Strange....reading this thread it seems like there's not much love for the 16-bit FFs....Final Fantasy IV and VI are killer (V - not so much). Final Fantasy IV is what got me into RPGs in the first place. I'll always remember how difficult I thought the Magus Sisters were (for a while, at least)
That's likely because those games haven't been played by the 'FFVII generation' of gamers.
I know I sound like I'm trying to be 'hardcore,' but I've been playing RPGs since before FFI even. (OK, well Dragon Quest was about all there was at that time but, whatever) The first FF was simply a deeper, darker, more 'mature' RPG, and the 'class' system it brought was nicely reminiscent of the old pen-n-paper RPGs I'd grown up on.
FFIV is simply the finest example of an 'old-school' FF. I know all the 'true' fanboys have hard-ons for VI, and while that's a fantastic game it's just...well, okay, it's the better game, but I prefer IV for nostalgic reasons. The powerful intro (you're the bad guy!), the strong characterizations (every character has a unique personality and role), the riveting drama (you lose your party members with frequency of Star Wars characters losing limbs), the graphics (Mode 7, yaaarrr!!), the innovative battle system (ATB! Summons! And much more!!). . . yeah, Square hit a homer on that one.
I imported V, so I wasn't able to follow it without a (shitty and expensive) translation guide. I did enjoy the Job system, which was copied wholesale (and improved) for Tactics; the game was later remade for the PSOne (FF Anthology?) so I got the chance to play it to the end in English, but it just wasn't the same. . .
And yeah (polishing his 'hardcore badge of honor') I played Mystic Quest. Um, that's about all that needs to be said about that one!!
FFVII is terrific, sure, but FFIX is still my personal favorite and FFIV is my nostalgic favorite. Oh, but FFT is the series' crowning acheivement!!
