hung_big: I don't think I could ever pick a favourite song. I love so many bands, artists and composers that it would be much too difficult.

I have absolutely no doubt - Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, particularly as sung by a little known American named Sonny King. A haunting paean to lost love, which is somewhere most of us have been.

There really are too many choices for me at any given moment. It depends on my frame of mind at a particular time as far as what I want to hear, anything from bluegrass to classical to Irish songs to... well it's just too much. I like most music and can go from Redd Volkaert to Frank Patterson to Bob Seger to Bob Dylan to Kitty Wells without blinking and then on to Sophie Tucker. Years back someone made a tape for me that went from Pink Floyd to Peter,Paul&Mary (yes, one followed the other). They thought it was nuts and maybe it was however it worked fine for me.
Certain songs always work for me, most anything by Merle Haggard or James King(his work with Longview is also incredibley good) or Guy Clark, (especially The south coast of Texas). I guess it's better this way since I always get to stay entertained, never bored.

I could never pick a favorite either, but one that has meaning for me is Tool's "Sober". It reminds me of how f&cked up things were and why I no longer drink.

That reminds me, I was going to post the lyrics to that Tori Amos song that I love so much for you Jana, I forgot because I been so busy ... anyways now that i'm thinking about it, here they are ...

    glue
    stuck to my shoes
does anyone know why you play with an orange rind
you say you packed my things
    and divided what was mine
you're off to the mountain top
i say her skinny legs could use sun
    but now i'm wishing
    for my best impression
    of my best angie dickinson
but now i've got to worry
cause boy you still look pretty
when you're putting the damage on

don't make me scratch on you door
    i never left you
    for a banjo
i only just turned around for a poodle
    and a corvette
    and my impression
    of my best angie dickinson
but now i've got to worry
'cause boy you still look pretty
when you're putting the damage on

    i'm trying not to move
    it's just your ghost
    passing through
    i said
    i'm trying not to move
it's just your ghost passing through
    it's just your ghost
    passing through
    and now
    i'm quite sure
there's a light in your platoon
i never seen a light move
    like yours
    can do to me
    so now i'm wishing
    for my best impression
    of my best angie dickinson
but now i've got to worry
'cause boy you still look pretty
    to me
but i've got a place to go
i've got a ticket to your late show
and i'm worrying cause even still
    you sure are pretty
when you're putting the damage on
    yes
when you're putting the damage on
    you're just so pretty
when you're putting the damage on

If I had to pick just one - it would be Love Letters by Ketty Lester.

Ashlar, don't mean to hijack the topic here, but would you happen to be able to recommend a good "first taste" album of Tori Amos's for a new potential fan? Those lyrics remind me a bit of Aimee Mann, whose words thrill me.

    A good "jumping-on" point?

    Thanks!

Either her first album: Little Earthquakes
Or her third album: Boy's for Pele

The newer albums are sometimes not as accessable to people who arnt accustomed to interpreting her lyrics and style yet. Of these two ... boy's for pele tends to be a bit more somber, and Little Earthquakes has a wider range of emotional levels.

"Stronger than Death" by the Black Label Society. No contest whatsoever.

"Down Again" by Chimaira, "Simple Minded" by Dragpipe are a pair of top faves too. I recommend you all listen to them.

Like right now. Move it, dammit! :D
