There are times that even I cannot overlook FOX. Having been born and raised in Southern California imagine my dismay when stuck listening to the FOX News Channel this evening in a restaurant in New Mexico I see and hear a FOX commentator talking about the huge fire burning brush and structures 50 miles West of Los Angeles.

I guess nobody over there ever verifies anything because this would mean a brushfire in the Pacific Ocean. Catalina Island is directly West of Los Angeles and the distance of that is only 26 miles. The Channel Islands would NOT be directly West they would be Northwest and are off the coast of Santa Barbara.

The only fire I could find of a similar description was in Riverside County which is about 50 miles East of Los Angeles more or less depending on what part. They sat there so certain of themselves and nobody ever checked a map.

If they can't get that one right it would tend to lend credence to the concept that just maybe they don't care too much about the accuracy of their reporting. I hope that they have this corrected by now because there are going to be a great number of very puzzled people in Riverside County wondering why FOX is not reporting the losses of their homes and a great number of people on the West side of Catalina Island looking for the burning brush in the middle of the ocean.

dude. people accidentally say the wrong stuff all the time. they obviously meant to say east. just go to youtube and type in stupid quotes or something. Obama said that he had visited 58 states with just Alaska and Hawaii to go during his 2008 campaign. Bush used to say the "internets" and countless other stuff. It happens on every news network.

Might want to check your map or learn your directions. Catalina is basically south of LA. There's plenty of driving west of LA too.

West of What part of Los Angeles?

Malibu is west of Los Angeles... and the coast of Malibu runs East-West... all the way to Point Mugu. ( i.e. Malibu Beach faces due south )

The fire you speak of is actually North of Pt Mugu... Spreading south toward Pacific Coast hwy... right where the Santa Monica Mountains flatten into the plains of Oxnard.

So, yeah, in this case FOX was right, the fire IS 50 miles west of LA.

Also, the Coast of California actually runs diagonally in a North West direction overall.

San Francisco is way north, but also even farther west than LA.

And in fact, Yosemite Valley, Also further north.... is actually still farther WEST than LA.

The words uttered on FOX were West, and when one states Los Angeles without any clarification as to what part of Los Angeles in virtually every use of the English Language the meaning is by the lack of clarifications assumed to be directly or due West.

I do have a great deal of mapping experience and though my original laugh at the time did not include exact computations as to the location of the very wet fire I did those computations a few minutes ago.

Using directly West the fire is placed closest to Dume Canyon on the South with Hueneme Canyon on the North. These are both underwater canyons. According to their exact words and placement this fire is still off shore.

Their lack of clarity could have in fact been taken to mean nearly anything by anyone simply because they did not state.

It appears that there is at present more than one fire going in Southern California. I have heard of fires also near Riverside, California and a an additional one in San Bernardino County near Banning.

I also would have classified this as a slip of the tongue except while I was waiting for food which took an unusually long time this particular news organization scrolled this across the bottom of the screen and repeated it endlessly for over an hour.

Virtually every News organization makes errors from time to time.

I remember a horrific fire season years ago when I was living in the Temecula area.

The real entertainment at that time was:

Fred Phelps blamed it on the concept that California had not executed gay people.
Pat Robertson mentioned it and declared the fires the result of the election of "Liberals".
Jerry Falwell, guesting on the 700 Club blamed it on Southern California Pornography.
Jimmy Swaggart blamed it on anything that was convenient.

TBN should be interesting quite soon if the fire season is a bad one.

I lived in more rural areas of Southern California near Temecula, CA. through times like this and the reason I did well was because I kept brush cleared on my property. Guys if any of you live on more rural land or acreage please clear your brush, I have a minumum of 100 feet cleared around my ranch home in anticipation of range fires. It doesn't take much. This may have started over some directional comedy based on lack of clarity at FOX, but fires are serious and it does not take much to do a great deal of damage.

Seeing that someone at FOX may have accidently said the word west instead of east I just sent an email to them to request that gps coordinates be used instead of estimates such as 50 miles east of X. This should clear up any confusions. For example Los Angeles Harbor will now be referred to as N 33° 42.50' W 118° 15.10'. Good luck with that everyone!

Did Ann Coulter come on and start ranting about liberals? Seems like every time I'm channel surfing and pass by Fox, there she is all shrill-shrill-shrill

That’s it in a nutshell.

Foxy to its audience is news but when called out by others they flip and say they are 'entertainment'.
