I hear married guys refer to their husbands, but I never hear of the supposed other role. Are they both Husbands?

Role? I didn't realize that "husband" identifies a role (that is, in a sense that it refers to a different role from whatever "other role" you have in mind ("wife"?)). I thought it pretty much just means male spouse.

In you look up the term "husband" in the dictionary. Most will define it as being the male partner in a marriage.

So it stands to reason that in a marriage where both partners identify as male, they would both be husbands and they would refer to each other as their husband.

But at the same time, a label is a label, if you don't want to wear it then you don't have to.

I know a few women that hate being referred to as wife because to them it makes out they are the property of their husband.

I have heard the following references for a same-sex spouse:
1.) Husband & Husband;
2.) Spouse;
3.) Partner - usually from older men, who are still not fully comfortable using "husband", due to the lingering effects of homophobia;
4.) Little Man;
5.) The Wife - the guy, who said this was a big, bodybuilding truck mechanic, who had a petite, stay-at-home househusband;
6.) The ball-&-chain.

7. Whatever we like.

I've seen more than anything with guys that marital status can be totally separate from title.

"Partner" makes me cringe a little. There's just something bougie-sounding about it. lol

As far as I am concerned, call yourself whatever you want. It should only matter for your and your partner/other half/ball&chain. So many people have to attach labels to everything. Feel free to refer to yourself however you want.

Ever since we got married in 2009, I have used "husband", but my husband took a few years to get comfortable with that and preferred "partner". He's now fully on board. I've noticed that no one on the phone, or in medical offices, banks, government offices even flinched when I say husband anymore.
