Antarctica is on the frontline of the fight against climate change. Russia has failed to back the creation of what would be the world's largest ocean sanctuary in Antarctica. It's the only country that's not behind the protection efforts, after China gave its support for a revised international plan.

A new NASA study says that an increase in Antarctic snow accumulation that began 10,000 years ago is currently adding enough ice to the continent to outweigh the increased losses from its thinning glaciers.

New school to train China's drone pilots

New aviation schools are opening across China to meet a growing demand for commercial pilots to fly small remote-controlled aircraft, or drones.
It's estimated the country's maintenance, mapping, filming and agricultural industries will need over 10,000 drone pilots this year.
There are less than 1000 people licensed to fly drones and new schools, like that just opened in Beijing, are hoping to give students the skills they need to get work as professional remote control pilots.

Prize-winning writer and environmentalist Bill McKibben is seeing progress when it comes to fighting global warming.

First, the Keystone XL pipeline was delivered a blow Wednesday when a request to pause a review of the project was denied, likely setting up its rejection by the Obama administration.

And Thursday, the day he was the featured speaker for IPFW’s Omnibus Lecture Series, the New York attorney general’s office announced that an investigation had been initiated to determine whether Exxon Mobil had lied to the public about the risks of climate change.

PEAT fires in Indonesia el nino the cause! maybe'

Counting the Cost - Counting the cost of Indonesia's forest fires

Published on Nov 10, 2015

More than 100,000 fires have engulfed Indonesia this year, destroying forests and farmland, and spewing hazardous smoke into the atmosphere.

Leading to a public health crisis, some 40 million people have been affected and around 140,000 have needed hospital treatment.

Pumping out more carbon dioxide in the last three weeks than Germany produces in an entire year, Indonesia has now surpassed the United States as the world's second-largest emitter of greenhouse gases.

While the government struggles to contain the haze from the forest fires, it says the crisis will cost the economy more than $33bn this year.

Luca Tacconi, the director of the Asia Pacific Network for Environmental Governance, joins Counting the Cost to discuss the economic impact of the crisis.

They’re not space invaders bent on conquering earth, but a weird phenomenon whipped up by Mother Nature - probably to keep us alert. Lenticular clouds over South Africa provided the kind of show that could easily be mistaken for an alien invasion.
Looking like a scene from ‘Independence Day’, this beautiful invasion is sure to take the breath away, as it did for Cape Town residents on Sunday. Few knew those were actually lenticular clouds – wonders of nature who owe their name to their shape – a lens-like protrusion.

They’re usually formed by air flowing over mountains. According to EarthSky, “a series of large-scale standing waves may form on the mountain’s downwind side. If the temperature at the crest of the wave drops to the dew point, moisture in the air may condense to form lenticular clouds. As the moist air moves back down into the trough of the wave, the cloud may evaporate back into vapor. So lenticular can appear and disappear relatively quickly."

But they’re not exclusive to mountains – all it takes are the right meteorological conditions, chief among them the presence of “sheer winds created by a front.”

And “for all of these reasons, lenticular clouds are often mistaken for UFOs.”
