See, I hate when I come across a thread that I have intimate knowledge of (I am and gay and served in the Marine Corps) but the thread devolves into the same kind of childishness we see on the House and Senate floor before I can respond. Who cares? Personally I don't know why anyone cares if the guy or girl serving next to them is gay or straight as long as they are competent and committed. However, by the same token I don't understand why some gay people feel it necessary to turn their sexuality into a crusade. In my opinion both sides have made way more of this thing than is necessary.

Until a large group of people, political or religious, prevent you from doing something just on the basis of who you're attracted to, it'll always be hard to understand.

Good point. But I will say its dissapointing. He is a man I respect, but apparently he forgets his own principles...

The John McCain who sought the GOP nomination in 2000 is not the same man that ran in 2008. It was as if he saw what Rove was able to accomplish and he felt that this was the only way to win. He went back on everything he had said or believed in 2000. If the McCain from 2000 was the same one running in 2008 I might have voted for him. The old McCain was one I could respect, but this new one is a sad joke.

I think he's saying the same thing one guy(who is now one of the banned) once posted. He feels that gays should hide in closets once again and not ask, or fight for, equality. There are those who claim to not have a problem with gays they simply don't want to see or hear from us.

McCain is facing a tough race for reelection in Arizona. His opponent is far right wing and McCain is doing what he did in 2008, catering to the people he thinks he needs to win.

frankly, I could not be more happy to have gays serve, and if they are out there protecting my rights to be free, our safety, and our country, the least i can do is support their right to serve.

Barry Goldwater rocks! He started out as a hard-ass, but if you read his speeches and quotations over the course of his life, it's an inspiration how a person can evolve in their thinking. I wish some of our NeoCon friends would take a good look at this 'Father of Conservatism' and learn what 'conservative' meant - when it actually meant something. Some good readin. So true...I honestly don't give a damn who someone else sleeps with and I don't see them need to tell everyone who I sleep with. I can't see why the military is so damn hung up on this issue. I also can't see why so many gays think that every guy who likes to get it on with someone of the same sex needs to come out and tell everyone they are gay, march in pride parades, vote democrat, support gay marriage, and plaster rainbow and Human Rights Campaign stickers on the back window of their cars. LOL
