I don't know how it works in the US, but here in Holland military / army stands for a particularly strict order in society. With the use or appropriation of military / army accessories and clothing this (gay) culture express their opposition to society. This really makes a lot of sense. In the work of the artist Tom of Finland, for instance, there are a lot of tongue in cheek plays on macho stereotypes, everything from the common "biker" and "sailor" to costumes that come very close to resembling uniforms of the Nazis.
