I don't much like labels, but sometimes they are handy, I know, I know.

I know what you mean but I wish they weren't.

If anything, I would describe myself as bi, but if I were only attracted to males, I would say: homosexual.

I describe myself as male. If we're on a topic which involves my discussing my orientation I say I'm a homoseuxal or "a big mo".

I think (though I may be wrong) there is a difference between the two terms, not only in terms of formality, homosexual being more formal.

I agree. I prefer homosexual.

I think gay, in most cases, implies openness, a certain degree of conspicuousness, and finally a certain kind of lifestyle.

It's an understandable attempt, in my view, to mainstream homsexuals.

Homosexual seems to imply more reservedness, maybe even certain non-acceptance of the condition proper.

Not for me. I like the term. It's straightforward and honest. It's the term for what best describes my sexual orientation. In my case it does not imply any 'non-acceptance'.

It may be easy to tell someone is gay, but a homosexual can hide himself.

If you mean gay=flamboyantly effeminate I think you may be right (however it doesn't more often than not). But for me homosexual = confident in one's sexual orientation without it being an issue one way or the other... much as the word heterosexual implies the same.

Does this make any sense at all?

Yes.

... I'm pretty sure that we're all pansexual in reality if not in practice.

I like that: pansexual. Maybe that was precisely what Reich was trying to tell the world, but then they thought he had gone crazy.

Actually, I have a theory about Paradise and the Original Sin. I am afraid, though, I can't share it here, lest I will get banned. It may hurt people who believe in the Bible.

I can perhaps share with those who PM me.

For what it is worth, in the academic community (where such things can get unnecessarily complicated):

homosexual refers to sex, and is usually an adjective

gay refers to identification, and mostly means one considers oneself part of the "gay" community

queer refers to sexual non-conformity, especially when one is political about it

Of course, no terms are actually fixed and not everyone agrees, but I tend to say I am queer, as in "queer studies" because it is where I find the greatest number of allies.

I don't identify as gay, though I have a long-term male partner (that's another tough terminology issue) and my sexual preferences are nearly all male oriented. I just don't see that sexuality is something that defines me. So the word gay isn't for me. It smacks of an artificially constructed category to me.

I would say I'm homosexual - it seems to be more neutral term just focused on sexual preference or behaviour. I don't think it whiffs of a lack of self-acceptance. However, I do think it sounds a tad cumbersome in English.

The only term I really like is in French: homo sounds cool, it's not cumbersome, is neutral and isn't necessarily linked to identity.

I despise the term "gay".
For starters, I don't like that we've been named with a pre-existing word. Can't we have our own name?
...And of all the words to choose! Here's the #1 Merriam-Webster definition of "gay":
<<1 a : happily excited : merry <in a gay mood> b : keenly alive and exuberant : having or inducing high spirits <a bird's gay spring song.>>
I'm sorry, but howthefuck stoned was the ditz who first decided this was an appropriate word to use to name us? There is nothing remotely merry, exuberant, or high spirited about the lives & existences of so many homosexuals. At least not about my life anyway.

That one wouldn't work for me, as I've never had any sexual attraction to anyone of the opposite gender.
What's the antonym of "straight"? Bended? Curved? THAT'S IT! I'm a curved man!!

I think (but am not sure) they say "bent" in British English rather than "bended",

I also think that "gay" can be a very ironic term for most homosexuals.
