In the upcoming presidential debates, you'll see McCain talk about how the Republicans just want to save the Americans money and how the Democrats want to spend, spend spend.

I believe that McCain may actually be serious about reducing federal spending. But I do think that after the last 8 years the Republicans have lost any reasonable or serious claim to the titles of "fiscally responsible" or "small government people."

Obama will be able to counter by talking about how much money the country will save ending the occupation of Iraq.

A poll of historians recently put Dubya close to the bottom of the list of American presidents.

He ends up on both lists. Top 10 best and top 10 worst. In both cases, I think it's more contemporary political statement than anything else, though personally I feel he's got a stronger case for making top 10 worst.

We are so on the road to fascism:

The population gets dumber, less connected with the world due to declining educational standards.

The leadership promotes fear among the population, a sense of pending doom if we don't surrender our freedoms for security.

The news media becomes concentrated in the hands of a few powerful groups who mimic this message realizing that people in fear are easier to manipulate.

The political parties demonize each other to the point of dehumanization. What were once mere differences in political philosophies become differences in religion, education, thought, economic class, and geography.

Economic policies of both political parties promote economic disparity, the stabilizing influence of a large middle class is lost as its numbers decrease, further creating a disparity between rich and poor.

To counter the cultural and economic threats of globalization and domestic economic policies which favor the rich, fundamentalism rises in popularity among the disenfranchised.

To keep power, the political forces begin to strip the public of its rights in the name of various sorts of security measures.

What happens after that?

Usually a civil war or the introduction of a nationalist fascism.

Remember that very few people, particularly leaders, see revolutions coming. The pop-up before anyone knows it, frequently managing to catch the despot or president or king in his own castle.

none the less I think this country is/has going/gone to hell in a hand basket... I just don't understand how so many republicans out there can look at what the current administration has done over the last 7 years and say that this country is better off.... the people of this country have essentially turned over control (through voting for the various senators, representatives, and president of course) of the US over to corporate america... the average joe no longer has a say in what goes on in this country.... I'm not a big conspiracy theorist, but to a certain extent, I think that john and jane does of this country should watch their backs, because big brother is out to screw us all!

Lets face it: most of us couldn't name ten presidents, and among those who could how many would know which one is which?
"Bush" is easy to spell too....and the Fox News Channel seems to have always treated him rather well.
Now I wish I hadn't filled my ballot with forgettable 1 term caretaker presidents from the 19th century........

If I had to pick a top 10... probably:

Lincoln, Washington, Roosevelt, Roosevelt, Reagan, Kennedy, Jefferson, Wilson, Eisenhower....... you're right, this is hard.

Probably. but I don't think voting for GWB on a poll of best presidents is the best available evidence of that.

I'm not saying that..... I am just making a general statement....since GWB was put in office (and yes I say put in office I do mean put, because as we all know, he lost the vote in both 2000 and 2004, but I digress) this country has gone from the only super power in the world to one of the bigest jokes..... I just pray that the next president will be able to repair all of the damage GW's administration has done, though I bet it will be 50 or more years for this country to recover from the reign of terror

what? oh come on. He didn't lose the electoral vote in either case and won the popular vote in '04.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, there are plenty of REAL reasons to hate Bush... pulling conspiracy nonsense out of your ass and harping on non-issues just makes you look foolish. Stick to valid criticisms and your arguments will have more credibility.

Truman, not on your list, always makes my top10. Reagan will be on the list for a long time based solely on leadership and the end of the Cold War. I agree with this despite my politics to the contrary. He was a great American. Bush the 2nd has been a disaster. The true Reaganites hate him because of his overspending, illogical and virtually illegal entry into Iraq, and his incompetence. I believe these eight years will go down as some of the worst in our history. On 9/12/01 he had a chance to mobilize the entire country and, probably, the entire world and then let Cheney and Rumsfeld and the neocons allow his to shit all over himself. That's what happens when you elect an incompetent and stupid man to the most important and difficult on earth. Just look at what's going on in Afghanistan right now. The level of violence is higher than at any time since we drove the Taliban out. Instead of going more forcefully there or dealing with Pakistan and Syria, we created a terrorism playground where there once hadn't been one. That's a poor use of finite resources. The effective use of any national resource - natural, financial, military, intellectual, it doesn't matter, falls first to our president. This guy's a pant load. I can't wait for January 21, 2009. Free at last, free at last, thank God almighty, we'll be free at last!
