Protein. And calories. Calories that your body can absorbe. Along with serious-enough resistance training where you're actually tearing down your muscle tissue. That's when the protein is needed--to rebuild the muscles bigger.

To gain muscle size, you need three things:
1- intense resistance training.
2- enough food to recover and build.
3- sleep/recovery time.
Almost invariably, if someone is having difficulty adding weight, it's because they aren't eating enough. And you have to be consistent.
I have to eat over 6,000 calories a day to gain. Every 3 hours, I'm eating, whether I'm hungry or not.
It can get to be a pain.... Especially when you're doing a good job of eating worthwhile food & not garbage regularly. Lol

Thank for info at the moment I am eating 3000 Cals nine meals a day but the gut has loads of trouble with food due to the illness so most is 6 meals liquid and the other is food.
My muscles soreness is another problems,
I don't think my gut can take 6000 due to having most of my gut removed.
Will try to added some more Calstock.

You probably need to start with asking your physician on what will work dietary-wise.

How do I gain size when I am eating great resting and training, any tips as I have SBS and Crohns and do not make iron so bloods are lower. Anything tip wise would be great. M

Hey Man. I also have Crohns so I can relate to your dilemma. I've put on decent size but like you my digestion system is very sensitive to a lot of protein powders. I learned the hard way with expensive proteins that were supposed to have very little lactose which they would still leave me bloated and having abdominal pain so I've gone to a vegan protein which isn't as good but it's something. I try to get my protein from natural foods as much as possible but nothing beats the convenience of being able to have a protein shake after a workout. Make sure you are taking a multivitamin and if your iron is low you want to take that as well which iron tablets alone cause some stomach pains but is necessary for general health so take your iron with vitamin c. The vitamin c does something for absorption so that your body gets most of the iron. Here's something I learned as I've gotten a little older as someone living with Crohns. Micronutrients are very important to overall health and although they may not contribute much to muscle growth you will learn that Crohns is an illness that robs you of nutrients you will get from foods as it is not being properly digested so if you can take vitamins then it will play a part in your overall health and how your body will eventually digest the macronutrients needed to put on muscle mass. If you can cut dairy that has lactose out of your diet then your body will thank you. Limit the caffeine and alcohol consumption as those are also things that can contribute to malabsorption.

Cheers Hou,
It's nice to know how hard work it is, you will pleased to know that I don't drink alcohol and only have one coffee a day and one green tea, I also have ACV with a fresh squeeze lemon and lime, as for mult-vits
I have 2 a day all round, I cannot take iron tablets sorry to say but need iron infusion on a regular 2 months, plus for the Crohns
I have a infusion every 8 week plus some very strong tablet to kill the immune system so we can shut it down as it not in a very good state, and I have about 200grams of protein over 8 to 9 meals plus 250 to 300 grams of Carbs and have to what the fats due to kidney problems so I keep it about 80grams most is from my special hospital drinks.
And thanks for the write will look at some stuff you sent and see if there anything I can work with but cheers for taking your time to write up much appreciated. M

Adding creatine monohydrate to your post-workout protein shake can add size (but part of this is water retention). I was a skinny guy when I first stared using creatine, and I added almost 20 lbs over the course of 4 months (eating 5-6 small meals a day and lifting heavy helped contribute to the weight gain). You have to drink lots of water, as it can be hard on your kidneys.
All the best!

The hardest part for me is eating enough food. I need somewhere around 4000 calories/day to gain muscle. It can be a slog somedays.

I've increase up to 3500 Cals but have to cut some water out as the belly cannot take to much let see over the next few weeks I can increase some size.
With the crohns getting worst, I also most of my gut removed and this week training has not been good due to tiredness and bad muscle soreness and more weight loss.
It's just such hard work but will keep pushing myself thanks for the support. M
