And... sexual preference is entirely self-attributed. If he identifies as heterosexual he's heterosexual (in fact, I think he's still in a long term relationship with a cis-woman). And you don't get disqualified if you have sex with someone outside of a category - it's not defined by who you haven't had sex with.
