While this is a nice step, I'm not nearly as enthralled as some may be. I remember reading about something that works the same way being considered a breakthrough in fighting the virus. Preventative maintenance is nice and all but can lead to reckless behaviors too. Eh, I guess I'm 50/50 here (yes, I'm the 'I want it all' type.)

When Truvada is prescribed for PEP, which is for only 28 days, they monitor your liver and kidney functions very carefully in case of toxic reaction.

It's not a drug I'd take lightly every day.

their ads are very dangerous. i called gilead(the co. that makes the drug) and they told me "yes taken when using safesex practices(condoms) etc ,it can be effective.
i had a 16 yr old and a 17 yr old ask me if they took the drug "could they bareback". very scary situation. i told them(gilead) this and it didn't phase them a bit---same pat answer.
i take truvada, so far so good, but have had friends with almost total renal failure.
by the way ,it cost $2,200 a month. thank God i have good insurance.

Again the faults in the American system are glaring.

Drugs aren't advertised here. It's up to doctors what they prescribe, not us.

And it doesnt matter if you're rich or poor. Free healthcare for all.

Long live the NHS.

I just think this is good news for at least those living with HIV. Its better than the alternative, just ten years ago. Sure the drug has side affects... I'm sure more discoveries well be in the offering, down the road. I don't happen to agree this means that barebacking can be the method of the day. Perhaps the young gays will eventually will understand that their mindset needs to change. Science is quickly moving forward... Simply because they understand human nature.

no matter how effective a preventative drug, it still shouldn't rule out a condom. better safe than sorry!

Something is better than nothing...right? Like every other drug on the market , there is risk of side effects. Yes, it's expensive, I am thankful for the Ryan White Fund. It covers my HIV meds. Im on a once a day program and have been for about 5 years now, and Truvada is one of them, Im doing fantastic.

There's another thread about people who get deliberately infected, which is quite interesting.

Yes god forbid the Americanisation of the European health care systems.

I was surprised to find out that in the uk, if the combination works, irrelevant of side effects, they won't change it.
