Gruesome Tumors on Sea Turtles Linked to Climate Change and Pollution
turtle hospital in Marathon, Florida is treating an increasing number of green sea turtles affected by fibropapillomatosis (FP), a global sea turtle disease caused by a herpes virus. The disease leads to the formation of tumors on the turtles’ eyes, flippers and internal organs. The possible culprits? Pollution and warming waters.

In all, the Florida Keys-based Turtle Hospital rescue and rehab facility has admitted 93 sea turtles in 2014, 68 in 2013 and 56 in 2012, the The Miami Herald reported.

bummer as always thought of Nevada as the USAs capital of solar .. maybe it will remain so .
How Money in Politics Is Killing Rooftop Solar in Nevada

You may have noticed that the influence of corporate money in politics has become a hot issue on the campaign trail. All the candidates are talking about it, from Bernie Sanders to Ted Cruz.

And Greenpeace has been chattering more than usual about it since we, along with more than 20 partners, launched a pledge asking all candidates to start fixing democracy by both rejecting campaign contributions from fossil fuel companies and protecting voting rights.

With all that chatter, it may be easy to lose sight of what is actually wrong with big money in politics. What are the real-world consequences of politicians bought by corporate money and influence? How does a cozy relationship between a governor and a lobbyist impact you and me?

More than 60 rotting waste piles are blighting communities in areas including Wiltshire, Kent, the West Midlands, Yorkshire and Fife.

The Environment Agency said, in 2014-2015 it was dealing with 50 abandoned sites in England, 10 of which contain more than 5,000 tonnes.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency said it was handling the clearance of another 14 sites of varying sizes.

Neil Young Takes His Anti-Monsanto Message on the Road

Grammy Award-winning artist Neil Young has been a powerful presence in music for the past 50 years. In addition to his artistic career, Young has become a vocal advocate for social justice, working specifically to highlight issues that impact farmers and the food system. In 1985, Young joined Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp to launch Farm Aid to raise awareness about the loss of family farms and to raise funds for family farmers. Today, Farm Aid contributes to the campaign for transparency around genetically modified foods.

Neil Young has become a vocal advocate for social justice, working specifically to highlight issues that impact farmers and the food system.
In 2015, Young released his 36th studio album, The Monsanto Years, a concept-based criticism of multinational agrochemical and biotechnology giant Monsanto, the world’s biggest seed company. A collaboration with Willie Nelson’s sons Lukas and Micah, the album also condemns other industrial agriculture giants like Syngenta, Dow, Dupont and Bayer—corporations that, like Monsanto, have garnered control of global seed production.

In 2013, India’s former Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar accused US companies of derailing the nation’s oilseeds production programme. Similar claims had been made before. For instance, we could revisit the 1998 mustard oil tragedy. At the time, Rajasthan Oil Industries Association claimed that a “conspiracy” was being hatched to undermine the mustard oil trade and charged that the “invisible hands of the multinationals” were involved (see the article ‘Monsanto and the Mustard Seed

India was almost self-sufficient in edible oils by the mid-1990s. Its farmers met 97% of domestic need. However, its edible oil import bill has increased dramatically since then. By 2013, India was the world’s second biggest importer of edible oils. Food and trade policy analyst Devinder Sharma notes that between 2006-07 and 2011-12 alone edible oil imports rose by 380%.

Michael Moore: My New Movie Will Change Americ
In the film, Where to Invade Next, Moore travels to countries throughout Europe and also Tunisia to “pry loose from them the tools they’ve been using to make their countries happy, shiny places,” he writes, with the goal of “show[ing] millions of Americans what these countries have been hiding from us.” Such tools range from eight weeks paid vacation in Italy to a year of paid maternity leave in Scandinavia to women with “true equality and power” in Tunisia to trusting prisons in Norway.

Michael Moore’s newest documentary, Where to Invade Next, presents uncharacteristically optimistic outlook.
Moore, who is known for such works as Bowling for Columbine andCapitalism: A Love Story, penned an open letter to supporters last week explaining how a recent bout of pneumonia and subsequent hospital stay forced him to cancel all television appearances promoting the film.

Illegal Chilean Sea Bass Fishing Could Be Coming to an End, Thanks to Sea Shepherd

Sea Shepherd’s hunting of poaching vessels in the remote Southern Ocean is not as well known as its efforts to stop Japanese whale hunters, but for one species it’s a lifesaver.

The deep-sea-dwelling Patagonian toothfish that inhabits the region has been a lucrative target for illegal fishing. Six vessels, which Sea Shepherd has dubbed the Bandit 6, have been raking in big bucks skirting international fishing regulations. The ships are capable of catching more than $1 million worth of toothfish—popularly known as Chilean sea bass—before returning to port.

Victory: Obama Protects 1.8 million Acres of California Desert
Michael Brune | February 12, 2016 12:03 pm | Comments

nia famously has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to landscapes: spectacular mountains, unique redwood forests and a coastline that ranges from idyllic beaches to rocky cliffs. But as many a lottery winner can tell you, even the most fabulous wealth can be squandered all too easily if one isn’t careful. And once you’ve lost an ancient forest, an unspoiled coastline or a pristine desert, it’s impossible to get it back.

That’s why it’s great news that President Obama has picked up where Congress left off more than 20 years ago when it passed the California Desert Protection Act. The newly designated Mojave Trails, Sand to Snow and Castle Mountains National Monuments protect parts of the Mojave and Sonoran wilderness that were being squeezed by growing populations in both southeastern California and southern Nevada as well as facing threats from mining and other industries.

5.7 earthquake hits near Christchurch
Part of a cliff face crumbles into the sea when a 5.7 magnitude earthquake hits near Christchurch, New Zealand.

Wellington: There were harrowing near misses but Christchurch has emerged from a magnitude 5.7 quake with no deaths and little damage and must wait to see what happens next.

Two kids from Taylors Mistake, on the city's southeastern extremity, were clipped by rocks that fell on a cliff face. Three people were also in a cave at the sight and a couple enjoying a Valentine's Day picnic ran for their lives, media reported.

The quake struck shortly after 1pm on Sunday just a day after Prime Minister John Key visited the city he grew up in to highlight its rejuvenation and eight days before the fifth anniversary of a devastating 6.3 quake that killed 185 people.

GeoNet Science, the official New Zealand earthquake monitoring service, warned of aftershocks following the "severe intensity" quake.

There have been more than 40 aftershocks, GeoNet reported.

A police spokesman said there were no reports of damage or major injuries, although the tremor did cause "some major rocks to be dislodged into the sea" near Sumner.

When most people think of California, the first images that probably come to mind are the state’s sun-soaked beaches, the Hollywood hills and the fog-drenched Golden Gate Bridge. But a new documentary web series, Spotlight California, wants to show viewers the California you don’t see on postcards.

The five-part series, hosted by actress and comedian Kiran Deol, is investigating the impact of drought, water and air pollution, and gas price gouging in California.

Look Into My Eyes

Photographs by David Liittschwager
Eyes are nature's most exquisite creation, and the animal kingdom holds an endless array of variations: Sea stars have eyes on the tips of their arms, for one. All eyes detect light, but the key to understanding how and why such an array exists lies not only in how the eyes are made, but also how they are used to navigate each animal's environment.

“IF YOU ASK PEOPLE WHAT ANIMAL eyes are used for, they’ll say: same thing as human eyes. But that’s not true. It’s not true at all.”

In his lab at Lund University in Sweden, Dan-Eric Nilsson is contemplating the eyes of abox jellyfish. Nilsson’s eyes, of which he has two, are ice blue and forward facing. In contrast, the box jelly boasts 24 eyes, which are dark brown and grouped into four clusters called rhopalia. Nilsson shows me a model of one in his office: It looks like a golf ball that has sprouted tumors. A flexible stalk anchors it to the jellyfish.

Compound eyes evolved rapidly during the Cambrian period, more than 500 million years ago. A fossilized arthropod eye from Australia with 3,000 lenses (right) would have been able to see even in dim light. “It’s amazing how little has happened since then,” says Dan-Eric Nilsson. DEFENSE & SECURITY

The Pentagon Is Betting Big on Space Warfare — Against China and Russia
By Greg Walters

February 12, 2016 |
The US Defense Department has asked Congress for $108 million to fund a new facility in Colorado dedicated to drawing up plans and running experiments for war in outer space, as anxiety grows about the possibility of extraterrestrial conflict with China or Russia.

"Potential adversaries are rapidly developing capabilities to deny the US and its allies' use of space during a conflict," US Air Force Major General Robert D. Rego, the US Strategic Command official responsible for the center, told VICE News.

The facility he'll run is called the Joint Interagency Combined Space Operations Center, which goes by the awkward military handle JICSpOC (pronounced jick-SPOCK). Its job, he said, will be to "better integrate our space operations in response to these threats."

The funding request follows Defense Secretary Ash Carter's preview last week of the Pentagon's budget for fiscal year 2017, which he promised would enhance America's "ability to identify, attribute, and negate all threatening actions in space."

The Pentagon Is Betting Big on Space Warfare — Against China and Russia | VICE News

On a spring evening last March, a handful of people gathered at a city council meeting in Flint, Michigan to voice their concerns. One man talked about the need for new playground equipment at Potter Longway Park. Another said he was worried that a city development project was neglecting poor neighborhoods.

But as the two-hour meeting dragged on, one issue was brought up again and again: the city's sometimes brown, often foul-smelling tap water — and the lack of action on the part of officials to do anything about it.

Tsunami Memories

Photograph by Alejandro Chaskielberg
The tsunami unleashed by a massive earthquake in Japan five years ago devastated the small fishing community of Otsuchi. Photographer Alejandro Chaskielberg’s first instinct was to create black-and-white images of the destruction, until he discovered a waterlogged photo album. The colors of the smudged photographs became the palette for a dreamlike series of tinted photographs remembering a place once full of life.

Still standing on a small island in Otsuchi Bay, the Benten Shrine somehow survived the deluge. Chaskielberg shot the inspiring sight at night because he “wanted to tell the story of Otsuchi in an intimate way—and show how photography can help us build new memories for the future.”

Local councils still using pesticide that WHO warns 'probably causes cancer'
By the National Reporting Team's Josie Taylor
Posted about 2 hours ago

PHOTO: Glyphosate was originally trademarked as "Roundup", used to kill weeds by farms, houses, and councils.(ABC Rural: Rose Grant)

MAP: Australia
Councils across Australia are using the pesticide glyphosate to kill weeds in sensitive areas like playgrounds, despite a World Health Organisation (WHO) warning the chemical probably causes cancer.

Key points:
  • Federal authorities are re-assessing the risks of glyphosate to humans
  • Councils are free to use chemical until the assessment is changed
  • Insurers, lawyers warn councils to reconsider use of the chemical
Glyphosate was originally trade marked as "Roundup" and is commonly used by households, farms and local councils.

Last year, the WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) upgraded its assessment of glyphosate from "possibly" to "probably carcinogenic to humans".

The Australian Pesticide and Veterinary Medicine Authority (APVMA) and the Federal Department of Health are now re-assessing the risks of glyphosate to humans.

The APVMA told the ABC it expected that investigation to be finalised in May or June.

In a statement the APVMA said, "It was important to note that the hazard assessment conducted by IARC was not a complete regulatory risk assessment".

Volunteers Map Some of the Earth’s Most Remote Areas to Help Aid Workers
By Pierre-Louis Caron

February 16, 2016 | 10:25 am
Sixty or so mapping enthusiasts gathered last Thursday in a hotel in central Paris for the Mapathon, an event organized by the Missing Maps project.

Founded by the American and the British Red Cross, Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team, and Doctors Without Borders (MSF), Missing Maps lists its objective as mapping "the most vulnerable places in the developing world" to help the NGOs and individuals who "respond to the crises in those areas."

The aim of Thursday's event was to collectively map a sprawling area of Uganda using satellite images and data recorded by field teams, in order to facilitate MSF's activities in the area.

During the three-hour event, amateur cartographers were able to pinpoint "more than 4,000 buildings and nearly 170 kilometers (105 miles) of road," organizers said.

Two days before the Paris event, volunteers gathered in a former whiskey distillery in Glasgow, Scotland, to map residential areas and several streets of South Kivu province, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Missing Maps initiative saw the light of day in November 2014. Ever since, it has been providing aid workers and locals with invaluable maps to some of the most remote areas of the planet. The maps are created by volunteers, and are then checked by the team behind the project.

"The idea came to us following lengthy discussions among NGO officials," explained engineer Dale Kunce, one of the founders of the project. Kunce, a Red Cross worker based in the US, coordinates many of the ongoing online mapping initiatives.

"We'll soon have more than 7,000 volunteer contributors," Kunce told VICE News. "The project is really gathering momentum."

The way the project works is fairly simple. Responding to a request by an NGO with a need for a particular map, volunteers analyze satellite images — which are available online for free — to determine the location of buildings, streets and public landmarks. Images of buildings that have just been added to a map are streamed in real time.

Once the information has been verified and cross-referenced by teams on the ground, a free, unlicensed map is made available online.

"Field teams record street names, the function of various buildings — in short, anything you can't see from the sky," noted Kunce.

"More than 2 million buildings have already been mapped — that's 14 million people we've put on the map."

Clouds float above the east Greenland ice sheet and glaciers.

Scientists have long known that the melting of the Greenland ice sheet has been a big contributor to the rise of sea levels around the world in recent years -- and now, an international team of scientists has identified a surprising factor that could be driving the melting.

It turns out that clouds may be playing a bigger role in the melting process than previously thought by acting like a blanket that traps heat above the ice sheet at night, increasing meltwater runoff.

Clouds are responsible for about 25 percent of the Greenland ice sheet meltwater runoff that we see today, Kristof Van Tricht, a Ph.D. student of earth and environmental sciences at the University of Leuven in Belgium and lead author of the research, told The Huffington Post.

Residents will receive 12,000 yuan ($2,575) in subsidies for their troubles, with some getting extra support for housing.

FAST, built at a cost of 1.2 billion yuan, will dwarf the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico as the world's largest radio telescope, which is some 300 metres in diameter.

Wu Xiangping, director-general of the Chinese Astronomical Society, said the telescope's high level of sensitivity "will help us to search for intelligent life outside of the galaxy".

America Keeps Telling Canada That Polar Bears Are Going Extinct; Canada Disagrees

Green groups and the American government are expected to lobby the global community to classify polar bears as a species threatened with extinction.

But Canada, home to sixty percent of the world's polar bears, is prepared to fight back. The indigenous populations in the Canadian Arctic say the polar bear trade is vital for their communities, while the Canadian government says the global trade of the bear's fur continues to be sustainable.

Despite the fact that Washington is raising the alarm about the threat to the bears' population, proponents of the trade point out that the data doesn't show any serious emergency — in 2014, one of the 19 polar bear subpopulations in the Arctic was growing, three were in decline and six were stable, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Data was unavailable on the remaining nine.

Air Pollution Kills 5.5 Million People a Year — Over Half of Them in China, India

Air pollution caused more than 5.5 million premature deaths in 2013, with more than half of those occurring in China and India, according to a new study, and pollution mortalities are expected to continue rising.

Researchers found that poor air quality in China and India — the world's fastest growing economies — killed 1.6 million and 1.4 million people in those nations, respectively. Emissions from power plants, automobiles, industrial manufacturing, and inefficient heating systems and stoves have become a leading cause of death and disease worldwide, even as air pollution has decreased in high-income countries.

"Air pollution ranks fourth globally as a risk factor for death in the world," Michael Brauer, a public health researcher at the University of British Columbia, said. "It's one of the big ones."

The plant life of Australia's outback may have "given up", according to satellite-based maps tracking the impact of changing climatic conditions, such as rainfall and temperature, on the world's ecosystems.

The study suggests the vegetation of our interior does not respond to sudden increases in rainfall because it has "learned" that drought will soon follow.

Water Scarcity Crisis Even Worse than Previously Thought
February 15, 2016 // 06:00 AM EST

When the World Economic Forum, a Swiss non-profit dedicated to “improving the state of the world,” released its annual Global Risks Report last year it cited “water crises” as the number one global risk in terms of impact. This is significant because for the past 8 years, the number one global risk in terms of impact had been financial in nature (either asset price collapse, fiscal crises, or major systemic financial failure), but 2015 was the first year that saw a climate related issue top the list of risks.

Citing “water crises” as the number one global risk ahead of “rapid and massive spread of infectious diseases” and “weapons of mass destruction” certainly speaks volumes about the magnitude of the problem, but figuring out a way to reliably quantify the extent of the crisis remained elusive at the time of the WEF’s report. Yet as a new study published Friday in Science Advances details, researchers from the Twente Water Center at the University of Twente in the Netherlands found a more accurate way to quantify the extent of the global water scarcity problem.

According to the results of the Twente study, the water scarcity crisis is significantly worse than previously assumed.

OPINION & ANALYSIS

There's a Pointless War Being Waged on Killer Robots From the Future

We're all going to die at the hands of our killer robot overlords. Or, at least, we would die if not for the brave work of the aptly named Campaign to Stop Killer Robots, a non-profit that works "to preemptively ban fully autonomous weapons" (a.k.a. killer robots).

Killer robots and the need to stop them was also a hot topic at the recent Munich Security Conference, which brought together various politicians, bureaucrats, and wonks — along with their affiliated groupies and flunkies — to chat over expense-account cocktails about how things are going straight to hell. One panel in particular, "The Future of Warfare: Race with the Machines," explored the various ways killer robots would be bad and how humanity should stop them from ever being built in the first place.

There's just one problem: There's no logical, possible way to get from the here and now to the dark imagined future of weaponized artificial intelligence (AI).

Solar-Powered Vacuum Could Suck Up 24,000 Tons of Ocean Plastic Every Year
Lorraine Chow | February 19, 2016 10:08 am | Comments

With more plastic than fish expected in our oceans by 2050, cleaning up this mess seems like an impossible task. But a team of inventors from Sussex, England have developed a novel solution. The SeaVax is a solar- and wind-powered ship that can suck up plastic waste.

CNfxES2WcAAiVXU.jpg

The inventors at Bluebird Marine Systems LTD unveiled their proof of concept at the government-funded Innovate UK show in London in November. The inventors are entering prototype phase, theExpress reported.

The ship purportedly works by funneling plastic waste as it moves forward. According to this mockup posted to the Innovate UK website, once built, the vessel will be around 144 feet long and fully autonomous. Deck-mounted solar panels and two wind turbines will feed power to electric pumps and filters that can suck up plastic solids and micro plastics. An onboard shredder rips and breaks up larger pieces of debris.

The builders calculated on their website that the finished robovac will be able to generate enough energy to treat an average of 89.9 million liters of seawater in a year, translating to 22,400,000 kilograms of plastic from a body of water that has high concentrations of surface solid plastic, such as river estuaries.

“Working in a fleet, these autonomous robotic boats could keep plastic buildup contained and significantly reduce the existing ocean gyres in around 5-10 years, cost effectively,” the inventors said.

With hurricanes and typhoons becoming more intense, we wanted to find out why. What’s going on and what’s the difference between a hurricane and a typhoon in the first place? What kind of damage do these storms cause? And what role does climate change play?

Meteorologically speaking, hurricanes and typhoons are largely one in the same phenomenon, but are given different names depending where in the world they occur.
We answer these questions and more below in our list of most frequently asked questions about hurricanes and typhoons, along with a closer look at how these storms affect the Philippines in particular.

The Pentagon Is Betting Big on Space Warfare — Against China and Russia
By Greg Walters

February 13, 2016 | 7:15 am

'Space was seen as a sanctuary. New and emerging threats make clear that that's not the case anymore.'
In the budget proposal, published Tuesday, the Defense Department alsorequested $1.8 billion in funding for space launch activities, as well as hundreds of millions for research into "space technology" and things like "counterspace systems." Congress had last year already authorized an additional $5 billion for Pentagon space programs through 2020.

There's a good reason why Washington is pouring that kind of money into space.

"The US, Russia, and China are engaged in an arms race in space," explained Peter W. Singer, a senior fellow at the New America Foundation in Washington, DC who specializes in 21st Century security issues. "Ash Carter isn't just announcing billions of dollars of spending in space because he saw the new Force Awakens movie."

Apple Issues Largest Ever Green Bond by U.S. Company
Lorraine Chow | February 19, 2016 12:07 pm | Comments

As part of its ongoing efforts to minimize its environmental footprint, Apple has issued $1.5 billion in bonds that will financesustainable business projects. This is the largest ever “green bond” issued by a U.S. corporation.

On Earth Day 2014, a green leaf adorned the Apple logo at the company’s Fifth Avenue store in Midtown Manhattan. The store is one of at least 120 Apple stores powered by renewable energy.
The bond—rated Aa1 (or high quality and very low credit risk) by bond rating agency Moodys—pays 2.85 percent over seven years, Sustainable Business noted. The bond is part of an overall package of $10-$12 billion worth of new bonds Apple is selling.

For the uninitiated, this green bond means Apple is specifically raising money from investors to spend on environmentally friendly projects. As any debt instrument goes, Apple will pay investors back with interest. Here is where the funds will go, according to the bond’s prospectus:

Labor unions, environmental organizations and community, internet freedom and racial justice groups delivered more than 1,000 signatures from Rep. Diana DeGette’s constituents Wednesday urging her to reject the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

The TPP is a trade deal negotiated in secret for years by 12 countries, including the U.S. On Feb. 4, the U.S. and the leaders of the 11 other countriessigned the text of the pact. Now a Congressional vote to confirm the deal is imminent. If passed, the TPP will trump commonsense protections for workers, the environment, public health and food safety.

[Update: Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil’s southernmost state, suspended the use of the pyriproxyfen—a pesticide that stops the development of mosquito larvae in drinking tanks—to combat the spread of the Zika virus. Read more here.]

As the Zika epidemic “spreads explosively” around the world, pregnant travelers have been put on pause due to the virus’s suspected association with microcephaly, the congenital condition in which a baby’s head is abnormally small.

While the link between the mosquito-borne virus and microcephaly has yet to be scientifically proven, Argentinian and Brazilian doctors have suggested an alternate culprit: pesticides.

Interactive Map Shows Where Monsanto’s Roundup Is Sprayed in New York City
Reverend Billy & The Stop Shopping Choir | February 16, 2016 2:03 pm |Co
New York City residents can now find out if Monsanto’s Roundup is sprayed on their corners, parks, playgrounds and picnic areas.

The interactive map below will be presented to Mitchell J. Silver, commissioner of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation at a meeting Tuesday by the the Black Institute, Reverend Billy and The Stop Shopping Choir, Stop The Spray and other members of the Coalition Against Poison Parks. The groups will demand an end to the use of Roundup and glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, in New York City and full public disclosure.

The groups are pursuing legal options to force the city to reveal all locations where glyphosate is sprayed. According to the Pesticide Use by New York City Agencies in 2014, published in May 2015, New York City applied glyphosate 2,748 times. Through a Freedom of Information Law request, the city has revealed only 2,000 locations of glyphosate in 2014. Data from Central Park and other areas managed by non-profit conservancies has not been shared with the public.

Did you hear about the time 22 flights were cancelled at London's Heathrow Airport because there was a polar bear on the runway? No? Well he was arrested and now faces up to three months in jail.

But this wasn't some sort of zoo escape that went very weirdly wrong — it was a direct action protest last summer that will see 13 people sentenced by a London court on Wednesday. The group has been told to expect jail time, a severity of punishment that has shocked many in the legal profession.

The thirteen are all members of Plane Stupid, activists who opposes the expansion of the airport — already one of the world's busiest — due to concerns over climate change. After getting onto the runway by cutting through the airport's perimeter fence in the early hours of July 13, the group chained themselves together and sat in a circle around the man who had dressed up as the North Pole's most famous beast.

NASA: 4 Billion People at Risk as ‘Water Table Dropping All Over the World’
Andrea Germanos, Common Dreams | February 15, 2016 10:06 am |Comments
A new analysis reveals that global water scarcity is a far greater problem than previously thought, affecting 4 billion people—two-thirds of the world’s population—and will be “one of the most difficult and important challenges of this century.”

Previous analyses looked at water scarcity at an annual scale and had found that water scarcity affected between 1.7 and 3.1 billion people. The new study, published Friday in the journal Science Advances, assessed water scarcity on a monthly basis, more fully capturing the specific times of year when it could be an issue.

“Water scarcity has become a global problem affecting us all,” stated study co-author Arjen Hoekstra. Photo credit: Oxfam International / Flickr
“Water scarcity has become a global problem affecting us all,” study co-author Arjen Hoekstra, a professor of water management at the University of Twente in the Netherlands, said.

The study found that almost half of the 4 billion affected by severe water scarcity for a month or more are in India and China. Millions of others affected live in Bangladesh, Nigeria, Pakistan and Mexico.

The U.S. is far from immune to the problem, with 130 million people affected by water scarcity for at least one month a year, mostly in the states of Texas, California and Florida. And among the rivers the study notes that are fully or nearly depleted before reaching their end is the Colorado River in the West.

Sea Levels Rising at Fastest Rate in 3,000 Years
Tim Radford, Climate News Network | February 23, 2016 9:30 am |Comments
Sea levels in the 20th century rose faster than at any time in the last 3,000 years. And in the 21st century, the tides will climb ever higher—by at least 28 cms (11 inches) and possibly by as much as 130 cms (51 inches), according to two new studies.

Human activity is implicated in both studies and although neither delivers a new conclusion, each represents a new approach to studies of sea level rise as a consequence of climate change and each is a confirmation of previous research.

Most literate people, other than the dumb-assed, anti-science Climate Change 'Deniers', are aware that the decline of Polar Bear populations are a major indicator of what is currently happening with the reality of the ice melt in the Arctic... But, did you know this about their history?... Interesting! :

Humpback Whale Entangled in Illegal Gillnet Saved by Sea Shepherd Crew

Sea Shepherd crew rescued a whale entangled in an illegal totoaba gillnet in the Gulf of California.
Our goal is to save the vaquita porpoises, the most endangered marine mammal.
The vaquita are caught as a result of fishing the totoaba, a fish poached for its swim bladder.
Both the vaquita and the totoaba are endangered species and protected by law.
Both species live only in the Gulf of California.

The crew of Sea Shepherd‘s research vessel R/V Martin Sheen spotted last week a humpback whale entangled in a gillnet in the Vaquita Refuge in the Gulf of California in Baja California, Mexico. While Captain Oona Layolle, campaign leader and captain of the M/V Farley Mowat, notified the Mexican Navy and the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA), the crew began the rescue operation. The whale was estimated to be 35 feet long and crews from both vessels worked to free the whale by cutting the gillnet off the whale’s head and torso.

Australian climate zones move significantly since 2000

Posted about an hour ago

PHOTO: Australia's seasonal rainfall zones have changed, according to rainfall data from 2000 to 2015. (AEGIC )

MAP: Geraldton 6530
\
e maps show regions with a Mediterranean climate and winter dominant rainfall contracting in a south-westerly direction.

Summer dominant and neutral rainfall zones expanded south.

Dr Stephens said the changes appeared to be related to barometric pressure, sea surface temperature and altered upper level westerly winds.

"In the mid '70s there was a weakening of the Indian Ocean trough to the west of Perth that appears to be related to a decline in winter rainfall since then," he said.

"In addition sea surface temperatures have warmed in all season which is beneficial for summer rainfall."

AEGIC's analysis shows that climate variability in some parts of the southwest of Western Australia has actually reduced due to the loss of wet years.

Dr Stephens said the climate had settled into a new pattern and Australian farmers should factor this into their practice.

"I think it would be a little bit naive to be basing your management on climate prior to 2000 it is just a different climate," he said.

Why Hydropower Is Not ‘Cheap’ or ‘Clean’
Gary Wockner | February 23, 2016 12:29 pm | Comments

e California think-tank Pacific Institute released a report—Impacts of California’s Drought: Hydroelectric Generation 2015 Updateearlier this month that contains significant false and misleading information that could negatively impact California rivers and delay the transition away from dirty energy.

First, the report and the news stories surrounding it repeatedly say that hydroelectric power is “less expensive” in California than competing sources. This statement gives credence to the anti-environmental mindset of discounting the negative impacts that dams and reservoirs have on free-flowing rivers, and disregards the externalized costs to the environment. In fact, the report omits the devastating impacts hydropower has on fish, wildlife, wetlands and countless other species that depend on healthy flowing rivers for survival. If the report would have included an “environmental full-cost accounting,” the cost of hydropower for California consumers would have been shown to be huge.

Seattle-Area Salmon Are Loaded With Anti-Depressants and Other Drugs Thanks to Human Waste
By Elaisha Stokes

February 25, 2016 | 12:10 pm
The everyday chemicals that humans ingest to relieve pain, fight depression and diabetes, or treat infection are winding up in the tissue of fish in Washington's Puget Sound.

A study in the journal Environmental Pollution detected unusually high levels of drugs like Advil, Benadryl, Prozac, and even birth control pills, in the tissue of salmon.

The culprit, according to the study, is human waste.

"About 45 of the 150 chemicals we examined were found in the fish," said James Meador, the lead author of the study and an aquatic toxicologist working with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. "Some of them were at high concentrations. That's the kind of information that raises eyebrows."

Over 4,000 pharmaceuticals are currently in use or in development in the United States. Many of them are finding their way into rivers, streams, and lakes, raising concerns about how exposure could impact wildlife, or even humans who consume fish.

The Biggest Oil Leak You’ve Never Heard Of, Still Leaking After 12 Years
Tim Donaghy, Greenpeace | February 23, 2016 3:57 pm | Comments

Far away from TV cameras and under the radar of the nightly news, oil has been continuously leaking from a damaged production platform located just 12 miles off the coast of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico—causing an oily sheens on the surface that stretch for miles and are visible from space.

The Risks of Offshore Oil Production

These underwater oil wells have been leaking since 2004 andcontinue to leak as you read this. Unless it is plugged, the government estimates the leak might continue for 100 years until the oil in the underground reservoir is finally depleted.

The platform’s owner, Taylor Energy, has no plans to stop the leak and is lobbying behind the scenes for permission to walk away from its mess.

David Suzuki: We Must Save the Honeybees and Here’s How You Can Help

Many environmental campaigns over the past 50 years have aimed at getting people to care for imperiled species in wild, far-off places. The focus in Canada has often been on large, photogenic, culturally important animals, with bonus points for campaigns that include alliteration, bumper sticker-friendly slogans and plush toys. This has been a sensible and often successful strategy.

About a decade ago, beekeepers in Europe and North America started noticing serious declines in honeybee populations.

Severe thunderstorm warning as heavy rains hit North Island

Last updated 23:58, February 27 2016

Power outage leaves 1000 homes in dark in Aucklan

  • Shortly before midnight 960 households remained without power.

Lines company Vector estimated they would have power restored by Sunday morning.

MetService said there was a risk of severe thunderstorms in southwestern Northland, Auckland, southern Coromandel, Waikato, Waitomo, northern Taumarunui, northern Taupo, Bay of Plenty and Rotorua on Saturday night through until Sunday morning.

MetService's rain radar showed heavy falls hitting the New Plymouth area and moving inland towards Whanganui National Park.

Thunderstorms were forecast to hit parts of Waitomo, Taumarunui, western Taupo and northern Taranaki on Saturday night or early Sunday.

    www.stuff.co.nz: Severe storm warning
MetService said the rainfall in those areas could include bursts of 25 to 40mm per hour.

A severe weather watch was in place for Auckland, Waikato, Waitomo, Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty, Taihape, Taumarunui, Taupo and Taranaki.

The sodden weather has been brought by a very moist tropical air mass moving onto the North Island from the northwest.

It created a particularly muggy feel across Auckland, meteorologist Emma Blades said.

"Overnight the temperature won't drop to below 20 degrees so it's going to be a really, really sticky night," she said.

"It's unusually muggy for February to see these levels of moisture."

There was still uncertainty regarding the timing and exact location of severe outbursts.

However, there was a risk that rainfall amounts could be greater than 50mm within six hours, especially in north Taranaki, Waitomo and Taumarunui.

Localised downpours could also cause surface flooding from Waikato to North Taranaki.

Coromandel and eastern Bay of Plenty were more likely to see heavy rainfalls on Sunday.

People in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather and listen for possible weather warnings, MetService warned.
