1 - Custer's Last Stand - not something sexual as it sounds but a fight with native Americans
    2 - A post code
3 - Tennessee, Alaska, Missourri, Mississippi, Montana. I can name them all actually and most of the state capitals, I used to be a quiz buff.
4 - It can only be Texas.

On a site I used to go on they used to have a quiz every Friday, it was fun especially all the moaning and griping from the people who didn't win :)

Y'see, I think the question is ambiguous, since it doesn't specify whether we're talking about the composer or the lyricist.

    (For people in US)
    1. the words are by Francis Scott Key, as far as I know, he was born here, the tune (Anacreon in Heaven) anonymous 18thc british.

    2. Sovereign Military Order of the Knights of thre Hospital of saint John of Jerusalem, Malta, Liechtenstein, Letzeburg, San Marino.

    3. Koeller/Merkel, Sarcozi/ Pillon, Fischer/Gusenbauer, Napolitano/Prodi, Kraus/Topolanik.

    4. what is somewhat obscurely called a cell phone here (it had to be explained to me)

Regarding your question for europeans as to which states the us 'purchased' from Mexico. Following the Mexican war, by the treaty of Guadeloupe Higalgo, after defeating Mexico militarily, the US forced Mexico to sell the following:

All of California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Texas, (more to Texas), Part of: Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado,Wyoming.

Later, because it was a better route for a railroad, the Gadsden Purchase was made, it added a bit to southern Arizona and New Mexico.

Composer: a bunch of drunken Brits; the lyricist: Francis Scott Key, who was only just barely born an American (born 3 years after the USA was confederated.)
