Husband and I (ages 60 and 66) will be in Times Square area in a couple of weeks. Looking for suggestions for a gay bar. We're not interested in a dance club atmosphere, but more of a 'neighborhood bar' that's fun to hang out. Not looking to hook up, but wouldn't mind people-watching as others do. We're not necessarily looking to find a show, but wouldn't mind if something happened in our line of sight.

I know people who have gone and enjoyed it. The younger set ridicules it because of its older clientele and that the patrons actually speak to each other face to face.

I haven't been there; it might be a pick-up place. Find out.

The last time I went to this bar, on the east side, it was well known for being a bar where you hired younger men. I hesitate to call it a hustler bar as it seemed to attract a more sophisticated person for hire. It was also known for a place where patrons sang along to show tunes played on the piano. I am definitely a west side type of guy, but I ended up at a hotel on gone east side and we thus tried this bar.

The Townhouse is great, great, great. Has kind of a faux-elegant vibe, kind of aspirationally old-school gentleman's club Manhattan. Really fun, older crowd. You don't need to dress up, but it's not a shorts and T-shirts place either. Highly recommended.

The first time I went there I was 23 (this was 1994), and I think the crowd assumed I was a hustler -- but it's just that it was the closest gay bar to my aunt's place on the Upper East Side! And I was too clueless to differentiate bar styles.

They have fun showtunes and other singalong nights. I like Julius too, but I would say the Townhouse is more what you're looking for from your description.

I assume it's just a joke, because the Eagle is known for late-night exhibitionism etc. If this person is looking for singalongs and cabaret and all that, then the Townhouse. Depending on how showtune-y they want it, maybe another night at Marie's Crisis. Beware the very tight quarters in the latter though, if still thinking about covid.
