My homepage on the internet is Yahoo! (probably because of YIM, I suppose, and my own laziness about hunting out something more interesting). Those of you who have the same Yahoo! homepage know that it starts with a micropage/pop-up that lists current headlines, the weather and a couple of ads. It's no big deal, really. I open up Firefox and move about my way unperturbed by needing to click away from such a pedestrian, ordinary portal.

I turned my 'puter back on after a brief outing involving meeting some pals for Happy Hour (45 minutes, actually ) and I discover that Match (dot) com has decided to show me who's "available for chat" in an ad; again, that's fine, except that they're all men.

It's not like I've thought closets are for more than clothing storage for 34+ years, but I gotta say that this put me back somewhat. Which cookies are collected by whom, and what happens with this info? And, again: I don't have any pretense to anything like internet "privacy", but finding such blatant profiling just...well...puts my joint outta shape.

And before anyone else goes there: "But ch'ahh, Blanche"

I use yahoo as well, never had that problem. But I always use CCleaner after any internet use. Here's the download link if you want try it. (CCleaner is the number-one tool for cleaning your Windows PC. It protects your privacy online and makes your computer faster and more secure.)

It's also a breath mint.

Bbucko: I still maintain a pseudo Yahoo account for directing all SPAM that I cannot otherwise get rid of. But Yahoo quit being "our friend" a long time ago. Just wait until you discover they sold AARP medical information, such as how many anal polyps you're likely to have and how many bumps you have on your head.

I've used CCleaner, NoScript and FlashBlock for years now; I think that's one of the reasons why I'm still cruisin' with a machine I bought in 2003 :biggrin1:

There are obviously some cookies collected despite all the precautions. As I said in the OP, it's not so much a big deal as it's just unnerving. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Yeah, same here: I don't think that I can even remember the passcode to it. Since I don't IM anymore, my list of YIM "buddies" is pretty dusty.

I've also burned through one GMail account, though my current one seems safe from spam. With my myriad health issues, they'd have a field day with me, though for the time being I haven't noticed any intrusions in that regard.

Thanks for the replies (and compliments, Ryan and Nudie).

Quit watching gay porn! Tube sites are popular (pornhub, etc.), but don't forget how insecure flash is, and what kind of data it can collect.

As for spam, one thing you can do to drastically reduce spam (at least on a new account, ones with tons of spam already are pretty much toast), is on any website you give your email address to to register, never have it displayed publicly, such as this forum etc. Little programs called spiders crawl across the interwebs picking up info like phone numbers and emails just to sell to/use for spamming purposes. Also avoid signing up to shady sites, if you must sign up just set up a junk account. Shady sites will probably just sell it even though they probably have a ToS that says otherwise.

Good point I didn't know about spider thing. I never use my actual email account for signing up to any site I have one with alias I use just for that purpose.

I rarely watch streaming porn anymore, as I get too bored with the endless beginnings and loading them on my slow-ish connection can take forever; they also don't always respond well when you try to skip forward or replay specific parts. I've also noticed that porn-streaming sites load much, much more slowly than YouTube, for instance.

The other thing is that, really, almost all the streaming porn that I watch is straight (or at least involves a woman): I just like it better.

My education in bots and spiders started about six years ago. I am really vigilant about posting anything about me anywhere except for e-mails and PMs, though I should watch the PMs, which are open to potential bots and such.

Most of the time the Yahoo! greeting window features an ad for the Nissan Leaf (as it's doing right now), which is kinda odd, too, as I live car-free.
