For more than one reason which I am not here to share I am trying to stay away of meat, be it white, red or whatever but I have to admit that once in a while my body feels the need, especially red meat, it used to give me a boost which reflects also on the south edge of my body, as if there is something in red meat which can't be found anywhere else.

Question being, I eat and love beans, I eat eggs but wondering which other protein sources can I add to get that boost effect red meat used to get me.

thank you

Okay the human body needs 22 amino acids to make all the proteins it requires. It makes 14 of them from other organic compounds. The other 8 are your eight essential amino acids. Your body doesn't make them. You must eat them.

Eating a grain (wheat, corn or rice) with a legume (peanuts, beans, chickpeas) gives you all eight essential amino acids. It's not necessary to eat both at the same meal. Then again why not? Rice and beans. Hummus stuffed pita. Peanut butter sandwich. Bean soup and bread. Nachos and bean dip.

Not going to hurt you to eat red meat or other animal protein once in a while if you're transitioning to a vegan diet. It's either that or go cold turkey. If we could get people to limit animal protein to one meal a week oh my how the world would change.

Eggs aren't vegan.

I like and eat a lot of kind of legumes, we use to cook them with pasta but to limit the carbs intake (to control body weight which by my age starts to become harder - as if it has even been an easy task...), I also eat fruit and veggies but I can tell, that very once in a while I get it, that red meat has a different effect on my body (just to say one morning wood is much harder ).

I am no vegan but am just concerned about animals, I'd rather like to see them alive and free than on a grill (and am not judging those who eat it), I like eggs and it's already hard to find free standing chicken ones (can't think of those cages...).

Back in time meat was a luxury and even once a week was not what every family could afford, luckily I never faced this issue but my family comes from such heritage, some of our Italian traditional dishes are famous just because they contain meat, think of the Neapolitan ragu or Genovese gravy, they both contain meat but it was a tough piece of meat which had to cook for hours to release taste to the sauce and to become tender enough to be easy to chew...

Thank you for your reply and advise

Well there are meat substitutes cultured from beans (tofu and tempeh) some of which are seasoned and packaged to taste like meat. You might try those.

Seitan is pretty good if you aren't gluten intolerant.

Can either buy wheat gluten to mix yourself, or literally wash flour. This is seitan
Textured soya chunk, easy to cook with and easy to flavour.
Tempeh can be hit or miss
Tofu
- Silken blitz it with berrys for protein ice cream etc
-Firm use as meat replacement when cooking, press the water out and chill if you want it firmer.

One thing though when trasitioning, be wary of how much fibre you are eating. Transitioning into a vegan diet will generally see your fibre intake rocket (you will have a toilet adjustment period) and also you can relax on going wholemeal etc all the time as vegan, veganphysique summed it up well in one of his vids.
