So what's a vidalia onion in the UK? I cheated regional. :biggrin1:

Vidalia onions are more than just a variety of sweet onion -- they may actually be of several varieties, but the defining characteristic is that they are grown in a particular region of Georgia where the soils are very low in sulfur. It is this sulfur deficiency that prevents the onions from developing the strong-tasting compounds (which are sulfur compounds) and leads to an unusually sweet-tasting onion. If you took a vidalia onion from the supermarket and planted it in average soil, the onions that grew as offsets would not be as sweet.

Based on this, I am not sure that there is another term for a vidalia onion elsewhere, since vidalia onions must come from the area of (or surrounding) Vidalia, Georgia.

:)

We make "Sloppy Joes". When in the Wilkes Barre area they called them "Wampies" and I know some areas call them loose meat sandwiches.

"Loose meat sandwich"? Sounds like a horrible euphemism for lady parts!

One of the few clear-cut differences I notice between the American Northwest and Vancouver is that we use gyros (for the Greek food), and they use doner kebab. It's a little strange because I think our Turkish vs. Greek divide is about the same.

We call them yiros in central Australia, but on the east coast they're gyros. I believe they're also known as kebabs in the UK.

Not really a specific foodstuff, but I'll mention it anyway.....

"Burger King" - here in Oz the franchise is called "Hungry Jack's".

From 1971-1997 we only had it as HJ. Then - after a legal dispute - for a few years, we had some open under the BK name while the HJs still had the HJ name. Then - after another legal dispute - BK left Australia and now the BKs are renamed HJ.

I know I've explained that very poorly, so please hold the line while I put you through to our Wikipedia department:
