BTW @AussieMark , it would have been interesting to also ask about the culture one was born into. Parents might feel huge pressure to follow tradition, or don't feel socially pressed to do so, depending on place and time.

For me, being born in (French) Montreal culture in the 50's, there was a pretty serious push to get that foreskin off. I have NO idea why my parents chose not to. I don't have any idea if my dad was cut or not - it wasn't something one would discuss in our family. But the end result of whatever was happening was that I was left 'natural'.

Most guys, as evidenced in gym and so forth as I grew up, were cut. But I'd moved from French Montreal to English Toronto by that point so that's a whole 'nuther culture. I may just have been the oddity due to not having been born in the more English culture.

I think circumcision should be elective surgery for adults, 18 or older, or possibly a few years younger with appropriate consultation and only based on their own decision.

Routine infant circumcision should not be legal. Infant or child circumcision should only be done when medically necessary and immediately necessary, and what determines necessity should be well defined by an impartial and unbiased medical community. There should be no special compensation to the doctor, the hospital, or the insurance company when circumcisions are completed.

Religion should not play a role in infant circumcision, people who need/want to be circumcised for religious reasons can do so when they reach an appropriate age outlined above. Everyone does or should have freedom of religion, but forcing circumcision on someone who does not have the ability to choose whether or not to be circumcised, or to choose their religion, could prevent them from membership and practicing the religion of their choice as a future and therefor infant circumcision potentially strips that infant of the freedom to practice the religion of their choice.
