It's just so annoying, it's EARLY SEPTEMBER and I already hear people talking about seasonal holiday crap.

Yeah, it's always Halloween in my house, but I don't start blabbering about it to acquaintances months before the fuckin day.

Just... Ugh.

I'm thankful that Rem's mom doesn't make a big fuss over holidays. Plus she works as a really convenient excuse to avoid my holiday crazed family. I do enjoy spending time with her, don't get me wrong, but it's a perk that I can say we're busy spending time with her.

I hear you. I've not heard much about it here so far, but it'll start next month. I'll just do what I usually do, buy all my presents in the airport departure lounge (or train station if I don't fly). The only parts that I genuinely look forward are drinking whisky in front of the fire and the street food available at the christmas markets.

Not today, Santa.

For me Christmas starts in October when I receive my first card (yes, October!). I have a friend overseas who posts early because she selects sea/surface mail - but it ends up coming by airmail anyway so it arrives first week of October.

I do enjoy the holiday itself, but all the hoo-ha around it gets quite tedious. All the advertising and constant TV talking about it usually starts in November, it just builds and builds and creates a lot of expectation. By the time Dec 25 finally arrives, it's a bit of a letdown...2 months of endless yabber yabber yabber, just for 5 minutes of unwrapping presents that I had to wrap myself anyway. It's all over by 9:30 am.

Bah humbug!

New Year is fun, although I always cringe when I see next year's calendars ready to buy in the middle of this year.

But Hallowe'en I could do without - in Australia it just wasn't done when I was an unmentionable age, so I'm very cynical about it. Over the past 10 years or so, 'trick or treating' has been marketed to our unmentionables (and their parents) who see unmentionables from other countries doing it and feel left out. It's just a gimmick for retailers to flog 'spooky' themed products that they wouldn't normally be able to shift.

I’m a short term optimist and long term pessimist. It’s all going to hell in a hand basket, so why not enjoy it while we can.

Halloween and Valentine’s Day means cheap chocolate the day after. Yippee! I happen to love my family and only get to see them on Christmas and Easter. Plus I love to cook and spoil them rotten, and I love the time off from work. I don’t have to buy into anything else people are selling.

I have every reason to hate Christmas. I lost my dad at Christmas. I have a lot of reasons to hate holidays. I have some pretty bad memories and I miss some pretty important people. The first ones after the loss is the toughest. At this point in my life, I guess I choose to celebrate the few holidays I have left. I almost didn’t have any left with the people I love.

But I sure the hell am not going to begrudge any grinches out there. Grief is grief. Loss is loss. We all see things our own way. Spends your days exactly the the way you choose. No regrets.

Driving back from the beach this morning I stopped in my regular WalMart to pick up a few things.

They had shelves after shelves of Christmas ornaments. And wreaths. And fake trees. And all the other Christmas accouterments.

I've been seeing the Halloween decorations for a few weeks now. But I don't recall yet seeing any Thanksgiving decorations yet. Or maybe because the colors for both Holidays are similar I've not really noticed they have both.

But today, it really did catch me by surprise to see so much Christmas so early. Or do they stock the shelves this early every year and I've just not noticed it before?

I see Halloween displays popping up in the stores that I go to, while I am not a fan of it, I do get a kick out of it..kid at heart still.
For years I haven't cared much about the whole Holiday Season, being single and no family of my own or a good friend who I can call up and chill with. I usually spend my days relaxing or walking around in the trails at the park. I dreamed of days where our family could have one big celebration, because we have lost key members of our family, Not happening.. Many of them have dinners and be at home with little fanfare and well, Me..I am doing nothing.
Now that I am seeing or dating someone---depending on how you look at it. I am feeling awesome about the holiday season. He wants to see me and spend time together and meet his sister...mom and dad are no longer with them. I am so happy to be invited.

All the holiday seasons are blending into one, in my opinion - at least commercially. New daft "traditions" seem to be invented year on year.

Having said that, I accidentally came across what I thought was a surprisingly profound quote today...

"The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things... The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant."

Some of us go through tremendous hardships, and we all need more good things in our ledgers. It can be hard to come across them, so I'm definitely on for taking any easy wins to add to that pile.

Other people can celebrate as they like (since that may not have been clear in my original post), I just find myself less and less into it as the years go on. The only bits I have interest in are the food and a tiny part of seeing my family. I do try to have some sort of relationship with them, even with nothing in common with 'em. I like holiday foods. Extra time and care with food I don't get to eat often.

I do wish decorations, music, and retail shit kept holiday stuff to the month of the holiday. I'm sure the employees would generally prefer it too. Fuck hearing Christmas music for near two months. Especially when it's usually only a short track list that repeats.

I may want to hermit, but if others wanna rock the eggnog, cider, whatever, rock on. I'm content to chill at home with my sweetie.

I don't mind Christmas music, but yeah...2 months of it is headfucking.

I love watching the 2 big Carols charity concerts on TV.

I have quite a few Christmas CDs - I don't actively 'collect' them but if an artist/band I like releases one, I'll buy it. Some I genuinely enjoy, some I just have out of loyalty to the artist. Here are a few faves...

Just kidding, lol. It's only September for fuck's sake.

I dig them out December 1. That might seem a bit early but I have a lot to get through and 2-3 a day is enough. More than that is a bit much, especially as they all cover pretty much the same songs. As soon as Boxing Day arrives, they're packed up and put away until next December.

Dec 1 for me, too. Tree goes up. Music though? The day of and only on that day! There are some great tunes, and I have a great collection, but I’m just not interested in hearing them except on the actual day in question.
