Hurricanes do form in the Pacific Ocean, just as they do in the Atlantic, but none of these storms seem to reach the continental U.S. Why not?

New Zealand's pristine and abundant rivers and lakes have long been central to its proud reputation as a land of breath-taking natural beauty - and fundamental to a clean, green, outdoorsy brand that's used to attract millions of foreign visitors every year.
But are its waterways really as sparkling and bountiful as the tourist ads suggest?
It seems not.
Although the issue hasn't attracted huge global attention, for some years now campaign groups such as Greenpeace have been ringing alarm bells about the deteriorating quality - and curiously diminishing volume - of New Zealand's fresh water, problems they say are both directly attributable to the country's most profitable industry and in danger of being exacerbated by government-backed projects in support of that industry.
People & Power asked filmmaker Naashon Zalk to find out more. His two-part investigation, which we are screening over consecutive episodes, raises troubling questions about what can happen when a nation's desire for economic growth, however understandable and justifiable it may be, takes undue precedence over the environment.

Weather isn't climate.

Climate can have an impact on weather, but they're not one and the same.

Houston getting hit by a hurricane isn't abnormal. The amount of rainfall they got was, but that isn't shown to be caused by a warming atmosphere. Instead, there were some pressure systems parked in the area that held the storm in place so it just sat there raining and raining and raining in one spot (as opposed to Irma which you saw move the whole length of Florida in 1 day). Additionally, the flooding wasn't caused by the earth warming so much as the way the city has developed in the last 20 years along with the rain volume.

I believe in global warming, and I believe mankind is having a significant impact on the extent of that warming, but just because the Earth is warming doesn't mean that a given hurricane is a product of it. We've had busier hurricane seasons in the past.

There are scientists considering whether or not the warming is going to produce more frequent and/or stronger hurricanes, but the jury on this is still out (scientists are more evenly split and there's not a consensus on this). You can find scholarly articles suggesting that it will be worse, but you will also be able to find ones suggesting they will be calmer.

In particular, using weather as proof of global warming is dangerous. It's dangerous because if the weather turns around and behaves, people will use that as an excuse (every time we get a blizzard, the talking heads on Fox try and use it as proof that global warming is a hoax. Trying to use individual hurricanes as proof of global warming just gives ammunition to that same line of faulty reasoning).

.
The jury is not still out. Scientists have reached consensus that, as a result of global warming, there will be more frequent and stronger hurricanes as the oceans warm. Please cite even one scholarly article that says that as a result of global warming, there will be "calmer" hurricanes.

No, doofus, the evidence right now points to less frequent, but stronger hurricanes.

https://www.gfdl.noaa.gov/global-warming-and-hurricanes/
https://www.skepticalscience.com/hurricanes-global-warming-basic.htm

etc.

But this is an issue that is still being researched by scientists, and it's still irresponsible to point at a hurricane and scream "Global warming!" One is weather, the other is climate.

When you start trying to play armchair meteorologist, all this crying wolf has risk that if we have an extended period of calm weather, that doofuses who don't believe in global warming will take that as evidence that global warming isn't real (because they aren't seeing the increase in storm activity that you're preaching as some kind of scientific gospel).

Hurricanes hit the US all the time and since well before the temperature ticked up as much as it has: https://www.mapsofworld.com/hurricane/dates.html

No, why? Here's something local, if reading your news upside down helps:
Hurricanes like Irma and Harvey are not caused by climate change

Here's something a bit more scholarly:
Irma, Harvey and Climate Change: It's Complicated

To be clear again
  • I 100% believe in climate change
  • I 100% believe in mankind's role in elevating the earth's temperature through CO2 emission
  • I 100% believe there will be disturbance to weather systems because of that.

What I do not believe is that we are at any kind of point with our data sets, modelling, etc, and with exception of sea level rise, to take individual storms and accurately claim that they occurred because of global warming or that global warming increased their severity without some bizarre set of conditions that weren't in place with these storms. I think this is fortune telling.

The impact of sea level rise is easier to demonstrate (with sea level approaching 1 foot higher today than it was in 1900 it's pretty easy to extrapolate what that will mean in terms of storm surge and such).

Ice sheets and glaciers are so massive that when they melt, their weight and gravity affect how their water is distributed around the world. Now, for the first time, scientists have combined gravity measurements from space and pressure measurements from the ocean floor to produce a global view of that pattern. For example, melting ice in Antarctica causes sea levels to rise 52% faster in California and Florida than it does in other parts of the world.

U.S.
Trump Administration Won’t Withdraw from Paris Climate Deal
U.S. has stated it will ‘not renegotiate the Paris accord’ but will review its terms

NEW YORK—Trump administration officials said Saturday the U.S. wouldn’t pull out of the Paris Agreement, offering to re-engage in the international deal to fight climate change, according to the European Union’s top energy official.

The shift from President Donald Trump’s decision in June to renegotiate the landmark accord or craft a new deal came during a meeting of more than 30 ministers led by Canada, China and the European Union in Montreal.

“The U.S. has stated that they will not renegotiate the Paris accord, but they will try to review the terms on which they could be engaged under this agreement,” European Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Arias Cañete said.

Last week, we told you about the push for subsidies to make the completion of Georgia's partially built Vogtle nuclear plant viable. This week, the call for subsidies is about support for existing nuclear units. Bloomberg reports that Exelon, having won zero-emissions credits to help subsidize money-losing plants in New York and Illinois, is now threatening to close the Three Mile Island facility in Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania legislature, when it convenes next month, is likely to consider creating emissions credits. Almost all the carbon-free power generated in the state is from nuclear. The Bloomberg New Energy Finance story is here.

Court Orders New Climate Impact Analysis for 4 Gigantic Coal Leases

The government took a long, economically 'irrational' leap of logic when it approved the Powder River Basin leases, the appeals court said.
BY JOHN H. CUSHMAN JR.

A federal appeals court in Denver told the Bureau of Land Management on Friday that its analysis of the climate impacts of four gigantic coal leases was economically "irrational" and needs to be done over.

Thousands of Low-Income Residents in Flooded Port Arthur Suffer Slow FEMA Aid

The Texas city, hit hard by Hurricane Harvey's extreme rainfall, has a large African American population and is bordered by refineries.

More than two weeks after a plea from the mayor of Port Arthur, Texas—"Our whole city is under water"—went viral, thousands of flooded-out residents remained homeless, and community leaders, angry with the speed of the federal government's response, were considering a former youth correctional facility for housing.

Extreme condition like we've seen in the West become more likely as global temperatures rise with climate change, scientists say.
BY GEORGINA GUSTIN

This story was updated on Sept. 14 with firefighting costs setting a record.

Wildfires burned across hundreds of thousands of acres in the American and Canadian West in early September, fueled by scorching temperatures that broke heat and fire records across the region. The fires helped make 2017 the U.S. government's most expensive year for wildland firefighting yet.

Beyond 2012: Why the World Didn't End

Editor's update, Sept. 20, 2017: Various people are "predicting" that world will end Sept. 23 when another planet collides with Earth. The planet in question, Niburu, doesn't exist, so there will be no collision. As you can see from the Q&A below, the story of Niburu has been around for years (as has the "days of darkness" tale) and is periodically recycled into new apocalyptic fables.

The cost to build utility-scale solar power plants in the U.S. fell to $1.03 per kilowatt in the first quarter of this year, hitting a key government benchmark three years earlier than expected. Solar power for a dollar! That translates to a levelized cost of electricity over the life of the plant, not including tax credits, of about 6 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh).
