I can't help but notice that the gay guys here tend to be articulate and intelligent. Knowing virtually nothing as I do about "the gay world", I am curious if most gay men are amongst our more intelligent. Where are the gay trolls or meatheads? Isn't being gay a completely random spread across the male population? and therefore one might expect to see a similar cross section in attributes.

See, I hear the gay's have a special school, where they get taught to read, write and speak better than the Straights do.

I think that the members or LPSG all try to be articulate and sound intelligent because that is the persona they want to convey to others. Since the majority of the posters are Homosexual, you might just be seeing a coincidence.

I think it is a fluke, as there are smart people everywhere, gay and straight.

Does anyone bother with the stats on this?

I love the idea of a gay kindergarten. Actually some threads are like that aren't they.

I don't know about it being a 'fluke'... I think the level of discussion on this board can often cause a certain kind of poster to want to join and contribute here...

...but I certainly think it's true to say there's a random distribution of everything from box-of-rocks dumb through to hyper-intellectual amid people of every gender and/or sexuality. Take a wander along Old Compton Street at some point and you'll see everything from specialist bookstores offering deeply philosophical studies of sexuality; via Average Joes with friends at streetside cafés; to a certain genre of shallow poser whose knowledge of the world might extend to knowing the price of Prada shoes, but little else. And of course, 1001 variables between all these extremes.

    i am both.

(gravelly 5 pack a day voice on) oh god honey. there's not enough disk space on this board to list all the ones i've come across. er, i mean met.

I can admit that ive posted a reply to a thread here on LSPG and kinda screwed up on what i meant...and that was a fuck up on my part. Id say that im pretty street smart and have a pretty good amt of common sense! I have a lot of friends that have a degree in Sarcasm, so ive learned to be somewhat of a smart ass ....hows that for intelligence?:biggrin1:

i don't think that's true at all. maybe just the one's you've seen have been articulate and junk. now as for myself, i'm just a nice person. chalk that up to me being a surfer and for being half polynesian. now, i'm shure if you go through the boards, you'll find some asshole gays as well as the cool gays. just as you'll find the mean straight dudes and dudettes, and the cool ones. you might even find an evil dyke and some nice ones. and then you might find people of all sexualities that are both.

EDIT: to be honest, most of the gay guys i know in real life (not my friends, just gay dudes i know) are sarcastic as shit, and are some of the meanest people ever.

Some research and studies were made and from what I've read, homosexual men's brain is slightly larger than their heterosexual counterparts. This could very well explain your observation. Interesting topic though.

Similar research was used by craniologists such as Heinrich Driesmans in the late 19th Century to assert that men were naturally more intelligent than women, since their brains were physically larger. He and others also used cranial size to posit a bogus hierarchy of races, reasserting the supposed pre-eminence of whites over other races (an approach ultimately taken to its nadir by the Nazis and their head-measuring experiments involving Jews). So I tend to view such studies as the one you allude to above with more than a hint of skepticism.

i think that research is bullshit. i don't believe there's any difference between a straight person's physiology, and a gay/lesbian's.

Drop by Lordpendragon. I'll introduce you to some phenomenally stupid gay men.

Of course, after I introduce you, you are on your own. I have no desire to get involved in a conversation with any of them.

    Just check Yahoo! chat rooms....

You'll change your mind about all gays being smart.

Joking aside, most of the gay guys I've met online actually have been on the intelligent side. But they could be trying to get into my pants so I never know.

You know, I have to say I can understand your line of thinking, LPD. I noticed the conversation levels when I first got here and it prompted me to start a thread on whether intelligence was related to big dicks, haha.

The truth of the matter is, that we have as many intelligent posters as we do because we foster those conversations more than most sites do. That makes us pretty self-selecting- people without very good grammar skills are less likely to post, so we're seeing only a few hundred people (out of our thousands of members) who think of themselves as capable writers.

The bar's been set, and posters who don't try pretty hard to be comprehensible get shouted down rather fast. We can't really attibute the intelligensia here to anything more than group demand.

I do remember reading an excerpt old study of homosexuality which noted that it was and 'illness' most prevalent among people of above average intelligence. However, if I remember correctly, the study was from 19th century England.

During this time in England, it is concievable that the upper class was significantly more accepting of casual homosexuality and this might have skewed the data. English upper-crust homosexuality believed itself to be the descendent of Athenian homosexuality and (like greek homosexuality) had certain explicitly intellectual elements attached to it -perhaps to help the participants justify it to themselves.

Of course, homosexuality's intellectual roots may create a slight bias towards the more intelligent even today.

Another possibility is that in western societies, the predominant attitude of intellectuals is liberalism (in the largest possible sense). In it's extreme form, the basic attitude of liberalism can be stated as 'if there is no victim, there is no crime'. There are of course varying degress, but all hold that the first question one should ask in determing the morality of an action is whether all parties consented (some say that this is the *only* question that should be asked, others think that other questions are germane to the issue and therein lies the difference between the varieties of liberalism). In our society, the more intelligent tend to gravitate towards this view while the less intelligent stick with more traditional forms of morality. This might explain why we find that at least in the west, homosexuality seems to have a correlation with intelligence, liberalism clearly favors the idea that the private behavior of two consenting adults either couldn't possibly, or isn't likely, to be immoral.

I should note that the interest in liberalism by the intelligentsia may only be a artifact of the west. In Islamic societies, it may be just the opposite, the theorist Qtub, for example.

LPD, a Statistics professor would phrase it like this: Your sample group is not sufficiently random.

There seems to be some sort of a survivorship bias towards intelligence among those who practice homosexuality. Quite simply, wealth has a certain correlation to intelligence, and homosexuality is often unacceptable in impoverished segments of society, in fact one might say that as average income rises, so does average tolerance towards homosexuality. (before the shouting starts, note that i said *average*) Thus, poorer gays might be encouraged to repress their feelings or to change them (obviously, its really unclear whether that can happen) and this also means that gays who are less intelligent will often not openly describe themselves as gay or act on their feelings in any way but the most clandestine way.

Note, this only explains a correllation between intelligence and the open practice of homosexuality... not a correlation between intelligence and homosexuality itself.

my suspicion is that intelligence differences will fade away as homosexuality becomes more generally accepted.

These notions of the British (and other European) upper classes having more of a connection with homosexuality are also bound up to some degree in projections by various socialist writers and organizations which maintained that such "non-(re)productive" unions were further indicative of decay within those classes, as their socio-cultural hegemony drew to a close. (In the German context, August Bebel's hugely influential Die Frau und der Sozialismus - which ran to an incredible 50 editions between 1883 and 1913 - is a key text in this regard).

Other socialist writers of the period (including not only numerous advocates of universal suffrage, but also Lenin) took a different view, asserting that homosexuality (and other so-called "intermediate sexualities", as they were termed at the time) was attested among all classes and deserving of egalitarian treatment. In-depth clinical studies (making use of interviews and diary-keeping by subjects) by the likes of Magnus Hirschfeld in the first two decades of the twentieth century similarly found no particular class-associations with regard to homosexuality, although it was noted that members of the upper classes were more likely to be able to put a name to their "sexual proclivities" than members of the lower classes, with the latter viewing them merely as unnamed desires.

    Interesting topic...

It's been my observation (admittedly limited) that gays dress better, pay more attention to the way they look, have more discretionary income, and have a disproportionate amount of artistic ability but no appreciable difference in intelligence levels than straight men. I belong to an organization that prides itself (smugly) on its intellectual endowments almost as much as many men here pride themselves on their sexual equipment or prowess, and at the meetings I have attended I didn't notice any pattern of ethnicity, sexual orientaion (as far as I could tell anyway), religious views, or geographical origin. Studies I read show that intelligence, as measured by IQ's at least, tends to gravitate toward the mean, which explains why two parents with high IQ's can produce children of average or even slightly above average intelligence, and parents with lower IQ's can produce children with average to above average IQ's. These studies do not take into consideration genetic anomalies, the ingestion of drugs or alcohol by pregnant mothers, etc., but I think they do explain that intelligence levels are not determined by anything other than a universal genetic code that guarantees the survival of the species. I have nothing but anecdotal evidence to support this, but I do think gay men tend be better educated than straight men.
