News Corp(Fox's parent company) donated $1 million to the GOP governors war chest.

This democracy is now closed.
Fixed that.

As disturbing as this donation is, at least it came to light and we know about it. What is more frightening is that according to new rules put in place by the SCOTUS decision, backed up by decisions of a federal appeals court and the FEC, and the failure of Congress to pass a campaign donation disclosure rule (naturally blocked by Republicans) corporations can now give unlimited amounts of money in secret by funneling donations through other organizations, effectively controlling campaign media buys, in essence buying elections.
"In the first 17 days of August — not normally a time of major campaign activity — independent groups spent $2.4 million to promote or attack candidates in the midterm elections. The spenders included unions and well-established advocacy organizations. But the numbers of smaller independent groups are growing. It's a result of rulings by the Supreme Court, a federal appeals court and the Federal Election Commission — rulings that, taken together, allow corporations to funnel money into electoral politics while remaining anonymous.

Helping to drive that surge is the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision — the invitation for corporations to take sides in elections. After that, two lesser-known decisions opened the door wider. A federal appeals court said people can give as much as they want to groups that advertise for or against a candidate. The so-called "independent expenditure committees" just can't coordinate with the candidate or party. And finally, the Federal Election Commission rolled those two rulings together and came up with this: These independent expenditure committees can take unlimited contributions from individuals, unions and corporations. And because of a loophole in the FEC rules, they don't have to report it.

"Unless the donor is giving for that specific ad, the donor will not have to be disclosed," says Larry Noble, a campaign finance lawyer in Washington who formerly served as general counsel to the FEC. "So, effectively, these corporations that don't want to be seen as supporting candidates can now give the same money they would've spent on their own to another organization, to spend that money." -- Peter Overby NPR

And if you think governor's races aren't that big a deal, consider that prior to Obama four of the past five US presidents were former governors, the one exception being Pappy Bush, Reagan's heir. Not to mention that state houses are the breeding ground for all kind of national politics and policies. 37 governorships are up for grabs this year, which I believe is a record. Disgusting as it is, Rupert Murdoch knows exactly what he's doing.

The floodgates are open.

We are so fucked.

More evidence that Fox isn't a news outlet but in fact a propaganda outlet for the right wing politics espoused by Rupert Murdoch, as if it were needed.

I'm genuinely mystified why anyone watches it as a news network in fact, I mean if you want to be propagandised fine, work away if that's your thing, but considering the huge array of reliable and genuinely balanced news sources which exist these days Fox seems completely absurd, and the pantomime and pretence about it should stop.

In some twisted way, it explains why they obsess so much about their television ratings. What better way to ensure that they stay on top with their viewership by giving them exactly what they want instead of what they need... a bunch of carefully spun counter-information that only nurtures their inner superstitions, resentments and fears so they can feel as if they're not alone in this world for harboring such negative beliefs? Like P-Diddy, they're never going to stop. In fact, it's going to get worse the more we talk about them. It's getting so bad now that some politicians actually run away from media outlets now and only talk to Faux. In some ways they have willingly quarantined themselves and the majority of their viewership from the rest of the news media. They don't care about the other side and only want to exist in a bubble of right-wing noise.

All the rest of the "other networks" need to do is get one or two Conservative pundits or newscasters that actually know what the heck they're talking about and doesn't feed into the hateful, divisive rhetoric like Joe Scarborough. That way independents can see a network trying to provide two sides of the same issues. The more this happens, the less any real person would ever have to tune into Faux News for anything.

Finally, Fox News admits it is NOT fair and balanced:
Fox News Rejects Media Matters Ad Highlighting Its $1 Million GOP Donation, Admits News Corp Opposes 'Democratic Candidates'

....The group attempted to make the ad as straightforward as possible, to make it harder for Fox to reject it. View the original ad here. Fox News, however, took issue with some of the copy of the ad. Here are the changes the network requested, as outlined in an e-mail from the media buyer to Media Matters:
1) The ad begins with "a message from Fox News". Clearly the message is from Media Matters, not Fox News Channel. So if you change the voiceover say... A message from Media Matters and not Fox News Channel that would fix the problem.
2) Later in the spot you say... "to opposed Democratic Governors". They want to clarify that statement to say... Democratic candidates, not Democratic Governors, because it's factually incorrect. Not all Democratic Governors are up for election.
Rabin-Havt told the Huffington Post that they refused to change the message to be from Media Matters, since it's a message in the words of a News Corp. executive. So as a compromise, the group changed it to, "And now, a special message that Fox News' primetime hosts refuse to tell you, brought to you by Media Matters," which is technically correct, since no primetime hosts have mentioned the donation. Media Matters did make the change, noting it was interesting that Fox News is now on record saying News Corp. opposes "Democratic candidates....."

Personally I think FOX is Unfair and Unbalanced, as I feel the same way for MSNBC. One\'s biased for the right, the other for the left.

Sorry... MSNCB isn't nearly as biased.
They have a high profile conservative morning show with Joe Scarborough as well as feature Republican Pundits & strategists on a regular basis. Their night time shows have more of a liberal slant, but at least they make it a point to try and provide a few people with a sensible voice for the other side. Faux doesn't come anywhere close to what MSNBC does. On top of this, their financial backers have openly admitted that they fund the GOP and are against Democrats. They are no longer a viable news organization in my eyes. But I'll still watch Rachel Maddow, Dylan Ratigan and Ed Schultz.

If we ran a fact check on both networks, Faux pundits would lose tremendously. PolitiFact | Sorting out the truth in politics

When MSNBC gives a million fucking dollars to the Democrats AND use it's broadcast to help organize a political party only THEN can we entertain the notion the two are equal. It is unprecedented in my lifetime that a 'news organization' would actively get behind a 'grass roots movement' and use it's ability to reach millions of people to promote a political party and rallies. Un-fucking believable.

The problem isn't the people who know the difference between facts and propaganda. The people who know that Fox News is the propaganda arm of the Far Right isn't the problem...the problem is that so many people don't know they're being manipulated and lied to.

As John Stewart said.....

The brilliance of Fox is they've delegitimized the idea of editorial authority while exercising incredible editorial authority.

And they've also got the game that 'they're all out to get us' so any criticism of us is persecution because 'they're all out to get us'.

Welcome to the last 30 years of "mainstream" and "public" media of NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, NPR... the more you call a spade a spade.. the more we realize the bias of the last 3 decades.

Payback is a bitch... ratings rule.

No...regardless of how you would like to spin it, ratings are actually a reflection of the of the overall, general state of the viewers. It's a sad reflection.

Fox has the television audience. MSNCB and other news sources trounce them with online & web audiences. It tells a lot about the groups of people that primarily use which sources for their news... but don't tell that to some the "beloved" hard Conservatives on the board who still think having a lead on radio & television in 2010 has the same impact as it did back in the 1960s.

I knew as soon as I say this topic it would not start out fair and balanced. I was right.

I watch Fox News and don't care what news channel anyone else watchs. But I don't think it's right for someone else who does not agree with something that was broadcast to imply something negative about me simply because of my news choice. I am not stupid. I understand English. I can follow-up on any story I want simply by using the internet. I don't need your protection from their "lies."

Seriously.

Fox News watchers are just that. News watchers. It doesn't make me a better or worse person. I don't think you are a better person in anyway just because you choose to watch something else.

I do wonder why or even how someone could talk trash about a show they if they don't watch it?

I've been watching MSNBC and CNN recently to see what all the fuss is by Fox News haters. I honestly find that they are all the same if only in opposition. I saw the beginning of a show somewhere last night by "Rachel" someone (I think her name was Rachel), and it was impossible to even watch her speak without cringing. Really ugly reporting style. Not for me, but if you dig it, have at it. I am not going to pick you apart for it. Who f'ing cares?

Democrats and Republicans all play the same games. Until people can get over their party affiliations, blame gaming, and develop the ability to leave their ego at the door, our country is going to be continued to be further divided and dragged down. We should all just speak for ourselves. Not a "party."
