Just a quick question of all.

I often browse the webcams section of LPSG. And I'm often baffled by people who put down very strict age limits on who they will play with.

On Friday evening, I was watching someone on a cam site with the number 4 in it's name. Latin American guy. Fantastic body. Beautiful long dark hair. Well endowed with a nice shape.

Possibly the sexiest man I've ever seen camming on that site.

I scrolled down his profile. Next to 'Age' was the number.............. 48.

And I think of that in the context of all these people who post strict age limits on who they'll play with.

If you post "under 25's only" does that mean you'd rather play on cam with a fuggly (define how you will) 23 year old than a utterly stunning 32 year old..?

I don't get that. Surely you'd pick the hot one, no matter their age?

Just like with race, body type, etc. this is again a matter of generalizations based on patterns, not absolutes. One wouldn't say "no guys over X age" because there are absolutely no men over that age one finds attractive, but because at a certain point such a high % of that group one finds unattractive, that it's determined a useful strategy to dissuade said group from contact.

Just like with race, body type, etc.

...but if you posted "Nobody of X ethnicity" on here, the whole website would (quite rightly) hound that person off the site.

Why is it okay to say "nobody of X age" therefore?

I don't mind so much in that the 48 year old Latin American guy I was watching was.... *swoon* *faint* ...so if ageists want to rule themselves out of him, more of him for me!

But it's interesting that age is the one legally protected characteristic that people think it's okay to put in adverts like that. And probably make my Mr. Stunning Latin American feel so damned unpretty - and unwelcome (even though he was the sexiest guy on earth).

Both parts of that statement I disagree with. I have seem many cases of expression of racial/ethnic preference, and only heard of maybe one or two cases of someone being pressured off a site because of it. If they were, it wouldn't be rightful to harass someone for discriminating sexual preferences.

Why is it okay to say "nobody of X age" therefore?

Because... people have sexual preferences?

I don't mind so much in that the 48 year old Latin American guy I was watching was.... *swoon* *faint* ...so if ageists want to rule themselves out of him, more of him for me!

Ok, then why bother suggesting that those exercising exclusive association should be shunned?

But it's interesting that age is the one legally protected characteristic that people think it's okay to put in adverts like that.

It isn't, though. People regularly discriminate in dating on all sorts of levels that would be much more broadly viewed as bigotry if translated to the public/civic realm.

Most people practice dating discrimination on the basis of sex/gender. Many people even in the Western world still romantically discriminate on the basis of religion. It's quite common to implicitly discriminate on the basis of ability. We discriminate on the basis of various sorts of associations. We also often practice classist discrimination with dating, even often without realizing it. And, yes, it's still common to discriminate in dating on the basis of race/ethnicity.

These are all still generally socially acceptable when it comes to romantic association. And there's nothing wrong with any of it, imo. One's dating life is not analogous to civic realm. We don't have the same duty to reciprocity in our private lives that we do in public life.

And probably make my Mr. Stunning Latin American feel so damned unpretty - and unwelcome (even though he was the sexiest guy on earth).

That's on him. No one has an obligation to make other people feel pretty.

People have personal tastes, and people discriminate. Also, this isn't new. There isn't much to be said outside of that.

If I come across an online profile, and they rattle off a list of dislikes and preferences, I skip them and find someone else. You aren't going to change that person, and stamping your heels about it isn't going to change the world. Birds of a feather: they will find someone in their narrow band of acceptability, like you are also free to enjoy who you find attractive.

A question to you: do you like everyone romantically? No biases at all?

Ah, but not everyone's "hot" one will be the same.

My point, which got lost after just one reply, was the arbitrary ages have little meaning.

Anyone who says: "No Skype wanks with anyone over 30" just turned down the chance to Skype wank with Cristiano Ronaldo (34) and Justin Timberlake (38).

Anyone who says: "No Skype wanks with anyone over 40" just turned down the chance to Skype wank with Enrique Iglesias (44).

And Justin Bieber at 25 ain't got long before quite a few ads on here exclude him.

That's the point I was making. Or trying to.

It's like casting a fishing net. Sometimes the net allows the wrong things to escape, sometimes it catches the wrong thing too.

But the purpose of the net is to improve the efficiency of catching what you want. So yes, you miss out on good exceptions, but you also get rid of dozens of time wasters.

Also, it saves those people time too and those who have issues with people who make age/race/nationality/religious/weight/height rules.

While I don't have a strong opinion on this topic, I know the feeling of having your point being lost and your post being hijacked!

I've turned down guys interested in hooking up with me because I will see the age restriction in their profile. I kindly let them know that I don't qualify because I am older than their restriction. They often give me excuses and tell me that they can bend their rules. But I decline and tell them I am only looking for open-minded individuals.
