Gender identity and gender roles

Hi!

First of all, I have little idea about queer theory and so on, so forgive my ignorance, please!
I am a white hetero cis male, so my identity is not challenged in any way by the society and it can make difficult to understand other people struggles.

My question, in short, is:
in your opinion, if we would live in a world free of gender roles, it would still make sense to identify oneself as male or female? Or, how gender would shape our identity in a world where gender is purely a biological (sexual, maybe aesthetic) thing?

I know that it is stupid to think that we could get rid of gender roles, that's an uthopia... but I need to start with such extreme situation to better understand identity :)

Thanks!
