Textbooks, especially those before the anti-circ stuff came about will describe the normal penis has having the foreskin which retracts by itself during erection leaving glans fully exposed.

This is perhaps the "ideal" foreksin, not the average/normal foreskin description. I think that there is a large percentage of males whose foreskin remains over part or all of head during erection (unless manually retracted).

I think it is a combination of genenetics and how you masturbate. Your your masturbation methose constantly stretches the skin, it is likely to remain long during puberty.

During puberty, the foreskin can shorten substantially for some guys, and not shorten much for other guys.

There is not much serious material about the foreskin around because most of the serious medical material deals with foreskin problems and circumcision, and not spending much time describing the normal foreskin variations and whether some activities resyult in a longer adulhood foreksin or not.

Yes, that's right, at least in my case. As a teenager it went from covering all the head (when soft) to only about half. And as soon as I start to get hard it retreats completely.

Yes, people ask me if I'm cut too, but mine does not stay behind the head - and in fact won't stay back for very long at all - but it does leave at least half of the head exposed. And I have seen circumcised men with more skin than I have. So all sorts of variations are possible.

Some of it is the shortness of the frenulum, some of it is the characteristics of your particular closure/muscle tissue at the praeputial sphincter (mucocutaneous junction), some is environmental (how you wank, whether your foreskin was often retracted/never retracted as a child, etc.). I've often said I could differentiate between an American uncut guy and a European uncut guy in the locker room, since the way they were likely handled as kids is so different (based on recommendations of respective medical professionals).

A buddy of mine in England did an unscientific survey of people he knew from work, gym, school and other places and concluded that -- over there, at least -- about 7 out of 10 guys normally remained covered when hard. Most could manually retract easily, some could not.

Just human variation, but you can influence it to some degree.

I think it depends upon how slack your foreskin is and its thickness.

As my memory before cut, I had quite a long foreskin, however, it was very thin and loose. I often found it stayed all the way back behind the cockhead by itself when I took out my wiener to pee.
