Recently, I was having a zoom meeting with teachers of German, who are situated in various states, almost all of whom teach at the high school level. School boards and administrations have begun to plan for their post-covid lives.
One of the areas being examined was the offering of courses. These educators teach German in schools, where it is a popular foreign language, so they don't feel as if they are under threat there.
Another area of revue encompassed the extra-curricular sports to be on offer. Two sports have declined in popularity, and, were singled out as being "gay", because, according to the students, there was a lot of grabbing of the crotch.
Water polo, in those schools that offer it, was one of those sports. Coaches and former students told existing students to "hit the guy in the nuts - no one can see it underwater". The other sport was wrestling. Coaches shouting to students to "check the guy's oil" (finger into the opponent's anus), or, to "put 5 on 2" (grab the opponent's balls). Several brave kids' parents called these aspects of the sports "sanctioned molestation". There have been calls to replace these sports with other ones.
When asked my opinion, I could only add: No person should ever be made to feel uncomfortable at any time. Neither activity is essential to an education. People need to have the courage to stop a wrestling match, if a coach shouts to a student to "check oil" or "put 5 on 2" - and - translate those orders into plain English. The embarrassment of being identified could be enough to stop the match. If not, someone needs to point at the offending coach, and, shout, "Your team forfeits! The other team wins."
Has anyone here heard of this? If yes, what, if anything was done about it?
