My entire town was evacuated on Monday. I was just able to return this morning. I stayed over on the coast. I was lucky, my home is fine, but a lot of my neighbors lost their homes. I feel so friggin sorry for them and others who lost their homes.

We had a mobile home retirement park near me that was wiped out. Very, very sad.

Do you personally know Jim Cantore? Will ya introduce me to him? :biggrin1: Just kidding, of course.

I had to do a wiki to see who Jim Cantore is. I don't have a TV so I rarely ever see The Weather Channel. I get more than enough weather at work.

Its been a challenging and rewarding career. My work is mainly office focused now but there were years where I spent my entire summer on field deployments.

When I was stationed at Camp Pendleton (1985 - 89), I don't remember which year it was, but one of those years, we had especially intense Santa Ana winds, and lots of wildfires. The smoke was bad, the ash fall was horrible. Headquarters decided that we all needed to be put on fire teams, so we got a 30-minute crash course in firefighting, then got assigned to teams. My team was on alert a couple of times, but fortunately, we never got sent in for front-line firefighting.

I've worked with a number of Marine, Army and National Guard units on various wildifires around the western states. These were on fire training assignments or in actual field deployments. The military units tend to be inexperienced in wildland firefighting techniques but extremely motivated once they get trained and hit the firelines. Several medallions awarded to me by various Marine commanders are among my most prized momentos of my fire years.

Hell, I'm not kidding! I've always had the hots for Jim. I'd love to meet him.

Here are the latest specs on the fires from Channel 10 news:

Witch Fire - 200,000 acres burned - 45% contained
Poomacha Fire - 39,900 acres burned - 35% contained
Harris Fire - 84,300 acres burned - 20% contained
Rice Fire - 9,000 acres burned - 40% contained
Horno Fire - 19,000 acres burned - 80% contained

It looks like it will be at least a week before the fires will be extinguished. When everybody gets together with friends during the weekend to party and have some drinks, do a rain dance for the folks here in San Diego!
