Tracking the transition: The ‘forgotten’ emissions undoing the work of Australia’s renewable energy boom

Hugh Saddler, Australian National University; Frank Jotzo, Australian National University

Renewables form an ever-greater share of the electricity mix. But elsewhere in the energy sector – in transport, industry and buildings – emissions reduction is very slow.

If you regularly read this space, you know we don’t conform to any sort of formula. Whatever we want to say, we say. This week, I just want to make you laugh, or at least groan.

An old sea captain was sitting on a bench near the wharf when a young man walked up and sat down.

The young man had spiked hair and each spike was a different color: green, red, orange, blue, and yellow.

After a while, the young man noticed that the captain was staring at him.

“What’s the matter, old timer, never done anything wild in your life?”

The old captain replied, “Got drunk once and married a parrot. I was just wondering if you were my son!”

If you like your crustaceans orange, purple, and asymmetrical, this is the crab for you. Granular claw crabs hide out in mussel beds, under coralline algae, or even squished between giant anemones in the intertidal zone to keep their soft bellies safe from probing bird beaks. While they each have one formidable claw, it’s typically used for protection and is not the primary tool for catching food. Instead, the crabs use other appendages to filter tiny bits of organic matter out of the water. If you find one, there might be another nearby—granular claw crabs often stick with a buddy.

This colorful crustacean was found on Calvert Island, British Columbia, during the first joint bioblitz (a focused effort to make field observations of biodiversity) held by the Hakai Institute and the Smithsonian Marine Global Earth Observatory (MarineGEO). MarineGEO does field research on marine biodiversity with various partner organizations, and some of their data is now publicly available on iNaturalist, a community science database. The MarineGEO iNaturalist Project showcases the weird and wonderful creatures found at partner locations around the world, including the Hakai Institute’s ecological observatories in British Columbia.

Everyone—from scientists to naturalist neophytes—can participate in iNaturalist. Use it to learn more about the plants and animals you encounter and contribute to biodiversity science by signing up at inaturalist.org.

What We’re Reading

Fifteen years ago, a team of scientists reached “peak pessimism” and mathematically projected in a widely publicized paper a global fisheries collapse by 2048. This year, on World Oceans Day, the lead author of that study, Boris Worm, writes that he now has reason to hope that we might “have a fighting chance to leave an ocean to our children that is more abundant, more productive and more resilient than the one we inherited.” (Science, The Hill)

Although an oil spill has thus far been averted, a burning cargo ship off Sri Lanka has lost tonnes of plastic pellets, aka nurdles, and they’re coating beaches in knee-high drifts. Sri Lankan researcher Asha de Vos has been tracking the nurdles as they come ashore. (Mongabay)

And speaking of things falling off ships and into the ocean, 3,000 shipping containers were lost into the Pacific Ocean alone last winter. (The Revelator)

On July 3, the European Union is banning the sale of 10 plastic products that commonly wash up on the continent’s shores. It’s part of the EU’s comprehensive and aggressive strategy to tackle plastic waste. (Yale360)

A new study shows that shorebird chicks know when to be quiet, and thus avoid predation, even before they’ve hatched. (Audubon)

Two marine scientists weigh in with four actions for how Canada could “hardwire” the oceans to meet the country’s commitments to climate change. (Globe and Mail)

New research points to a mysterious mass extinction 19 million years ago, from which shark diversity has not recovered. (New York Times)

The World Health Organization had good intentions with this visual explainer about vaccine equity, but it has agitated shark researchers and advocates in a big way. They’re concerned the PSA feeds into the pervasive misunderstandings about sharks and could further fuel their persecution.

UK promises vaccines to climate negotiators amid G7 diplomacy

After months of speculation, the UK is finally revealing some of its planning to Covid-proof Cop26.

Together with the UN, the UK is exploring options to provide vaccines to "accredited delegations" that would be unable to get them otherwise.

The news was welcomed by diplomats in developing countries for whom full participation in the critical climate talks, scheduled in November, hinges on equal vaccine access for poorer nations. But their optimism is cautious.

It remains unclear whether vaccines will be offered outside official government delegations to observers, civil society groups and journalists from low-income countries attending the talks.

Some negotiators are still wondering whether they will need to quarantine upon arrival in the UK if border restrictions continue to apply in the autumn.

And even if nearly all Cop26 participants are vaccinated, it remains unclear what protocols would be put in place if negotiators tested positive and were asked to isolate or if someone fell seriously ill.

Ensuring the safe and full participation of developing country delegates, although critical, is only one small part of the issue at stake. One African diplomat told Climate Home News the decision to offer vaccines to climate delegations was “an insignificant gesture" in comparison to the scale of the effort needed to vaccinate the entire population of low-income countries.

Vaccine access has risen to the top of agenda for the leaders of the G7 group of rich nations, meeting for a long weekend in a hotel overlooking a beach in a pristine part of UK's southern coast to address the world's most pressing issues: the response and recovery to Covid-19 and climate change.

They are expected to agree a plan to turbocharge vaccine aid and pledge a billion doses to poorer nations by the end of 2022. The US has promised 500 million doses of the jab and the UK 100 million doses within the next year.

As Oxfam's pan-Africa programme director Peter Kamalingin told reporters earlier this week: "The G7 is a test of global solidarity. If we don't address this pandemic, it's going to be much more difficult to address the climate crisis."

Africa accounts for under 1% of the over 2.1 billion doses administered globally, according to the World Health Organisation.

Message From the Editor
About 100 miles off the coast of Guyana, along the northern edge of South America, a new exploratory well is being drilled on behalf of ExxonMobil. The drilling takes aim at a 9 billion-barrel oilfield recently discovered in the waters off Guyana. Exxon is now putting Guyana at the heart of its plans to press on hunting for new fossil fuel supplies despite the climate crisis. Sharon Kelly reports.

Meanwhile, a new report finds that the productivity of ExxonMobil’s wells in the Permian basin declined in 2019, raising “troubling questions about the quality” of its assets. Exxon has long described its Permian holdings as “world class,” and the company prides itself on being an industry leader in both size and profitability. Yet, it’s wells in the region produced less oil on average in 2019 than they did in 2018, according to a new report from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis. Nick Cunningham explains.

Finally, in case you missed it, more than 2,000 people began gathering at an undisclosed location in Northern Minnesota earlier this week, answering a call from Indigenous Anishinaabe people and a coalition of environmental groups to disrupt the construction of the Line 3 pipeline. Nearly 200 people were arrested while Indigenous and environmental groups, and even some elected officials, condemned the aggressive use of a helicopter to disperse protesters. Read more here.

Oil Drilling in the ‘Land of Water’: ExxonMobil Hunts for More Fossil Fuels in Guyana Amid Sea Level Rise Fears
— By Sharon Kelly (7 min. read) —
About 100 miles off the coast of Guyana, along the northern edge of South America, the drillship Stena Carron spent Saturday, June 5 drilling a new exploratory well on behalf of ExxonMobil. The drilling takes aim at a 9 billion-barrel oilfield recently discovered in the waters off Guyana. Exxon is now putting Guyana at the heart of its plans to press on hunting for new fossil fuel supplies despite the climate crisis.

Meanwhile, much of Guyana itself was underwater following heavy rains that unleashed historic flooding. Over 25,000 households — in a small country with just over 200,000 homes — have been inundated.

Exxon is Telling Investors its Permian Fracking Projects are ‘World Class’. The Data Says Otherwise.
— By Nick Cunningham (4 min. read) —
ExxonMobil’s production numbers in the Permian basin in West Texas and New Mexico appear to have deteriorated in 2019, according to new analysis, calling into question the company’s claims that it is an industry leader and that its operations are steadily becoming more efficient over time.

Chastened by years of poor returns and rising angst among its own shareholders, ExxonMobil narrowed its priorities in 2020 to just a few overarching areas of interest, focusing on its massive offshore oil discoveries in Guyana and its Permian basin assets, two areas positioned as the very core of the company’s growth strategy.

Hundreds Arrested at Line 3 ‘Treaty People Gathering.’ Water Protectors Vow To Continue Until the Pipeline is Canceled
— By Nick Cunningham (5 min. read) —
Nearly 200 people were arrested on Monday while protesting the Line 3 pipeline, a long-distance tar sands pipeline that runs across Indigenous land and threatens food and water resources, including the headwaters of the Mississippi River. Indigenous and environmental groups, and even some elected officials, condemned the aggressive use of a helicopter to disperse protesters.

More than 2,000 people began gathering at an undisclosed location in Northern Minnesota over the weekend, answering a call from Indigenous Anishinaabe people and a coalition of environmental groups to disrupt the construction of the pipeline.

Shale Oil Fraud Case Reveals Executives Ignore Their Own Engineers and Mislead Investors
— By Justin Mikulka (7 min. read) —
In April, a judge ruled that a lawsuit filed by former investors in the shale oil company Alta Mesa could proceed. Their case alleges multiple instances of fraud and reveals that not only did engineers in the company warn executives that they were lying to investors about oil production estimates but that executives went on to ignore those warnings.

Alta Mesa is among a string of oil and gas companies that in recent years have either been accused or found guilty of fraud, including ExxonMobil and Miller Energy.

From the Climate Disinformation Database: The American Farm Bureau Federation

The American Farm Bureau Federation calls itself the “unified national voice of agriculture” in the US. The AFBF acts as the cornerstone organization in a network of affiliated state-level Farm Bureau non-profits and insurance providers. For decades, the Farm Bureau network, which has links to the fossil fuel industry, lobbied against climate action and spread climate science denial in farming communities and in capitals across the US. Despite softening its messages on climate science, as of August 2020 the AFBF opposes a “near term” end to the use of fossil fuels. It also continues to support fracking, expanding the use of coal and other forms of fossil fuel production.
