And 9 too, It's one of my favorites for sure. I love most of the characters in it. Never really got into Big Red, but the rest were pretty fantastic, and I love the Tantalus crew, Blank and all them. I also enjoyed picking Garnet as her nickname for some laughs. "Garnet! They wont suspect a thing!" Freya was my bread and butter when it came to stomping things, and she is a dragoon, which is my favorite FF job.

I did that with Garnet, too! :biggrin1:

I can still fondly recall my favorite battle line-up:

Zidane (Melee offensive and thief)
Garnet (Medic and summons)
Vivi (Magic offensive)
Quina (Melee/magic offensive and backup medic)

Also, imo, I think a common mistake people make in playing FF or any RPG for that matter is NOT making sure their main character has at least one form of a higher level healing spell to use and so if they are caught in a bind they can heal themselves or their party and then not have to worry about if their highest level healer dies and suddenly they are in it deep and low on health and thus death is imminent.

For the Final Fantasy games, what I loved most is VII & IX. X is a turn off for me, it may have been better they had just made it into a movie, for there is very less time for gameplay and always have the longest cut-scenes before you can save the game (dreading the unexpected & always uneventful power outage).

@ Pendlum: I also loved The Legend of Dragoon, Legend of Legaia & Valkyrie Profile; the first two being the most underated RPG's for the PS, Valkyrie Profile is a legend itself.

Strange....reading this thread it seems like there's not much love for the 16-bit FFs....Final Fantasy IV and VI are killer (V - not so much). Final Fantasy IV is what got me into RPGs in the first place. I'll always remember how difficult I thought the Magus Sisters were (for a while, at least)

I agree, I only really liked Auron, Rikku and Lulu a lot. And I definitely didn't like Tidus and especially Wakka. Another thing that bugged me is that they could breath under water, I just thought it was weird. And there is no reason for it what so ever. Also the WEAPON of this game was so easy to beat. I never did take on Nemisis, too much work, but the WEAPON was cake. I didn't have any trouble with the final boss either.

I do like 12 a lot, but I can only seem to play in phases. I thought the gambit system was cool at first but I prefer having more control over all of the characters and it isn't tailored to that to well, possible though. I'm sure I'll pick it up again, but probably not before I finish my FFT game.

I called Adelbert 'Bert' as his nickname - not realising he'd then be called 'Adelbert Bert' all the way through the game

I also though Balthier was way better than Vaan. There were a lot of similar names in FFXII - Penelo/Migelo, etc. More too which I can't remember haha.

PS: My sis has got loads of Black Mages tracks on her iPod :D

Hence my insistence on my backup medic - both of them had multi-target curing spells

People laughed at my line-up, but despite the characters' considerably low levels, they could take on Ozma and actually survive for several rounds before finally dying :biggrin1:

Which is more than I could say for some of those high level players

I agree. The older ones are good, they don't get enough press.

Butttt... FF7 and all related titles will always be my favorite.

As for FF10, which someone else mentioned... I'm not a fan of it. The graphics are nice.. but they don't make up for everything else that it lacks...

The music was good in 10 and the battles were fun with being able to switch between all the characters.

Has anyone played Crisis Core yet? I'm thinking of buying a PSP just for that game lol.

Its the one where you play as Zack Fair, and learn the events leading up to where FF VII begins.

I haven't played Crisis Core yet, but I've heard and read lots about it... and I've seen some stuff from it.

It looks absolutely amazing, I must say. I need to go out and get it. :) lol

That's likely because those games haven't been played by the 'FFVII generation' of gamers.

I know I sound like I'm trying to be 'hardcore,' but I've been playing RPGs since before FFI even. (OK, well Dragon Quest was about all there was at that time but, whatever) The first FF was simply a deeper, darker, more 'mature' RPG, and the 'class' system it brought was nicely reminiscent of the old pen-n-paper RPGs I'd grown up on.

FFIV is simply the finest example of an 'old-school' FF. I know all the 'true' fanboys have hard-ons for VI, and while that's a fantastic game it's just...well, okay, it's the better game, but I prefer IV for nostalgic reasons. The powerful intro (you're the bad guy!), the strong characterizations (every character has a unique personality and role), the riveting drama (you lose your party members with frequency of Star Wars characters losing limbs), the graphics (Mode 7, yaaarrr!!), the innovative battle system (ATB! Summons! And much more!!). . . yeah, Square hit a homer on that one.

I imported V, so I wasn't able to follow it without a (shitty and expensive) translation guide. I did enjoy the Job system, which was copied wholesale (and improved) for Tactics; the game was later remade for the PSOne (FF Anthology?) so I got the chance to play it to the end in English, but it just wasn't the same. . .

And yeah (polishing his 'hardcore badge of honor') I played Mystic Quest. Um, that's about all that needs to be said about that one!!

FFVII is terrific, sure, but FFIX is still my personal favorite and FFIV is my nostalgic favorite. Oh, but FFT is the series' crowning acheivement!!

Speaking of older FFs, I just bought FFII the anniversary edition yesterday. I've never played II before (I've played all of the others though), and the slicked up sprites and graphics are really nice actually. It was on sale for $10 new so I got it. It was either that, MGA, or Phantasy Star Portable. MGA was also $10, but PS was $30, and I have the demo so I can wait to get it.

I plan on borrowing Crisis Core, but I've hear nothing but good things.

The only FF I've played was FF Crystal Chronicles for GameCube. It wasn't a "real" Final Fantasy game, more of a derivative using a lot of the names and creatures from the FF universe. It was so-so in single-player and AWESOME in multi-player. The game was very polished, visually, and had very relaxing music (except for boss battles, of course). Good memories.

I didn't notice this thread before! I'm, quite surprised to see it here, really.

I'm personally HEAVILY into Final Fantasy Tactics. FFVIII is my favorite of the 3D FF's (until the 13 set comes out!) while FFVI is my favorite 2D. I'm a sucker for a cheesy love story like that found in FFVIII. The rest of the story was pretty crap (WE ALL WENT TO KINDERCARE TOGETHER AND WE FORGOT CUZ OF OUR SUMMONZ LOLZ). FFVI was just purely awesome in every aspect. FFVII was my first FF and it was great enough to draw me into the series and play alll of the other games (except 1 and 2.. and I never even bothered to get far in 5, I hated it). FFVII was also the second game to make me cry (When Alys died in Phantasy Star 4 years earlier, I cried).

I praise FFT most for the enthralling story and GREAT gameplay. I love every little aspect of the game, down to the last pixel. I especially love the latest advent in hacking it. ;)

I enjoyed FF:CC also but I had nobody to play it with... :/ So I only got halfway through.

That's one of the upsides of FFX, IMHO. Being able to call in 'reinforcements' in a way would be a wonderful boost in battle. Not to mention that training is easier, too.

And Crisis Core is awesome, but I wont be getting a DS just for it - me lacks dough

Crisis Core is PSP. The DS has FFIII, IV remakes as well as Reverent Wings, Crystal Chronicles: Echos of Time, and the two Tactics Advanced games.

The PSP has Crisis Core, FFI and II remakes, and FFT: War of the lions. Final Fantasy Dissidia comes out in November or something, and I can't wait. It looks awesome.
