I am done here, because I know too many people do not respect the constitution, and many europeans are already used to laws that make opinions illegal.... like holocaust denial laws and such.

Not all of them support those laws. I also feel that free speech should not be constrained, but also that it should not be free of consequence should it be proven such speech directly led to physical harm or other criminality.

In other words, one should be free to say what one wants, but one must also accept such a freedom may come at a price, even to the speaker. It's called responsibility, and too many seem want the former without acknowledging the latter, in Europe, US and elsewhere.

I might feel differently.

I felt like killing people before, doesn't mean I think it should be legal, or endorsed. Are you telling me, that the families should be able to murder the phelps family because their feelings were hurt?

Its the same thing. the law is the law, and the constitution says we have a right to free speech.

In the end, those who are cheering this move are cheering their own silencing.

I am done here, because I know too many people do not respect the constitution, and many europeans are already used to laws that make opinions illegal.... like holocaust denial laws and such.

I agree with you on the first amendment, but it becomes blurred when you take human rights into account. Which outweighs which? It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation.

I also find it comically ironic that they are doing this hate filled attack at funerals of the very men who are standing up for the freedom that affords them the luxury to condemn the battle dead.

That's the Old Testament's wrathful God. Not the Christian New Testament's God. Christians using the Old Testamant as a premise for hateful behavior need to find Jesus. :biggrin1:

That is the same "wrathful God" of both Testaments. Referred to as the God of Abraham, to whom even Jesus prayed according to scripture.

That's why we have an enduring constitution full of those high minded ideals you find so unpractical: To make it more difficult for the politicians of the day to subvert basic civil rights.

This is indeed the nub of the question Speedo. Constitutions et al are worth shit without basic trust and accountability.

Opinions aren't illegal New End, we haven't quite got to thought crime yet.

Yes.

I believe in america, and the first amendment as the most important amendment.

I believe if a woman wanted to insist that birth control should be legal, she should be allowed to without being sued or jailed for her thoughts.

I beleive if gay men wanted to march down the streets of San Fransisco, they should be allowed to, despite the fact that it upset the right wing Christians who were convinced it was going to turn their sons gay.

All speech should be protected, even the ugly speech.

So why didn't Phelps & Co protest Jerry Falwell's funeral ?
You agree with ugly hate speech such as racism, homophobia, misogony, etc ?
You are what made America great !
Thank God, I live in the UK ...

The Rev and his group are I believe banned in Michigan, that along with a great group of people on motorcycles kept that nasty group away from our nephews services. There is nothing more sickening than these people protesting at a soldiers services!
