From the Climate Disinformation Database: Todd Kendall

Todd Kendall is executive vice president of Compass Lexecon, an economics consulting firm that has worked with several large oil companies, and a former assistant professor of economics at Clemson University. Kendall has consistently opposed the idea of divestment in the fossil fuel industry to reduce climate change, and has helped author multiple reports arguing this point for the Independent Petroleum Association of America. But maybe no one told him that a non-oil industry funded report recently found that banks financing the Dakota Access pipeline lost $4.4 billion in costs as people closed their accounts in protest.

2018: The Year of Day Zero and the Mega-Drought

Drought-no-swimming-hole_courtesy-univ-new-south-wales.jpg

By Justin Mikulka (8 min. read)

In 2018, Cape Town, South Africa, one of the wealthiest cities in Africa, faced the prospect of running out of water. This city of four million people was counting down the days to “Day Zero,” when they would turn on the taps and find them dry.

Ultimately, Cape Town's water conservation measures helped the city narrowly miss reaching Day Zero (for now).

However, the experience stands out as a warning of what's to come for large, developed population centers as climate change puts increasing pressure on the world's water in unprecedented and unexpected ways, from a mega-drought in the American West to drier soils preventing rivers and lakes from recharging when rain does arrive. Collapsing glaciers threaten Asia’s water supplies
The ‘third pole’ is the planet’s largest reservoir of ice and snow after the Arctic and Antarctic. It encompasses the Himalaya–Hindu Kush mountain ranges and the Tibetan Plateau, and hosts about 100,000 square kilometres of glaciers (an area the size of Iceland). Climate change threatens this vast frozen reservoir, the numerous water bodies its meltwater feeds and the communities it sustains.

Scientists despair as US government shutdown drags on
President Donald Trump finally has a science adviser (two years after taking office): meteorologist Kelvin Droegemeier. But what would US scientists say to him as the government enters day 17 of a shutdown that has ground research to a halt and forced thousands of federal researchers to stay home without pay? The drawn-out closure is now having real effects on scientists and their work. The National Science Foundation (NSF) has suspended reviews of grant proposals indefinitely, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has taken widely used weather and climate databases offline and NASA is facing potential disruptions to spacecraft launches. This is the third shutdown of 2018, and it is closing in on the record for the longest one ever (currently held by the 1995 event under President Bill Clinton, which lasted 21 days).
If you’re a researcher affected by the US government shutdown, we'd like to hear your story.Get in touch.

Birds are among the most trafficked creatures. Due to a lack of rehabilitation centers, where they would slowly be prepared for life in the wild, many birds are released prematurely.
That seems to have been the case with a group of cockatoos that were handed into the state after the infamous “water bottle bust” of 2015, in which a smuggler was caught with 23 yellow-crested cockatoos stuffed into plastic water bottles in his luggage.
JAKARTA — In May 2015, a wildlife smuggler was arrested at an Indonesian port. He had attempted to transport nearly two dozen yellow-crested cockatoos, stuffed in plastic water bottles, aboard a passenger ship.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to step in and block a climate fraud investigation into ExxonMobil, despite the oil giant’s best efforts to waylay the probe.

Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey has been investigating Exxonsince 2016, using a legal maneuver similar to a subpoena to get access to the company’s business plans, research efforts, and other hidden info going back decades. Healey is essentially trying to prove that Exxon knew about the effect of CO2 emissions on the planet decades ago and that the oil giant misled the public and investors about it to protect its profits. Getting access to these documents would shed light on an important piece of this puzzle.

Exxon tried to block Healey’s investigation by arguing that its headquarters weren’t in the state of Massachusetts. In other words, they said this particular AG doesn’t have jurisdiction over the oil giant in the first place. That didn’t fly with a number of courts: first, the Massachusetts Superior Court in 2017, then, the state’s Supreme Judicial Court last spring, and now the Supreme Court.

What do all of these rejections mean? “Massachusetts authorities can now test their theory that Exxon was aware of the hazards of climate change and the possible consequences,” InsideClimate News reports. Three cheers for due process!

It's real and it's happening - ice caps are melting, temperature is rising, climate is changing and ocean level is rising. The question is - wheter it's caused by humans. Definitely not. Humans are simply a accelerators of this process.. Climate change is natural. Every 10 000-30 000 years there are New Ice Age - bigger or smaller. There are some theories thar Europe is now getting into the phase of Small Ice Age and will completely feel it by year 2025-2030... And the paradox of one place being colder and other warmer is that the Northern hemisphere depends on the Gulf Stream (it transfers heat from the Subsaharian regions to Europe, US, Canada so that we were having warm summers and decent winters. Since the Ice caps are melting, thousands of gallons of sweetwater is dumped into oceans. The saltwater is mixed and disturbed by proportion of sweetwater and so changes the currents. If the Gulf Stream will seize to exist, it will mean that the whole Northern Hemisphere will basically freeze ( it's also called a freezer/frigde phenomen/paradox). The regions of Ecuator wouldn't be affected that much - they could get warmer and dryer, but there still would be climate meant for survival...

U.S. Supreme Court Refuses to Block Exxon Climate Fraud Investigation
Massachusetts' attorney general is trying to force Exxon to turn over decades of records involving what it knew about climate change and what it told the public.
BY DAVID HASEMYER

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to take up ExxonMobil's latest attempt to block Massachusetts' investigation into whether the oil giant misled the public and investors about climate change.

The decision clears the way for state Attorney General Maura Healey to force the company to turn over records as her office probes whether Exxon concealed its knowledge of the role fossil fuels play in global warming.

SEE ALSO:
Exxon's Own Research Confirmed Fossil Fuels' Role in Global Warming Decades Ago

In the case of the new United States estimates, extra oil and gas heating during a relatively cold winter and spiking emissions from factories, planes and trucks help explain the jump. The deeper message is clear: Closing coal plants won’t be enough to rein in planetary warming.
Calls for action may be increasingly urgent, but the partial government shutdown has put the brakes on some of the science that helps track phenomena like climate change. And while the Trump administration does not fully accept the science of global warming or the need to address the problem, young, progressive new members of Congress are pushing for a “Green New Deal” that is getting attention now that Democrats control the House of Representatives.
Whether the aborning plan goes anywhere is yet to be seen. This is Washington, after all.

upsets Trumps agenda,always good news

Carbon emissions are up 3.4 percent in 2018, thanks to growing pollution from the transportation, power plants, and industry. The findings suggest that the U.S. hasn’t figured out how to keep emissions from increasing as the economy grows. The report also makes clear that Trump’s environmental rollbacks could wipe out the progress Obama-era policies made at reducing the country’s carbon footprint.

Ahh, Pennsylvania. A top producer of coal and … the latest state to commit to slashing emissions? Wait a minute, that can’t be right.

It’s true, folks. Governor Tom Wolf, a Democrat just entering his second term, signed an executive order on Tuesday that should help the state reduce emissions to 80 percent below 2005 levels by mid-century. The order also establishes something called the “GreenGov Council,” a body that will help guide the Keystone State toward a greener future.

Among GreenGov’s goals: Replace a quarter of the state’s passenger cars with electric and hybrid vehicles by 2025 and buy up enough renewable energy to offset 40 percent of the state’s emissions. The new council will also help Pennsylvania’s government adopt sustainable practices like boosting energy efficiency in state buildings.

“In the absence of leadership from the federal government, states and cities are stepping up and doing their part to reduce emissions,” Wolf said in a statement. “Today, I am proud to declare the commonwealth’s intention to address climate change, the most critical environmental threat facing the world.”

"Unless they get their act together, which is unlikely, I have ordered FEMA to send no more money. It is a disgraceful situation in lives & money!"

Critics were quick to pounce on the conspicuous misspelling in the tweet, and "Forrest" soon became a trending topic on Twitter. The president later published a new tweet with the correct spelling.

This isn't the first time the president has criticized California for its handling of wildfires.

Back in November, he blamed wildfires across the state on quote gross mismanagement, sparking backlash from firefighters and state leaders.

Was the Ocean Cleanup Just a Pipe Dream?
After four months at sea, wunderkind inventor Boyan Slat's $360 million system is being towed back to port without having collected any plastic debris

Bad times in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch
The anti-climactic return of an ambitious floating device that was intended to gather rubbish from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch raises questions about whether such anti-pollution moonshots are just a waste of money. The project, known as the Ocean Cleanup, has cost about US$360 million so far and returned from its first test damaged and almost empty-handed. The idea is “easy, it’s digestible, and it plays to the lack of information on ocean plastics”, says environmentalist Marcus Eriksen. “We need all hands on deck to focus on prevention.”

One cat wipes out rare bird colony
A population of rare fairy terns has abandoned an Australian bird sanctuary after a feral cat seems to have killed dozens of chicks and adults. Local conservationists and politicians are calling for stronger laws declaring feral cats to be pests instead of pets. “For a nesting bird species, one cat, as you've seen, is enough to wipe out an entire colony," says seabird ecologist Claire Greenwell.

Congress is currently preoccupied with a fight over Trump’s plan for a $5.7 billion border wall, but hundreds of environmental organizations are laser-focused on defining the Green New Deal. And they think it’s time Capitol Hill got on board with their plan.

On Thursday, 600-plus groups including 350.org, Greenpeace, and the Sunrise Movement sent members of the U.S. House a letter with a list of carbon-cutting steps. This isn’t your typical advice to eat less meat, fly less frequently, or change your lightbulbs. It’s a batch of recommendations aimed at helping the country keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) — the boundary between “bad” and “we’re so screwed, everybody get in your bunker,” scientists say (just not those exact words).

The letter also calls on representatives to shift to 100 percent renewable energy generation by 2035, put an end to fossil fuel subsidies, and consult indigenous groups on the best way to shift away from a carbon-based society.

Of course, not all green leaders find the letter’s recommendations ideal or even realistic. The letter calls for a halt to nuclear energy, garbage incineration, and biomass energy, which would throw some states off of their renewable energy targets. Maybe that helps explain why the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Sierra Club didn’t endorse the letter. Still, arguing the fine points of the letter is a debate that’s probably worth having.

BREAKING NEWS
Scientists say the world’s oceans are heating up faster than previously thought, a finding with dire implications for climate change.
Thursday, January 10, 2019 2:05 PM EST
A new analysis, published Thursday in the journal Science, found that the oceans are heating up 40 percent faster than the United Nations estimated five years ago. The escalating water temperatures are already killing off marine ecosystems, raising sea levels and making hurricanes more destructive.

The fight over climate change isn’t just playing out in Congress and the executive branch; it has also made its way into American courts on many fronts.
On Monday, the Supreme Court refused to hear a challenge brought by Exxon Mobil to blunt an investigation by the Massachusetts attorney general, Maura Healey. Ms. Healey, a Democrat, is demanding documents from the oil giant in her investigation of the company’s statements and actions concerning climate change.
“The attorney general’s office has the authority to investigate Exxon’s conduct toward consumers and investors, and we are proceeding,” said Chloe Gotsis, a spokeswoman for Ms. Healey. “The public deserves answers from this company about what it knew about the impacts of burning fossil fuels, and when.”
A similar investigation in New York led to a lawsuit filed last year claiming the company committed fraud against shareholders and lied to the public. Exxon, which has argued that the investigations are politically motivated, declined to comment on the latest development.
State and local governments, too, are suing fossil fuel companies to recoup the costs of climate change. And Democratic state attorneys general are suing the Trump administration over its efforts to roll back environmental regulations, including many that were designed to counter climate change.
But one of the most interesting lawsuits over climate change has stalled. A coalition of young people is suing the federal government, asking the courts to make the Trump administration take action to reduce the country’s greenhouse gas emissions. The Justice Department has worked to derail the trial, which was scheduled to begin in October in Federal District Court in Eugene, Ore.
Last month the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit agreed to hear an appeal by the Justice Department that could significantly narrow the case or even get it thrown out. The judge in Eugene who would preside over the trial, Ann Aiken, has delayed it while the issues are sorted out.
The young people’s lead lawyer, Julia Olson, said in an interview that the courts had so far shown a willingness to allow the case to go forward and let the facts play out. “We need judges to stand up to the power of the executive branch of government,” she said.
Legal analysts are unsure of those prospects. “It is possible that the trial will never happen,” Michael Burger and Jessica Wentz wrote recently on Columbia Law School’s Climate Law Blog.

Trump’s border wall may cost Texas and Puerto Rico a chunk of their disaster aid

President Trump seems determined to find a way to fund a border wall between the U.S. and Mexico — even if it means diverting billions of dollars of aid originally earmarked for Puerto Rico and other communities recovering from disasters.

Now 21 days into the partial government shutdown (tied for the longest ever in U.S. history), it’s crunch time for Trump. Democrats remain unwilling to approve the $5 billion in wall funding that the president has requested to build a wall. One way around that political roadblock could be for Trump to declare a national emergency, which would allow him to use unspent Defense Department disaster recovery and military construction funds to start construction.

He Used His Climbing Skills to Steal Live $10K Eggs
Flying through the air on ropes from cliffs, rappelling from helicopters and climbing trees with grappling hooks, Rhodesian-born Jeffrey Lendrum loved collecting eggs. Specifically, the eggs of nesting raptors that Persian Gulf falconers were willing to pay a sheikh’s ransom for. After being nabbed at Birmingham Airport with Welsh peregrine falcon eggs taped to his chest, Lendrum managed to escape justice — until June, when authorities arrested him again at London’s Heathrow with vulture, eagle, hawk and kite eggs worth $130,000. Lendrum will soon begin nesting in a U.K. prison

Hawaiian Electric Companies, a group of utilities, last week released the winning bids it had received to build seven solar arrays with energy storage. The bids came in surprisingly low, showing that solar-plus-storage can be less expensive than fossil fuels.

The bids ranged from 8-12 cents per kilowatt-hour, compared to 15 cents per kilowatt-hour for fossil fuel power, the company said.

“We believe strongly that the renewable energy transformation should benefit everyone and these seven projects will help stabilize customer costs while reducing our reliance on imported fossil fuel and cutting greenhouse gas emissions,” said Shelee Kimura of Hawaiian Electric in a statement.

This is a big deal because renewable energy-plus-storage can function much like a fossil fuel power plant, storing power when the sun is shining or the wind is blowing and using it later. This kind of electricity is dispatchable, which means that a system operator can turn it on or off as needed.

Africa's Ancient Life-Giving Baobabs Are Dying

These Seussian flora need their Lorax. The bulbous mature specimens’ trunks are frequently dry, unstable and on the verge of collapse, and fewer saplings are spouting. The trees, which can grow up to 100 feet tall, are an integral part of Africa’s spirit and landscape. Communities meet around baobabs and worship their ancestors at the trees’ roots. The leaves and fruit have sustained hunter-gatherers for centuries, with the oldest known tree predating Julius Caesar. Although scientists suspect climate change, further investigations are necessary to understand the degeneration — before the last baobab falls.
