Idk why anyone would be surprised by the debate. Those people should adjust their exceptions to reality.

I think Biden did what he was supposed to do. Trump did what everyone should expect. I’m happy.

What he did was what he's always done, ignores the rules, cheats, and makes up his own. Trump agreed to a protocol up front, then sought to silence truth and obliterate facts by shouting it down, and trying to talk over Biden every time the man tried to speak. And part of the blame for letting Trump get away with it lies with Chris Wallace. If the mfkr won't play by the rules shut his fkn mike off until it's his turn to speak. Simple.

Chaos in Cleveland: Good Morning America captioned that debacle correctly. Donald Trump went to Cleveland with a deliberate plan to be disruptive, obnoxious and to talk over everyone. It was his only defensive for failing on COVID-19 and (most likely) criminally defrauding the I.R.S. on his taxes.

If Joe Biden and the Democrats are wise, they'll skip the next two debates while Donald Trump receives negative fallout from his bull in a china shop performance last night.

His base thought Trump blew Biden out of the water with his blustering, and I suspect they think bullying is admirable, a sign of strength. Hannity of course thought the free-for-all was commendable, saying, “I actually prefer a new style of debate. Maybe we’ll have it in the future one day. And that is, let them go." Nothing new came from the debacle. Is there any reason to have encores of the shit show?

Exactly. And it must not have been going his way since the sob had the gall to stoop to the old (DISPROVEN) Hunter Biden trope. With all the nepotism, grift, and profiteering he and HIS brood engage in, it's a wonder lightning didn't strike him where he stood, just for the blatant HYPOCRISY.

And to NO ONE'S SURPRISE:

Stand back, Stand by: Trump refuses to condemn white supremacists in Tuesday's presidential debate

... a fkn DISGRACE.

Quote of the night: "Will you shut up, man?" And that was probably the NICE VERSION.

It was a triumph for Biden. Here's why. Trump cannot argue facts or policy. He's too stupid. So he trash talks his opponents. He did it to the Republican candidates in 2016 and they let him.

Joe didn't. He trash talked right back. Told Trump to shut up. Told Trump he was a fool. Told Trump he was the worst president ever. Talked over him as much as Trump talked over him.

That's how you deal with a bully. You knock him on his ass. Give him a taste of his own medicine.

Biden is the first person--Dem or Rep--who has the stones to do this.

I am so proud of him.

Joe missed several easy zingers, e.g, when Trump said "You haven't done anything in 47 years," Biden should have shot back with "You haven't run a successful business in 47 years."

I would have used stronger language and expect Joe will do so in the next debate.

Biden proved he's a street fighter and more than a match for this junk bond president.

I have already voted for Biden. But, honestly I thought Trump won the debate only because he dominated the early part (which is where the largest audience will be). Biden looked frazzled and I was shocked that his team didn't prepare him for Trump's obnoxious behavior. I was hoping Biden would have looked at the camera and said early on, "This is the crazy person we have in the Whitehouse who can't even act with any decorum, or appropriate respectful behavior." Or, when Trump was attacking Democratic cities or leadership, "This is why with this President we have such devisiveness and no hope of bringing our country together whereas I can reach across the aisle and bring back productive working together in a democracy/"

Biden was more effective letting Trump dig his grave. People saw him completely unhinged. Biden, by controlling himself made a case that he is someone who wants to work to solve problems. Biden told the president of the U.S. to shut up, and called him a clown. That was pretty strong - no else has ever done that. Trump made the best argument for Biden when he refused to denounce white supremacy and gave a shout out to the Proud Boys. That is what people were talking about today - it would have been lost if Biden went off the rails too - deserved though that it was provoked.

Glad you vote, I voted yesterday as well. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

There's only so much preparation you can do to quell a toddler in tantrum. Biden DID say things very similar to what you feel he should have said. Trump acted like a child during that entire "debate". He agreed to give time and seemed to have trouble keeping that agreement, no surprise there. No surprise a guy who thinks he's a real estate mogul would attempt to steamroll as much as possible.

Biden mostly handled himself as an adult would handle themselves when trying to get their 3 yr old to go to bed.

My thoughts exactly. Furthermore, a new rule needs to be added. Only the mic of the candidate that is using his two minutes of uninterrupted time should be on. A timer should automatically turn on the other mics when the stopwatch for this is set at two minutes.

Biden won the debate on the basis of evaluating the goals of each candidate in this debate.

Biden's goal was to leave the debate in the same position as when the debate started.

Trump's goal was to make a turn in public opinion toward himself.

Biden didn't really win if debate coaches were keeping score. However, all Biden had to do was not lose any probable voters voting for him. I did not see anything Biden did or said that caused Biden to lose a significant number of probable Biden voters.

Trump on the other hand only met one criterion for the debate. That is, stir up his base and see that they vote. That Trump did. However with Trump being ten points behind in national polls and that includes many battleground states had to pick off some of Biden's probable voters.

Trump also looked like a mob boss. He looked angry or perhaps an elderly man whose health is in steep decline. At times he looked like he was recovering from a being drunk the night before. Trump never looked at the TV audience in the eye. Biden made a point to talk directly to the TV audience from time to time.

Some points that may make a difference:

Trump refused to condemn white supremacists. Biden made a point that those on the left doing violence were breaking the law and should be punished.

That is a point in Biden's favor.

Trump called Hunter Biden a drug addict. Biden simply stated that his son did have drug issues. That made Trump look like a bully that he is. Biden came across as a father concerned about his son.

Independents and Democrats would score that as a point for Biden. It doesn't matter if Trump's base gave Trump that point. Trump already had the base in hand.

Biden did a good job of critiquing the pandemic. Trump went overboard in declaring he was the best not in the US but over time and place as the greatest leader for a pandemic the world has ever seen before or will ever see in the future.

Biden kept the Democrats in line and perhaps helped his case with the Independents.

Trump's base all wet their pants while Trump was bragging, but it was not urine or poo that did it.

However, the Independents were not amused by Trump's being a braggart.

Biden wins on this by the skin of his teeth but all he had to do was break even and he did a bit more than that.

Biden:
Looked presidential
Looked like a gentleman
Looked like he had control of himself

Trump

Looked like he had a hangover
Looked like a mob boss
Looked like an elderly man who is out of control of himself

This point goes to Biden.

Without notes, these are all the exchanges that I remember off-hand. I suspect Trump's mob can come up with some exchanges they believe Trump won.

Again, Biden entered the debate with a ten-point edge. He left the debate with the same ten-point edge.

Trump also maintained his popular standing. However, Trump is in the hole ten points. He needed to pick off a few of Biden's percentages points.

I believe that Trump failed to pick off Biden voters.

Professional debate coaches can nickel and dime the debate all night and come up with various differences with the debates to tell why each one is correct.

In presidential debates, all that matters is what the debate did to the polls of likely voters.

Biden kept his big ten-point margin.

Biden won just barely!

Chris Wallace will not be the moderator for any presidential debates in the future. His performance last night was a solid F. Chris is a much too nice a man to moderate a debate with someone like Trump on stage.

As far as the election, this is by far the most important result of the debate. If a majority of undecided voters break for Biden, that will widen Biden's lead. Many of the undecided voters will also vote Democratic in other races which could doom several Republican Senators and Republican senatorial candidates. The House may go even more Democratic. State legislatures may turn from red to blue.

At two weeks before the election, if it appears that Trump is leading the Republican party into a disaster, look for some Republicans to break with Trump. Some Republican senators may prevent Trump's nominee from being confirmed if the Democrats can stall the vote that long.

But then, we don't know what next week's debate will bring. It might be Biden who keeps stepping in the cow paddies.
