President Donald Trump might have recently dismissed two major climate reports, but almost everyone else agrees we need to move fast on climate solutions. That’s why the city council of Washington, D.C. just voted unanimously to adopt a 100 percent clean electricity bill. How you like them apples, Don?

America’s capital city laid out a pretty ambitious climate measure this morning that includes incentives for electric vehicles, new standards for building efficiency, and an expanded carbon fee on natural gas, oil, and other polluting forms of fuel. D.C. plans to take money generated by that fee and invest it in a “green bank,” like a piggy bank that can only be tapped to help low and mid-income folks retrofit their homes and put up solar. The best news? The city aims to hit that 100 percent goal by 2032. That’s the most ambitious goal of any state or city in the U.S.A yet!

“This bill was two years in the making, involved everyone from neighborhood moms to top business leaders to champions on the D.C. Council,” said Mike Tidwell, a director of one of the organizations involved in the process. “We’re going to send clean energy to the White House and members of Congress whether they’re ready for it or not.”

This was a preliminary vote. The D.C. Council will vote on the measure again in December — most of the statute is expected to go into effect around Christmas. The White House Grinch better get ready for a whole lotta green coming his way!

Energy Speculators Jump on Chance to Lease Public Land at Bargain Rates

The Trump administration’s policy of encouraging more oil and gas drilling combined with a loophole in federal rules has been a boon for investors with a taste for gambling — and has drawn criticism that it is a bad deal for taxpayers.

Nations must triple efforts to curb greenhouse gas
Governments of the world need to triple their current efforts to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions in order to keep global warming under the crucial limit of 2 °C by 2030. The United Nations’ annual emissions-gap report projects that emissions will rise by 10% between 2017 and 2030 — they need to drop by 25% instead. The report also points out ways to close the gap, and says that scaling up and replicating existing policies could be enough, while also contributing to key sustainable development goals.

National Climate Assessment

UN
: Climate change, depleted resources leave world hungry
As climate change destabilizes every ecosystem on earth, food scarcity is going to worsen, according to a new report from the U.N. Food and Agricultural Organization. The U.N. assessment shows how climate change has depleted the world’s resources to the point where food systems are in peril. About 820 million people are currently malnourished, and if no action is taken, that number is only going to rise.

The invisible diminishment of insects

Insects are “the little things that run the natural world”, said naturalist E. O. Wilson — and this invisible army of environmental engineers is dwindling. Scientists are struggling to understand what it means to have animals still exist in their billions, yet also be horrifically diminished. “We see a hundred of something, and we think we’re fine,” says entomologist David Wagner, “but what if there were 100,000 two generations ago?”

Envoys from almost 200 countries will convene next week in Katowice, Poland, for an UN conference on reining in global warming. The goal this year is to draw up a rulebook for implementing the 2015 Paris Agreement (the one Trump backed out of). Here's what to watch.

On the Friday after Thanksgiving—weeks earlier than expected and with the nation focused on food comas and shopping deals—the Trump administration quietly released the congressionally mandated National Climate Assessment. The report catalogs the damage and financial losses projected for a climate now unmoored from 12,000 years of relative stability. The NCA's conclusion is that much of what humans have built, and are building now, is unsuited to the world as it exists. As time goes on, the added cost of living in that world may exceed hundreds of billions of dollars—annually. —Josh Petri

Even if we’re able to keep human-caused warming to less than 2 degrees C above pre-industrial levels, it might not be enough to save polar ice sheets. A new study from Nature Climate Change shows that ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica are likely on a path of irreversible decline. “Greenland & Antarctica will likely collapse, in very different ways,”tweeted Mike MacFerrin, a glaciologist known as “Ice Sheet Mike,” who wasn’t involved in the study. “Just depends how fast.”

- A team of indigenous parabiologists in Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts, documenting their forest’s wildlife, have uncovered a surprisingly wide range of species.
- The parabiologists belong to the Mro ethnic group and work with the Creative Conservation Alliance co-founded by Shahriar Caesar Rahman and colleagues. They set up camera traps, monitor hunting and consumption of turtles and other wild animals in villages; act as protectors of hornbill nests; and serve as community leaders.
- The Mro parabiologists have become so crucial to the researchers’ work that they are regularly listed as formal co-authors of scientific papers.
- The Mro-CCA partnership has earned Rahman several laurels, including, most recently, the 2018 Whitley Award, dubbed the “green Oscars.”

The White House keeps spreading disinformation about the National Climate Assessment. A press release from the EPA, using the words “fact check,” cites the Daily Caller in falsely claiming that the blockbuster report was based on worst-case scenarios. Katharine Hayhoe, a coauthor of the assessment, corrected this myth in a tweet: “The report considered a very broad range of scenarios, from one where carbon emissions go negative to one where they continue to grow.” Hats off to the climate scientists who probably needed a rest after finishing the 1,656-page tome, but now have to defend their work.

Whew, it’s been a big week for climate change news. Grist has been trying to make climate change mainstream for, uh, two decades now, so it feels like the moment of public reckoning has finally arrived. There’s no room for doubt that climate change is coming for our asses.

Here’s how we know:

Exhibit A: The Trump administration tried burying the Fourth National Climate Assessment by releasing it on Black Friday. Instead, Trump has been bugged about it, and coverage has skyrocketed (point your browser to Grist dot org). The report broke down climate consequences region-by-region in the United States. Each of the 10 regions lays out some pretty nasty effects. So we read each chapter and compiled this handy breakdown. Check it out — we guarantee you’ll find something you won’t like!

Exhibit B: On Tuesday, the U.N. released its annual report card on climate change. The bad news is we’re failing to address the biggest problem facing humanity. The good news? There’s so much room to improve! Cities and businesses could also help pick up the slack. The report is sure to be on the minds of world leaders as they gather in Poland for a climate summit next week.

Exhibit C: On Wednesday, a report compiled by a group of international experts called climate change “the biggest global health threat of the 21st century.” Yikes! Prognosis: more disease and way more disasters in the future.

Well, there you have it. The news is bleak, but at least it puts an end to all of this pussyfooting around climate change. Unless you’re our climate-denying president or you live under a rock, you know by now that climate change is real and it isn’t going to be pretty. Welcome to the Anthropocene.

On the surface, Noor Noor and Terry Burns don’t have much in common. The former is a 28-year-old student at Cambridge, getting a degree in environmental conservation that he plans to use back home in Cairo, Egypt. The latter sells lawn ornaments and homegrown vegetables out of her house in Jamestown, Pennsylvania, population 617.

Noor and Burns have never met but they're linked by the global trade in nonlethal weapons, a growing industry that burst into the headlines this week when the US Border Patrol tear gassed asylum-seekers on the country’s southern border. It’s the most recent high-profile incident in a decade that has seen rising use of tear gas around the world.

Where mining was the only show in town, now, the cattle industry is riding high. After years of drought, dwindling prices, and the live export controversy, properties you couldn't give away are today worth hundreds of millions of dollars. The smart money is snapping them up – Andrew ‘Twiggy’ Forrest, Gina Rinehart, and the most unlikely cattle baron of them all.

Climate Crisis

Nine years after Barack Obama decisively destroyed any hope for a meaningful global climate deal, and in the face of a Republican president determined to play climate supervillain, the bold leadership of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other newly elected members of Congress gives us a real reason to hope. Their plan for a Green New Deal, Naomi Klein writes, will no doubt be squashed in the short term, but the concrete, achievable agenda they outline sets up the possibility that Democrats could run and win in 2020 on an ambitious and comprehensive climate agenda modeled on the most successful economic stimulus package of all time.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump continues to do everything possible to accelerate climate change and intensify the damage it causes. As Sharon Lerner reports, the EPA is poised to roll back protections on streams and rivers that impact 58 percent of America’s drinking water.

Next week The Intercept is partnering with Sen. Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and others for a live town hall about solving the climate crisis.Watch live on our Facebook page Monday at 7 p.m. ET.

President Trump with California governor-elect Gavin Newsom, left, as Gov. Jerry Brown walks at right during a visit to a neighborhood destroyed by the Camp Fire in Paradise, Calif. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci, File)

Eyes on Pacific Gas & Electric: California’s governor-elect Gavin Newsom has had a long history already with PG&E, the state’s largest utility. And one of the most critical issues on his agenda when he takes office will be the fate of the company that could be on the hook for the deadliest fire in the state’s history. “As mayor of San Francisco from 2004 to 2011, Newsom has already had to work closely with PG&E, whose ties to the city stretch back more than a century,” Bloomberg News reports. “He was considered friendly with the company, opposing efforts to create a municipal utility. In the past year, PG&E — and almost all its top executives — gave to his gubernatorial campaign. And yet, Newsom also pushed PG&E to close one of the city’s last fossil-fuel power plants. As mayor, he berated the company for repeated equipment failures that caused manhole fires, blackouts and in one case, a sidewalk explosion that left a pedestrian with severe burns."

Flooding from Hurricane Florence is seen in Lumberton, N.C., on Sept. 17. (Carolyn Van Houten/The Washington Post)

Assessing the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season: "Hurricane season officially ended Friday, and, for a second straight year, generated costly and deadly storms that ravaged the U.S. coast," The Post’s Brian McNoldy and Jason Samenow report. "While not as active as ‘the hurricane season from hell’ the year before, the 2018 season spawned two terrible storms in Hurricanes Florence and Michael, which will be long remembered for their devastating toll in the Carolinas and the Florida Panhandle... Counting Harvey, Irma and Maria in 2017, Michael in 2018, and Typhoon Yutu last month, which smashed into the Northern Marianas (a U.S. territory), five Category 4 or stronger tropical cyclones have struck U.S. soil in the last two years, which is possibly unprecedented.”

— The Baltic Sea offers a preview of what’s to come with global warming: The marine life in the Baltic sea is seeing declining numbers. The herring has declined to about a third of their 1990s population, cod has gotten smaller and thinner and high temperatures have killed starfish and other fragile marine life. “It all could be a sign of things to come in a warming world,” The Post’s Luisa Beck reports. “The Baltic Sea is a sort of experimental pressure cooker for marine life, a test for how species fare — and whether they can survive at all — in conditions the world’s oceans may soon experience.” One expert explains pressures have hit in the region earlier and more intensely, Beck writes, “in part due to the Baltic’s small size."
