As many of you know, I grew up on a reservation. We've had something similar to raves since the mid-40s. It's called a 49. (The name goes back to a story about World War II.)

Here's the basic differences:

At a 49, you find out where it's going to be at the powwow that day. At a rave, you buy a map, which leads to another place to buy a map, which leads to another . . .
At a 49, there's typically live music, mostly percussionists. (Flutes and Spanish guitars are popular accompaniment.) At a rave, who knew you could dance to ones and zeroes?
At a 49, there's a lot of booze. At a rave, ecstasy is the preferred means of killing your brain cells.
After a 49, you wake up, unable to remember the night before, with dozens of your tanhansi na hankasi in the same house raiding the fridge, assuming the house in question even has electricity. At a rave, you don't call them cousins.

I guess this makes us OGs. The differences, of course, are a matter of time: The 49 makes VH-1 look up-to-date; the rave is like The Fifth Element.

..it's not a Sci-Fi movie....
I think that all kinds of music are beautiful in their own way... Psychedelic Trance music is the sort of trance that strangely anough exists for thousands of years - the (western)world is strongely evolving the rational and material side, the other site, the unexplainable and the irrational has always been here. Psychedelic trance is a part of that and so all parties based on Trance connects you to your higher self, it holds your body so your mind can be free. The most pure, naughty, exciting, enticing, all embracing thing existing on this planet.
All the ravers and trance goers who go for the love of the dance, and the meeting of friends unite on a certain level, and it changes you forever once you experience it. You cannot tell someone who has not been, you can only experience it
Although there are simply no words in the human vocabulary that can describe such sensation, all I can say is that it has changed my life.

Ok, my rant again.

Sexuality is not a black and white matter. I've plenty of straight buds that visited the gay experience. A couple moved into being sexually open, a couple remained where they were and a few were thankful because it answered whatever questions about themselves they had.

The most important thing to me was, I got to share something pretty intense and deep with another guy. I agree to some degree that most guys may be curious. Circumstance plays a big part in that.

Heck, down in Brazil, the guys are so secure in themselves, doing something with another guy never seemed to bother any of the guys I'd met from there.

Rolls back around to societal pressures, I think.

In much of Latin America, being gay is defined as being the receptive partner. In Mexico, even kids know the difference between a puto and a mayate.

There is no such thing as straight or gay. It's all a big conspiracy pushed on society by religious, economic and political institutions.

I agree with this, a lot is very much imposed by society, and it leads to all sorts of repressions, but also structures our lives i a way that is productive.

So, TBH, I'd rather be in a structured, definded society than a "Peace and Free Love!" One.

Well, the idea of "men xor women" goes back to discredited 19th-century psychology. (Is there any other type of 19th-century psychology?)

Well, I've been living in Brazil almost my whole life and I think guys here are A LOT more uptight when dealing with nudity, showering and changing together, then in the US.
When I went to school in the US, talking about penis size, changing and showering together were no big deal. In Brazil if you ever talk about penises to your buddies they're prob going to say you're gay and leave you out.

Interesting topic. Great information from everyone.

First of all, I really believe that when males are in their teens and for some even in their twenties there is plenty of opportunity to experiment. Does experimentation make one gay or straight? I say a resounding: NO!!!

I have learned a lot in my long life. I also think that if everyone was honest, they would have to admit interest in the same sex as they are. For most, this is a passing fancy.

The teen years are interesting times for everyone, male and female alike.

Hung...Totally agree w/you...It is funny that now I really notice that my friends who are straight and just guys I meet are really comfortable w/their sexuality and even can even hang out in a "gay" club and not flip out...I know here where I live - the lines are kind of blurred when it comes to gay or straight...I mean most of the time when you meet someone - a guy or a girl - it is pretty common if they ask you if you are gay or straight...That use to really bother me at first - now I just jokingly say - which answer is going to get me laid...
