Well allow me to retort... when was the last time you heard someone say that a particular statement was gay (ie this topic is gay) and it meant that this topic likes other topics?... stop while youre ahead.. you know the context.

No, allow me to be blunt.

In 2008, the word gay no longer has its age old innocent context of something bright and happy; this isn't the 50's, it has evolved to having direct reference to homosexuality.

To term something flippantly as 'gay' is to use it in it's current derogatory form. To use you analogy, this is a gay topic, refers to a topic discussing homosexuality, fair enough. This is a fucking gay topic, moves the meaning into it derogatory form of 'gay' i.e. homosexuality is bad, wrong, perverse.

Words change. The word nigger is derived from Latin to mean black, or black person but was corrupted into a deeply faul and offence derogatory slavers term, with years and years of violent blood soaked history. In 2008, one dose not use the word nigger to describe something black or someone black, it is vile, just as using the term gay has become.

Are you saying the word gay is fine until homosexuals have endured as many years of burtal history as black folks?

Ignorance of the language or the willingness to use either word in its far past historical sense is no longer acceptable today.

Now in the words of Brian of Nazareth... FUCK OFF!

Im sorry I guess there are some morons who dont know when its being using in a non inflammatory context and just assumes everyone is a homophobe and out to get them... grow up.

You must have missed my very first statement that said it does not offend me. I still think it reflects poorly and immaturely on those who continually use it, just as I do with people who have to cuss every other sentence, etc. I can say nigger in a noninflammatory comment too. Doesn't it say something about people who use words like that incessantly? IMO, the only reason it's necessary is because those who use them don't have the intelligence or maturity to express themselves otherwise.

"thats gay" meaning "thats crumby" "or "that is a bad thing"

I have never thought that the derogatory use of the word gay meant "crumby" (or do you mean crummy?), or "that is a bad thing". I always thought it meant effeminately homosexual.

Rugbypup, your response to estebanhung is rude and OTC. You WAY overreacted.

Your miss understanding of the diverse derogatory uses of the word gay not withstanding, my response to Estebanhung was proportional to the highly insensitive terminology and phasing he used.

Having said that, i have no intentions to bite unnecessarily so if I’ve offended or upset Estebanhung, i apologies and would ask him not to refer to gay people as alien objects.

Well for those of you still interested in discussing this topic in a mature way, i found this cool article about the " word gay" if you scroll down to " pejorative non sexualized usage" youll maybe begin to understand where im coming from. Gay - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"especially in the late 1990s, the usage as a generic insult became common among young people"

as a fella of 20 now, in the mid 90's i was a grade schooler. It makes sense then that i learned the insult, nonsexualized version of this word(from watching "young people"(teenagers) ) before i learned the meaning as reffering to one attracted to the opposite sex. i only went through puberty beginning the year 2000.

In
creating this thread, i sought to understand how completely i could miss out on this dual nature and how some people would be offended. i think i am begining to understand now. those of you who were going through puberty in the mid 90's probably were surrounded by people slinging the word gay around as an insult and simultaneously experiencing this conflict of sexual nature all kids go through. However, i do not believe my dearth of knowledge concerning your feelings constitutes a basis for calling me low class or uneducated. It makes sense to me now how differently you all can feel about the topic, and how some people are just really wanting to vent their frustrations right now. I cant wait to see what the next generation does and how They will be different.

I’m sorry I bit you Estebanhung. I’m a good little pup really. You seemed to have innocently if not inappropriately worded your post.

I'll put my teeth way.
Thank you pup! I was just about to spank you! Now you just stay in the doghouse for five minutes and everything is ok!

BTW- " if not inappropriately worded your post" <that's a double negative

I can be a good pup, just some things rub my fur the wrong way. I don't mean to bite... hard.

BTW a double negative can resolve as a positive, it's called a Litote.

A lot of people use it these days. It's disparaging but not a big enough deal for me to bother being offended by it. But then I don't see the point in being offended by the dreaded N word so maybe I'm just too lenient on the whole thing. I care more about how people treat me than what words they use. If somebody's cool with me and uses every racial/sexual word in the book (as general words not against me or specific people) then they're still cool with me. On the other hand somebody can completely look down on you and treat you like you're sub-human but speak to you as politely as can be.

the world is way too pc. we have to watch every little thing now. I'll say "that's retarded" and it has offended some. I wasn't calling anyone retarded. Because "those people" are now referred to as mentally handicapped, how can anyone be offended by "my gov't makes some retarded decisions"?

my grandparents used the word colored, i grew up saying black, then it was african american, what next?

Gay, Shmay!!!
Why do we need to know someone sexuality anyway? we don't, but gays decided to be out and proud and in everyone's face about it. Sorry, but you are yet another minority that needs to be patient while society gets used to the idea. Blacks have been waiting 200+ years.

They aren't oriental, their asian.
not black, african american
not retarded, mentally handicapped.
not illegal aliens, residents that aren't citizens.
So much PC junk!

sweet fancy moses, let's stick to a name or lable or term, then people wont be offended. Would gays rather we never use the term gay and pretend they don't exist? no. The gay community would make great strides if they can get the 70+ year olds feel they don't have to whisper the word gay.

It's absolutely offensive.
The person using it is substituting GAY for something bad.

"That shirt is so gay"... meaning, "I hate that shirt."

Or, that is a NEGATIVE, and GAY is negative.

Very offensive.

Because, in the same case as using GAY as a negative, you are using RETARDED as a negative.

"My government makes retarded decisions"; in other words, they make STUPID decisions, or IDIOTIC decisions. You are associating
the retarded (or, more appropriately, those mentally handicapped)
with being STUPID or IDIOTIC.

extremely offensive.

Wow. This thread is so black.

What a waste of my time.

(*Note: The word 'black' could be substituted for either of the words: female, hispanic, straight, bisexual, asian, mexican, retarded, german, hick, gay, or any other word that will be offensive to at least 1 group of people)

Grr, I'm a bad person!!

so your saying we shouldn't use the word retard?
Fire retardant.
Security software retards the ability for someone to access your computer.
That guy drives like he's retarded.

Retarded was an indication of not dealing effectively with the world. sure someone can go to websters and do a cut and paste here.

My point our society is way to PC and is over run with special interests and frankly, that's retarded.

Then, if something is viewed as good, we won't allow it. God forbid someone say a prayer in school or in a gov't building.

So what if gay is used in the negative. You want to go back to the way it was when gay was the love that dare not speak it's name.

No way will the gay community ever get total acceptance, it's just not gonna happen. The flaming gays are the coloreds of yesteryear except they have better fashion sense and a bus pass :)

1) It has become common usage in the teen to twenties crowd as usage for something that is bad, or lame, or unpleasant, or stupid. The person saying it doesn't always have the intent of putting down gay people, although some people who use the term this way DO have that intent.
2) The term, regardless of intent, is always associating gay, and there is never any doubt that gay refers to homosexuality in the context, with something bad, never anything positive. This usage places the user of the term in this context in the position of being derogatory to gay people, because of the association, and accepting that negative associations with gay people is OK, regardless of the intent at the time. Some gay people in the same age group use the term the same way.
3) A word IS just a word--it is the intent behind it that counts. I am not personally offended when it is used in the context of a common term in common usage, but I am saddened that the usage has BECOME common in that association. I hoped that the generations following mine were less prejudiced against gay people than mine was, but I see we still have a long way to go. My two cents on the subject.

...so i could never learn how they truly would like to be teated. i guess its one thing to have an ideological mind set and another to have experience in the field.
<...>
i think judgeing a person on a single phrase that leaves thier lips is wrong.
The golden rule is a good place to start - treat other people (gay or not) the way you would want to be treated. Think for just a moment how you would feel if you heard someone using "latino" or "wetback" in the same way you've been using "gay."

You are right; judging someone on a single phrase is wrong. But now that you know that using "gay" to mean "lame" or "bad," maybe you shouldn't use it any more.

Pardon me for using a word in its proper context thats been around for 700 years because you are so narrow minded that you only think of the definition which most pertains to you.
Don't be a troll. I doubt that in ordinary conversation you use "gay" in its older context. When was the last time you told your friends, "I got a pay raise at work! I feel so GAY!"?
