The down side to even giving 10K to trying towards alleviate suffering or doing the right thing, is that the paid staff usually takes a cut and the state government will still tax your damned purchases, reducing the assistance.

If I had the 10K I would go to one of the evacuation sites and ask for 5 volunteers with families to help me in doing some recovery work. I would get them out of eyesight and give them 2K a piece for "volunteering", wish them well and send them on their way.
