Chitchen Itza
- Panama Canal
- The Mona Lisa..
- Sydney Harbour Bridge
- Arenal Volcano
- Cu Chi tunnels
- St. Peters' Basillica
- The Coliseum
- Ceasar's Palace (tacky but fun though)
- Sugar Loaf Mountain
- Nazca Lines
- Baalbeck Ruins
- Tahitian Girls....
- Monasterio de las Pajas (Columbia)
- Robben Island
- Victoria Falls
In a big picture sense
nothing in this world is really disappointing except, sadly many of the people in it. These days I spend much of my time in Africa. Well, as much of it as I'm able.
