I see the Poulenc was your favorite :biggrin1: . I was expecting the Barber Adagio, but I see Rubberwilli beat you to it!

Um...was that a slam against me or Barber or both? (Granted that list was composed after a night of drinking with friends and I was really drunk at that point....)

Most of my favorite music is Choral or Operatic so it's hard for me to come up with orchestral or instrumental works that are my favorites. (Voice was my major for a while so go figure...)

Absolutely not! I love the Barber Adagio I just happen to know that Prepstud also enjoys listening to it as well. Thank you for all of your suggestions.

Well since I'm performing the Poulenc in about a month it has to be on the list, since I'm listening to it quite frequently.

In the minimalist thread

Torke: Color Music - Orange
Glass: The Hours
Adams: On the Transmigration of Souls
(A very moving piece, his reflection on 9/11)

Opera - probably a little long for the I-pod but I like them very much
Adams: Nixon in China
Bartok: Bluebeard's Castle
Stravinsky: The Rake's Progress
R. Strauss: Elektra

OOOOO...I can't believe no-one has mentioned John Cage 4'33" yet. A classic of modern music and so downloadable to the I-Pod.

1 - It's already been mentioned but 'The Flower Duet' from Lakme by Delibes is possibly the most beautiful song ever made. It's hard to stick to 5 but I'll have a go

2 - Rhapsody in Blue - Gershwin
3 - O Mio Babbino Cara - Puccini
4 - Der Rache Holle - Mozart from The Magic Flute
5 - Sempre Libera - Puccini from La Traviata

They're probably a bit girly but my taste is girly.

The most moving of all symphonies written IMHO is the Leningrad symphony by Shostakovitch. I researched it a little and found out that it was written in the height of WWII by a Russian composer (imagine with that name that he would be Russian? ) He claimed that the stormy parts were representative of the Damage that Hitler was doing in order to get approval to have it performed in the communist state. Apparently, he was actually writing it about the damage that the communists did to his beloved Russia when they took over. It is one piece where you can tell by the music what his intentions are. It is light, airy and dignified then stormy but you can actually hear the will of the Russian people and determination to make it through played throughout the entire piece in the background. This is just my ramblings, it would likely sound more appealing if you read a breakdown of the music by somebody who knew what they were talking about.

Aside from that there is also Gabrelli and his music for pipe organ and brass (that should make at least 2 people here nod in agreement.)

I would have to look at some of the other songs on the list, but for now you have my strongest recommendation.
