Oh dear how did I miss this gem. Since I'm in a good mood, I'll ignore the implications that gay is some sort of disease and instead joke that I'd rather be a dead-dog covered in donkey shit than be straight. Or maybe I'm serious.
Most people who are different feel so only when reminded in someway that they are different. Even with all the self-hatred in the world....
We get ostricized, ridiculed, murdered for being gay. We get shut out of the hospital rooms of dying partners by their parents who never saw us as less than damned. The exclusion of homosexuality in schools creates a host of problems for gays, as well as further perperuating the idea that we're abnormal (although same-sex partnership is common in many animals). If homosexuality was always deemed as normal as seeing a car pass by, there would be less feelings of guilt/shame/confusion.
So if someone doesn't wanna live their life being attacked and called immoral, so be it. We're not all thick-skinned heartless warriors that ride horses and slay dragons with no desire to connect to people.
And I'm sick and fucking tired of hearing this "self-loathing" shit. Self-loathing gays exist, but the term is most often thrown around for any person who has a desire for men but doesn't stuff his face with the gay culture buffet. Don't like gay parades? You're self-loathing. Don't like Chris Crocker? You're self-loathing. Don't like Olive Garden's breadsticks? You're , and fucking insane. I mean, come on. It's the OG. They're fucking delicious.
The irony is, self-loathing is often used to label people who's problems aren't with their own desires but with preconceived notions of the gay community. The INternal conflict is actually EXternal. This is NOWHERE NEAR an issue of self-loathing, more one of prejudice and misconception.
Back to the OP, here's a host of other ways to spend government funding than finding a cure for men liking other men:
Poverty, homelessness, healthcare, AIDS research, land preservation, payroll/wages . I imagine that not too long ago, an idea of a gay-cure would've received countless government dollars while teens couldn't afford college and fathers can't get to work to make $ to support their families.
It would be another case of personal agendas and religion taking the steering wheel of this country while more dire and immediate needs are tossed in the trunk.
