Global warming?

Such a bad bad time for the planet....

....in the four months since that historic pact was negotiated in Paris, a drumbeat of grim scientific findings has underscored that staving off the worst consequences of global warming may take far more aggressive actions.

The first three months of 2016 were the warmest on record in 136 years — by large margins. The massive Greenland ice sheet has melted this spring to an extent that scientists say they’ve never seen this early. New research suggested that if high levels of emissions continue unabated, sea levels could rise by nearly twice as much as expected by the end of this century. A global coral bleaching event fueled by warm seas is turning some once-majestic reefs into ghostly underwater graveyards.

The list goes on and on.

www.washingtonpost.com: How Earth itself has dramatically upped the stakes for the Paris climate accord
But the only urgent concern is not how to save it but to juice the engine that's destroying it.

Yeah te sky is falling. The first time I have heard of thise apocalyptic scenarios I was 7 yo. They showed a documentary on the greenhouse effect and told that if things wouldn't change fast, for the year 2000 there would have been the end of the world. It was 39 years ago. In the meanwhile the c02 emissions have increased about 5-folds I guess. Nothing happened. Nothing incredible is happening either. The AGW alarmists are like religious prophets under every aspect.

personally think its always been pointless/ridiculous that any person predits/sets a date for the demise of the planet, just as silly to believe such, or have such insstilled in a person of any age, by adults i assume

2016 on track to be hottest year on record

It's a well-known fact the global temperature is rising, but the rate in which the process is happening has even caught some scientists off guard.

It turns out last March was the hottest in 137 years of record keeping, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says. According to its data, the record high is the 11th straight month to establish a new record -- and it sets up 2016 to also break records.

Scientists Start to Look at Ground Beneath Their Feet for Solution to Climate Change
Tim Radford, Climate News Network | April 17, 2016 9:50 am | Comments

Climate scientists anxious to find ways to limit atmospheric greenhouse gases have started to look at the ground beneath their feet.

Four-fifths of annual emissions from fossil fuel combustion could be retained by soil.
Photo credit: Ron Nichols/NRCS / Flickr
They calculate that although the world’s soils already hold 2.4 trillion tonnes of gases in the form of organic carbon, there’s room for more.

Scientists from the U.S. and Scotland report in Nature journal that with a few changes to agricultural practice, there would be room for another 8 billion tonnes.

China is releasing waters from dams in an attempt to ease the pain from a long-lasting drought that has affected areas up and down the Mekong River, which stretches from western China to Vietnam.

But at the famous Mekong Delta, where the river meets the sea in south Vietnam, the extra waters don't seem to be helping much, as the area contends with its worst drought in 90 years.

4 Million People Die Each Year Inhaling Black Carbon
Jeremy Deaton, Climate Nexus | April 8, 2016 11:56 am | Comments
One of global warming’s biggest culprits is lurking in the most unlikely of places. Black carbon from household stoves is fuelingclimate change and degrading public health and the issue has spurred a wave of investment in novel alternatives to solid fuel cookstoves.

Millions of women in developing countries cook on stoves heated by burning wood, charcoal, crops and dung. Soot from these stoves collects in homes and in the atmosphere as black carbon, a potent greenhouse gas second only to CO2 in its ability to trap heat. But unlike CO2, which is harmless if inhaled, black carbon contains carcinogens that can enter the bloodstream and wreak havoc on vital organs.

Smoke from cookstoves claims roughly 4 million lives each year, more than malaria, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis combined. Women and children stand at greatest risk. Photo credit: Pixbay
“Having an open fire in your kitchen is like burning 400 cigarettes an hour,” Kirk Smith, professor of environmental health at UC Berkeley told the World Health Organization. Which Countries Won’t Be Signing the Paris Climate Deal on Earth Day?
Will Yeates, DeSmogBlog | April 21, 2016 9:21 am | Comments

An unprecedented number of countries will be gathering in New York City tomorrow to sign the Paris climate deal.

After significant progress was made this past December in agreeing the landmark deal, more than 167 countries—including past climate villains Iran, Canada and Australia and polluting giants China, the U.S. and the EU—are set to sign the Paris agreement on its opening day.

So while much focus has been on who will be signing the Paris Agreement on April 22, here we take a look at those that might not be. Photo credit: United Nations Photo / Flickr
But despite this, there are still some countries that remain absent from the UN’s official list of attendees—and this includes some prettybig emitters and fossil fuel producers.

Diet key to feeding the world in 2050 without further deforestation, modelling suggests
ABC Science

Enough food can be produced to feed the world population until at least 2050 without the need to further clear forests for farmland, according to new research.

Modelling published in Nature Communicationstoday indicates diet will be the key to striking a successful balance between future global food needs and conservation goals.

With a shift toward vegetarianism and lower meat consumption, even lower-yield organic farming techniques could be used to generate enough food for the burgeoning world population, according to researchers at the Institute of Social Ecology at the Alpen-Adra University in Vienna.

A whale watcher has captured spectacular footage of a pod of about 1,000 dolphins fleeing an ambush by orcas in waters off California.

Michael Sack, co-owner of Sanctuary Cruises, said there had been an "almost unprecedented" run of daily orca sightings in April.

This is like the most ignorant statement ever in a see of ignorant statements about global warming. I guarantee you when you were 7 there was no mention ever of the world ending in 200. That is total and utter BS...were there warnings of the dangers of global warming yes. Was the Ozone layer deteriorating at large levels..yes and there are atmospheric photos to prove it. No one is saying the world is ending tomorrow, just that it is a huge problem that is only getting worse..this isnt a liberal conspiracy...it is just that liberals tend to give a fucking shit about the environment. You know 9 out of 10 dentists recommend sugarless gum...it is you who are the idiot who believes the one that doesnt. To conservatives everything is a conspiracy...as they rape and pillage the planet and our resources. The only agenda to address global warming and mans impact on that is to address global warming

You may address your comprehension problems before calling other people ignorants. First I said 2000, not 200: 1977> 200. Beside, I haven't said that it would be because the global warming, but because the greenhouse effect. In case you didn't know, back there the anti-c02 alarmists were divided: some said too much c02 would cause too much warming, others said it would cause cooling. The sole thing they agreed was that the doomsday was imminent and the cause was c02.

Heree you are some examples:
“If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but 11 degrees colder by the year 2000,” claimed ecology professor Kenneth E.F. Watt at the University of California in 1970. “This is about twice what it would take to put us in an ice age.”

“By the year 2000 the United Kingdom will be simply a small group of impoverished islands, inhabited by some 70 million hungry people,” he claimed. “If I were a gambler, I would take even money that England will not exist in the year 2000 and give ten to one that the life of the average Briton would be of distinctly lower quality than it is today.”

“If what you’re saying about the greenhouse effect is true, is anything going to look different down there in 20 years?” He looked for a while and was quiet and didn’t say anything for a couple seconds. Then he said, “Well, there will be more traffic.” I, of course, didn’t think he heard the question right. Then he explained, “The West Side Highway [which runs along the Hudson River] will be under water. And there will be tape across the windows across the street because of high winds. And the same birds won’t be there. The trees in the median strip will change.” Then he said, “There will be more police cars.” Why? “Well, you know what happens to crime when the heat goes up.”
'He' was James Hansen, in 1988, former head of NASA and 1988 Congressional testimony on climate change. Guess what? This year he has published again pretty identical predictions, just shifting the apocalypse in 2100:

More BS from the left.

The science isn't BS. We know exactly which infrared frequencies resonate with and are absorbed by the CO2 molecule. We know how many billion tons of CO2 we put in the atmosphere each year burning fossil fuels. We know how much of this CO2 the ocean is absorbing and how much is remaining in the atmosphere. We know how much energy (heat) each CO2 molecule absorbs. We know how many CO2 molecules there are in the atmosphere. We plug in the numbers and calculate how much warmer the atmosphere is overall. Atmospheric warming by release of CO2 is an irrefutable fact of physics.

The problem is that AGW is not science. It is religion.

entire nations could be wiped off the face of the earth by rising sea levels if global warming is not reversed by the year 2000. Coastal flooding and crop failures would create an exodus of "eco-refugees," threatening political chaos, said Brown, director of the New York office of the U.N. Environment Program. He said governments have a 10-year window of opportunity to solve the greenhouse effect - Associated Press June 30, 1989

They always know everything, but theirs predictions are always wrong. Strange uh? How comes that some of the brightest scientific minds on earth are AGW skeptcis?

“Global warming really has become a new religion”–Nobel Physicist Ivar Giaever

July 9, 2015 By E. Calvin BeisnerLeave a Comment

Ivar Giaever explains in this video lecture why he rejects global warming alarming. “It’s ridiculous,” he says, to think we can measure global average temperature (GAT) accurately, and that we should consider an increase in GAT from ~1880 to 2015 from ~288 degrees Kelvin to ~288.8 degrees Kelvin (an increase of only 0.3%) frightening. There’s much more in this brilliant lecture.

But who cares what he thinks? He’s just a Nobel Prize-winning physicist.

Scientists Share Why Keeping Warming Under 1.5 Degrees Celsius Is Crucial

Alex Kirby, Climate News Network | April 22, 2016 10:08 am | Comments
With the possible prospect of the world warming dangerously and uncontrollably, half of one degree Celsius may sound like a negligible temperature change unlikely to make much difference to life on Earth.

But scientists say 0.5 C could make a crucial difference in some regions—particularly in developing countries in the tropics—that are already at great risk from climate change. The consequences could include higher sea level rise and extended heatwaves, threatening most tropical coral reefs.

Bill Hare, CEO of Climate Analytics and a member of the research team that has produced the cautionary report, said: “Our study shows that tropical regions—mostly developing countries that are already highly vulnerable to climate change—face the biggest rise in impacts between 1.5 C and 2 C.

How will the Northwest passage influence global trade and economy?

Global warming maybe the bad boy when it comes to rising sea levels, extreme weather and killing arctic animals.
But while the environment suffers, the shipping industry sees a massive new opportunity.
The melting ice is opening up a new trade route through the Arctic Ocean, which China and other countries are planning to profit from.
The newly navigable Northwest Passage connects the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic

So much methane gas is now bubbling up through the Condamine River in Queensland, Australia that it exploded with fire and held a large flame. Gas seeping into the river began shortly after coal seam gas operations started nearby and is growing in volume and the stretch of river affected is expanding in length.

Gas first started bubbling though the river shortly after the coal seam gas industry took off in the Chinchilla area. Since then the volume of gas bubbling through the river has massively increased and has spread along the river.

Vernal pools are shallow depressional wetlands that appear seasonally in meadows and woodlands and serve as important breeding grounds for amphibians like frogs. The seasonal wetlands and pools of the prairie pothole region are also vernal pools. Memorialized in Robert Frost’s Spring Pools, these unique wetlands usually collect water in the winter and spring and typically dry up by the end of summer.
