Since we have a "favorite superhero" thread here, I thought it would be appropriate to add a favorite villain one.

My favorite villains tend to be utter monsters, having little or no redeemable features. Along with by their presence alone, they evoke fear, revulsion, or hatred. Making the audience (myself, in this case) root for the hero of the tale. For me, if I'm rooting for the villain more so than the hero, I don't see that character as a "great" villain. A great character, but not a great villain.

From movies, it's Captain Vidal from Pan's Labyrinth. I can't remember a villain in recent history that is more ruthless, sadistic, or chilling as him. His actions dwarf those committed by the actual monsters in the film.Briefly seen here.

From video games, Curtis Blackburn from Killer 7. Yet again, chilling, ruthless, sadistic, and completely irredeemable. His intro is him murdering a prostitute, sipping on some wine before going into a building, and murdering 5 others, out of shear boredom (Seen Here). And that is minor compared to the other acts he committed throughout the game.

Along with SHODAN from the game System Shock. A megalomaniac supercomputer that constantly reminds you of how inferior you are to her. All being said with a stuttering, chaotic, malfunctioning voice. (heard here)

Edit, forgot to add Marlo Stanfield from the Wire. Compared to the other characters in that show that are just various shades of gray, he's the "darkest" character on the show. Only concerned with his fearsome reputation and gaining wealth, his casual attitude toward violence and other heinous acts, along with considering those acts above all other ones when it comes to dealing with other characters, makes him (and his crew) pretty terrifying. (Seen here)

So, what are your favorite villains in entertainment?

I'm not so sure this is the same thing as a villan but Wile E Coyote is my favorite. He tries so many clever ways to catch that damned Road Runner and he never succeeds -- YET he keeps right on trying!!! OK so he's a dumbass too!

The Don's-Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando, Robert DeNiro) and Michael Corleone (Al Pacino)...The Godfather and the subsequent sequels is where I learned to have a level of compassion for characters like these.

    Hannibal Lecter-Brilliant and psychotic.

Dammit, between this and someone saying magneto I am almost out of ideas except for The Joker. In every film and comic and cartoon. Between Nicholson and Ledger? A fantastic bad guy.

Oh my god yes, Agent Smith! The best thing about being me, is that there are so many me's... And Yes to Patrick Batemen as well.

Again, I love a lot of MGS villains. Revolver Ocelot probably takes the cake though. He is a badass. Laughing Octopus is one from MGS4 that I liked a lot.

    M. Bison (Dictator) is another one of my favorite bad guys. It's so delicious!

Greed, Wrath, and Lust from FMA Brotherhood. Definitely one of my all time favorite animes.

Wow, looks like I'm a tad late for this thread, you guys all ready named a lot of the best villains. I gotta say, video game wise, my favorite has to be Albert Wesker from Resident Evil. Not the movies, he's not as cool or as....chilling in the movies. As far as movies go I'd have to say hmmm. I'm really not good at picking favorites, but I'd have to say the Sith Lord in the Star Wars movies. Comic book wise I'd have to say...Sinestro definitely. Book wise, I'm not sure how many of you are fans of Anita Blake if you are tell me I'd love to hear your thoughts and share opinions, but my favorite has to be Bella Morte *shiver*

    The Kurgan

That character is the reason I could never be a serial killer. I'm antisocial enough, but my concept of violent evil is so over the top from seeing Highlander at a young age that it has no relationship to real possibility. Sure, I could be a psycho killer; But I'm never going to be an immortal personification of wrong chopping people's heads off through the centuries, so what the hell's the point?
