what about pakistan?
there's a culture where dishing out your own personal revenge is socially acceptable.
acid attacks are good if a girl turns you down.
''death by stove'' is one of the most common causes of death for women...angry husbands set them on fire and blame faulty cookers.
honour killings are a lovely tradition that has started to spread around the world.
revenge has a way of escalating.
Dolfette, those actions are not seen as revenge. They are seen as maintaining family values. Whereas we westerners see family values in repsecting the individual, the family unit in the East is seen as a corporate entity and everyone is dispensable to maintaining the family value.
acid attacks are good if a girl turns you down. the guy was hoping to score above his league to bring honor to his family.
''death by stove'' is one of the most common causes of death for women...angry husbands set them on fire and blame faulty cookers. I've seen this also referred to as bride burning. Usually because the dowry that the bride was due to bring over wasn't big enough. Sadly, the MIL can be in on this as much as the hsuband. And the bride's family doesn't want her back to the due shame to the family.
honour killings are a lovely tradition that has started to spread around the world. usually only done to the daughter because she has brought to the shame to the family by dating or sometimes even only being friendly to men that the parents don't approve of. I read not long ago that a Muslim father in Turkey buried his 15 yo daughter alive for this reason. Investigation into the case brought out that several family members helped the father. And becuase there was much dirt inside the victim's body, it seems pretty certain she was alive when she was buried.
But as I said, those perpetrators of these acts do not see as revenge but simply as business as usual. From what I read, any effort to help these women and to try to eliminate these practices comes from charities not from the respective governments. Funny how with Pakistan having had a female Prime Minister of many years, and what we deem as women's issues like these were not her agenda.
