ETA123, from what I've read, all three religions have conflicting statements about male circumcision. It can be interpreted as "required" or not depending on the biases of the reader. Apparently our biases differ.

Anyway, male circumcision definitely predates all three religions. That's documented.

the word "circumcise" means to cut around, and circumcision means JUST removal of prepuce of both male and female. So in female, it just cut away the prepuce, or the clitoral hood. Don't confuse it with more destructive procedure, like removal all the labia.
the clitoral glans( clitoris) is homogenous to glans penis, and the prepuce coves it. If it's not retractable, its called phimosis, sometimes it need surgery for pleasure and hygiene.
There is some cheese like substance, called smegma under the clitoral hood; if it's not retractable, it may cause problems...
it's a small operation.

The fact of the matter is that the "clit" as most people call it isn't just that little piece of flesh under the hood that engorges when a woman is aroused.

The clitoris actually extends far under the skin. I believe it is actually extended around the opening of the vagina.

So, you can't really remove the clitoris fully without basically scooping out the entire woman's vagina completely down to the far inner area.

Many women dont orgasm from what is left over from the clit if the glans is removed. The sole purpose of removing the clitoral nerves under the hood is to prevent her from orgasming. Let's just get down to the fact that female circumcision under the tribal/religious umbrella is to remove the glans as well as the hood. Female circumcision medically is what the poster above has explained about it being the hood only. It's often a term that is interchangable even though there is a difference between a hoodectomy and a clitoridectomy.

Well clit removal is never necessary and it is barbaric but hood removal isnt much to sneeze at really.

I'm not considering a hoodectomy for cosmetic reasons. Anyone in the US who gets a hoodectomy never does it for how it looks before or after. Its for practicality not physicality.
