For me, it wasn't my dad's but an uncle's. Back in the late 70's and early 80's I was frequently at the uncle/aunt's home and often spent the night. I was house sitting for neighbors in HS and found their VHS stash. I left one in the player and they returned from vacation a day early. They never said anything so I don't know if they figured it out or just thought they left it in there. At least they didn't come home while I was there watching!

Reading another post just brought back the long-forgotten memory of discovering my father's copy of The Happy Hooker. It was definitely the typical low-quality/bestseller paperback with paper that yellowed quickly. I also remember it had one of those cheap bindings that cracked or splayed open permanently if you opened it too eagerly. Which meant I could tell what pages my dad had gone back to repeatedly. I don't remember now what those were though. Just glad he enjoyed it.

My dad never sem to go to lengths to hide them. He would not leave them out either, but they'd be just put away like any other mag or book would.
