No one is saying that all lives don't matter. What they are saying is that for 400 years in our history black people have been treated as if their lives did not matter. You could kill a black person and face no consequences. That was true under slavery, with lynchings in the Jim Crow South and across the country now with the police killing of numerous unarmed black people innocent of any crime.

Literally nobody here has said that All Lives DONT Matter and yet you decide to say "BTW all lives matter, not only black." So again, you are either ignorant or racist/acting in bad faith. Of course all lives matter. The problem is that black lives don’t seem to matter to the police departments and the social justice system in the USA. People of color get brutalized by police officers in a higher scale than white people, even when there’s no real reason to and the aggressors face little to no consequences when they kill innocent black people. On the other hand, white people that do bad stuff like breaking quarantine to go protest because they want to go eat a hamburger and show up with riffles and hand guns get a free pass. That’s why the protest is called Black Lives Matter, to remember the US government that they have to protect people of color too.

I don’t think you can grow from not being a racist to a racist. He probably has always been like this.

Nobody is born a racist, so everyone who has racist thoughts has grown into that during their life. So yes, you can grow in into being a racist. It all comes down to the morals and values of the people you grow up with and asociate yourself with. In a way just like people with religious parents are more likely to be religious than people with non-religious parents. It's simply the scene you get exposed to and are familiar with.

That doesn't mean there aren't exceptions, and that also doesn't mean you can't change your view afterwards. it's just very hard to get through them, because racism nests really deep into what someone stands for and believes in. Tha's why we need to speak up now that Black Lives Matter. So that everybody who either disagrees or is indifferent about the topic learns by facts that he/she might be wrong. That's the only right way to get through to people. Sadly many people think violence, anger, confrontation and mocking is the way to go, and thats why things are clashing so hard right now.

If you want to change opinions, don't try to make people think you are right. Make them aware why there are wrong. Change starts within themselves. Not the other way around.

Racism against black people isn't just an American issue, there are plenty cases of racist-driven attacks on the black population in Russia.

I've been a member here for a while, haven't posted until today, but I do want to say that I understand where you're coming from. I live in Scotland and though there is certainly racism here, when I first heard "Black Lives Matter" it seemed bizarre to me that anyone thought it necessary to use those words in combination. Unfortunately, I have learned from my friends and family in the US that the message is an important one. Why "Black Lives Matter" rather than "All Lives Matter"? The answer is that most people in the US do not need to be reminded that white lives matter, while too many people, and police officers, fail to understand that a black life is every bit as valuable as a white life.

You don't get it because, like me, you haven't experienced the deeply engrained culture of racism in the US. For me, the idea that anyone might think, on a conscious or subconscious level, that one person's life is worth more or less than another because of the colour of their skin is incomprehensible, but this is a reality that black people and their allies from other ethnic groups are battling to overcome. To quote my aunt, a lifelong US citizen, "that all men are created equal is one aspect of the American dream that has yet to be realised".

As for Gavin, I wish that all racists were more like him - it would make them easier to identify and avoid. I'm heartened that he is one of only two people I followed on social media who I've had to unfollow because of their racist posts over the past couple of days.
