Nebraska Farmers Sue Monsanto Alleging Roundup Gave Them Cancer
Four Nebraskan agricultural workers have filed a lawsuit againstMonsanto Co. alleging that the agribusiness giant’s cancer-linkedproduct, Roundup, gave them non-Hodgkin lymphoma after many years of exposure.

The plaintiffs have also accused Monsanto of purposely misleading consumers about the safety of its blockbuster product, which contains glyphosate as its controversial main ingredient.

Monsanto rejects $62bn bid from Bayer

GMO giant Monsanto rejected an unsolicited $62 billion takeover bid by German pharmaceutical giant Bayer, saying the price was too low but adding that it remained “open to further talks.”
Monsanto can “see the logic” of combining with the German corporation, and believes the merger could get the required approval from regulators, sources familiar with the talks told Reuters. However, the St. Louis, Missouri-based company believes its shareholders deserve a better offer.

Thousands of Tiny Red Crabs Wash Up on California Coastlines
Katie Pohlman | May 20, 2016 2:50 pm | Comments

Thousands of red crabs are covering parts of California’s coastline. But this isn’t the first time.

Masses of pelagicred crab, also known as tuna crab, have been washing up on California’s beaches for the last 15 years, reported NBC News. However, every year, the event draws major attention from tourists and residents alike. This year, the crabs are washing up on beaches in Orange County and San Diego.

Despite the name, red crabs are a species of lobster that normally resides off Mexico’s western shore, typically moving no farther north than San Diego. But for the past several years, the 1- to 3-inch red crabs have populated waters farther up the coast in California, Reuters reported, and they won’t be leaving anytime soon.

This is largely due to El Niño. As the National Aeronautics and

New Undersea Turbines Harness Enormous Power From Local Tides
Paul Brown, Climate News Network | May 17, 2016 9:35 am | Comments

Two countries with the highest tides in the world, Canada and the UK, both claim to be the world leaders in creating electricity from the tides.

They are among a group of coastal states—including China, South Korea, the U.S. and Australia—that are hoping to harness the enormous power of their local twice-daily tides to tap a new and reliable supply of electricity.

Burning All Fossil Fuels Would Lead to a 17 C Rise in Arctic Temperatures
Roz Pidcock, Carbon Brief | May 24, 2016 10:22 am | Comments
Burning all the fossil fuels we know to exist on Earth could push global temperature an average of 8 C above preindustrial levels, according to new research. The Arctic would bear the brunt of the warming, with temperatures potentially rising 17 C, said the authors.

Tens of Thousands Take Part in Global Actions Targeting World’s Most Dangerous Fossil Fuel Projects
350.org | May 16, 2016 9:28 am | Comments
Twelve days of unprecedented worldwide action against fossil fuels concluded Sunday showing that the climate movement will not rest until all coal, oil and gas is kept in the ground. The combined global efforts of activists on six continents now pose a serious threat to the future of the fossil fuel industry, already weakened by financial and political uncertainty.

Tens of thousands of activists took to the streets, occupied mines, blocked rail lines, linked arms, paddled in kayaks and held community meetings in 13 countries, pushing the boundaries of conventional protest to find new ways to demand coal, oil and gas stay in the ground. Participants risked arrest—many for the first time—to say that it’s time to Break Free from the current energy paradigm that is locking the planet into a future of catastrophicclimate change.

10 Near Misses at U.S. Nuclear Power Plants Considered Precursors to a Meltdown
Greenpeace | May 24, 2016 10:34 am | Comments
Following the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, Greenpeace USA released a new report Tuesday on the 166 near misses at U.S. nuclear power plants over the past decade. Of the incidents identified in Nuclear Near Misses: A Decade of Accident Precursors at U.S. Nuclear Plants, 10 are considered by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to be important precursors to a meltdown.

“Contrary to NRC commissioners’ claims, there is nothing safe about the nuclear reactors in the United States,” Greenpeace Nuclear Policy Analyst Jim Riccio said. “Thirty years after Chernobyl and five years after Fukushima, it is clear that these kinds of disasters could absolutely happen here. It is time for the NRC to listen to the whistleblowers within its own ranks and address these longstanding issues and vulnerabilities.”

More Big Retailers Say ‘No’ to GMO Salmon
Friends of the Earth | May 25, 2016 10:49 am | Comments
On the heels of Canada’s approval of GMO salmon, Friends of the Earth U.S. and a coalition of more than 30 consumer, health, food safety and fishing groups released updated numbers Wednesday showing that nearly 80 major food retailers have committed to not sell genetically engineered salmon, despite FDA’s approval last November.

Nearly 80 major food retailers have committed to not sell genetically engineered salmon.
“Despite irresponsible approvals, the growing number of commitments from retailers demonstrates there is no market forGMO salmon,” Dana Perls, senior food and technology campaigner with Friends of the Earth, said. “Retailers and restaurants are wisely listening to their customers and rejecting GMO salmon.”

Frequency and Intensity of Wildfires Across the Globe Fueled by Climate Change
Climate Nexus | May 11, 2016 10:11 am | Comments

The widely destructive wildfire in Alberta has raised concerns about the frequency and intensity of wildfires across the globe fueled byclimate change. Scientists have warned that along with factors such as changing land-use and firefighting methods that leave more trees and bush to burn, rising temperatures have stood out as a reason.
Photo credit: Delta Fire Department Twitter
Worldwide, from 1979 to 2013, the length of fire season has increased nearly 19 percent. In the U.S., the 10-year average number of acres burned in wildfires has more than doubled from the mid-1980s to 7 million acres now. The fragile boreal forests that encircle the Northern Hemisphere and represent a third of Earth’s forest land are at high risk of wildfires but do not get the same level of attention as tropical fore

When the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently released and then abruptly withdrew a draft document on the cancer risks posed by the pesticide glyphosate, Monsanto jumped at the chance to say that its signature chemical had been exonerated.

Monsanto Faces Rejection in U.S. Over GMO Soybean
MintPress News | May 11, 2016 8:35 am | Comments

Monsanto, the controversial biotech seed giant, keeps running into trouble on the lucrative GMO soybean market this year.

Although 94 percent of U.S. soybean crops come from genetically modified seeds, Monsanto’s latest offering isn’t meeting with the approval of grain traders in the U.S. Called “Roundup Ready 2 Xtend,” the Wall Street Journal reported on May 2 that major grain corporations like Archer Daniels Midland Co. and Cargill Inc. are rejecting the soybean because it lacks important regulatory approval in the European Union and could disrupt international trade.

The True Cost of Fracking

Arsenic. Cadmium. Chromium. Radon. Lead. These are just a few of the toxins used in hydraulic fracturing, commonly known asfracking, a controversial drilling process to retrieve oil and natural gas from shale deposits under the surface of the Earth.

Concerns about the process have been mounting, as studies have linked it to a host of environmental and public health problems, fromincreased infant mortality and low birth weight babies to the release of cancer-causing radioactive gas, contamination of drinking water and earthquakes. Fracking also releases methane, which is a far more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.

10 Popular Dive Sites Closed in Thailand Due to Coral Bleaching Crisis
Katie Pohlman | May 27, 2016 1:28 pm | Comments
Some of Thailand’s most prized dive sites have been closed indefinitely after the Department of National Parks’ survey foundcoral bleaching on 80 percent of some of the reefs.

This is a bold move for a country where tourism accounts for 10 percent of its economy—and where officials were hoping to attract 32 million tourists this year, The Guardian reported. But then again, it sends the message Thailand officials want: Ignorant tourism is killing the reefs.

Fracked Gas Isn’t Green or Clean
Wenonah Hauter | May 25, 2016 12:17 pm | Comments
hen Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo signed on to the Governors’ Accord for a New Energy Future in February, she touted the state’s investment inrenewable energy and green jobs. And, she made clear this was just a start: “More work remains and this accord acknowledges the challenges we face and our commitment to addressing them.”

Indeed, more work remains for the governor to provide climate leadership for Rhode Island and the nation. At the very top of the list should be rescinding her support for a controversial fracked gas project in the town of Burrillville.

Rooftop Solar Provides Net Benefits to All Nevadans

Noah Long, Natural Resources Defense Council | May 26, 2016 12:37 pm |Comments
The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and SolarCity have published a new analysis on costs and benefits of rooftop solarenergy in Nevada that shows it’s benefitting all utility customers in the state and benefits could significantly increase under good solar policies.

The results of the paper, coauthored by NRDC’s Dylan Sullivan, show that Nevada customers are already receiving $7 million – $14 million in net benefits per year from rooftop solar generation across the state—which amounts to 1.6 cents to 3.4 cents in benefits from every net-metered kilowatt-hour—whether they have solar photovoltaic panels on their roofs or not.

Great Barrier Reef: Shorten pledges $500m as surveys reveal mass coral die-offs
By Naomi Woodley, staff
Updated about 6 hours ago

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has been in Cairns todayannouncing a $500-million fund to help protect the Great Barrier Reef.

It's not all new money - $123 million had already been allocated by the Coalition - but it is a significant cash splash.

We've taken a look at the latest news on the reef - including coral bleaching, UNESCO reports and its management - and put it all in one place.

Big Oil Abandons the Arctic, Obama Under Pressure to Do More to Protect the Region

Andy Rowell, Oil Change International | May 12, 2016 10:02 am | Comments
Sometimes it is hard to find good news on the climate. Take a quick look at a couple of today’s stories:

According to Australian researchers, five tiny Pacific islands, which are part of the Solomon islands, have completely disappeared due torising sea levels, in what is being described as the “first scientific confirmation of the impact of climate change on coastlines in the Pacific.” Another six islands have had large swathes of land washed into the sea too.

Elsewhere, one in five of the world’s plant species is said to be threatened with extinction, with climate change one of the factors along with farming and construction.

Monsanto Ordered to Pay $46.5 Million in PCB Lawsuit in Rare Win for Plaintiffs

Lorraine Chow | May 26, 2016 11:32 am | Comments
A St. Louis jury has awarded three plaintiffs a total of $46.5 million in damages in a lawsuit alleging that Monsanto and three other companies were negligent in its handling of polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, a highly toxic and carcinogenic group of chemicals.

‘Mistaken’ Release of Glyphosate Report Raises Questions Over EPA’s Ties to Monsanto

Lorraine Chow | May 9, 2016 12:03 pm | Comments
The House Science, Space and Technology Committee is questioning why the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) posted and then suddenly pulled its highly anticipated risk assessment ofglyphosate, the main ingredient in weedkillers such as Monsanto’s flagship herbicide Roundup.

\

Sources told Sustainable Pulse that the EPA allegedly attempted “to take the legal pressure off the pesticide industry and specifically large producers of glyphosate-based herbicides such as Monsanto,” by releasing the Cancer Assessment Review Committee draft report.
On April 29, the EPA’s Cancer Assessment Review Committee published a report online about glyphosate concluding that the chemical is not likely carcinogenic to humans. However, even though it was marked “Final” and was signed by 13 members of CARC, the report disappeared from the website three days later.

Renewable Energy Surges to Record-Breaking Levels Around the World
Andy Rowell, Oil Change International | June 1, 2016 9:17 am | Comment
The renewable revolution is gathering apace according to new research. Last year was an “extraordinary” record year for the sector, with “the largest global capacity additions seen to date.”

An estimated 147 gigawatts of renewable power capacity was added in 2015, according to the annual report of REN21, the renewables policy organization made up of energy experts, NGOs and governments, which is based in Paris.

In total, new installations of renewable power generation capacity rose to 1,848.5 GW globally in 2015, underlying the fact I made in yesterday’s blog that Big Oil’s demise might come sooner rather than later, in part due to the renewable revolution.

This One Chart Says It All for the Future of Solar Energy
John Rogers, Union of Concerned Scientists | June 1, 2016 10:27 am |Comments

A friend and former colleague—my business partner from when I worked in solar—recently shared a graph showing the drop in the prices of solar panels and the growth in worldwide installations of solar.

My buddy pointed out where prices stood at the beginning of the period shown in the graph, 40 years ago; what panels cost when he launched operations in one Latin American country 30 years ago; and where things were when he and I launched another operation a decade later. And he mentioned the incredibly low price he had paid, just the day before, for modules to feed one of those operations.

Feds Find Offshore Fracking in the Pacific Would Have No ‘Significant’ Environmental Impact

It found hydraulic fracking off the coast of California poses no “significant” environmental impact. The decision lifts a moratorium triggered earlier this year by a lawsuit from the Center for Biological Diversity. The group said it is considering other legal options to challenge the decision.

The Wikkelhouse, designed by Fiction Factory in Amsterdam, is built by snapping multiple 1.2 meter (4 feet) wide sections together. Each section is made by wrapping a basic house shape with curved edges in 24 layers of cardboard that are glued together. The sections are then finished with waterproof, breathable foil and covered with a layer of wood paneling for extra protection.

Are more of these guys going to be feeding on humans now that the world is getting hotter? Photo via YouTube

Every summer, our collective obsession with sharks fucking humans up rears its ugly head. Ever since Jaws dah-domped its way into our collective unconscious, society has gone into a mass freakout over "man-eating" sharks, which manifests in sensational reports of reports about vicious attacks, huge bite marks, and washed-up bodies in our televisions and news feeds. Recently, researchers suggested that climate change—with its ability to push people to cool off at the beach—is actually causing an increase in shark attacks in the United States, although the data can't say that definitively.

Glyphosate Found in Urine of 93 percent of Americans Tested
Organic Consumers Association | May 29, 2016 1:59 pm | Comments

Glyphosate, the most used herbicide in the world, has been found in the urine of 93 percent of the American public during a unique testing project that started in 2015.

Glyphosate, labeled a “probable human carcinogen” by the World Health Organization’s cancer agency IARC in 2015, has now been revealed to be ubiquitous in the first ever comprehensive and validated LC/MS/MS testing project to be carried out across America.

The European Union is currently in the process of putting restrictions on the use of glyphosate due to health concerns, with Member States so far unable to agree on the re-approval of the chemical beyond June 2016.

Glyphosate-containing herbicides are sold under trademarks such asMonsanto’s Roundup.

Farmers continue to debate the merits of genetically modified crops as Monsanto marks 20 years of GM in Australia

As chemical giant Monsanto marks 20 years of genetically modified crops in Australia, farmers remain divided about the merits of GM crops.

Cotton was the first GM crop to come to Australia in 1996, with canola varieties becoming commercially available in 2008.

Croplife Australia, the peak body for agricultural chemical and biotechnology sector, commissioned PG Economics to assess the impact of GM crops, with the report finding GM has generated $1.37 billion in extra income for growers.

David Suzuki: How to Feed the World as the Planet Warms
Dr. David Suzuki | May 25, 2016 9:16 am | Comments
Calculating farming’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions is difficult, but experts agree that feeding the world’s people has tremendous climate and environmental impacts. Estimates of global emissions from farms range widely. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency puts them at 24 percent, including deforestation, making agriculture the second-largest emitter after heat and electricity.

Some suggest finding better ways to feed as many as nine billion people by 2050 means rethinking our agricultural systems.
Agriculture contributes to global warming in a number of ways. Methane and nitrous oxide, which are more potent than CO2 but remain in the atmosphere for shorter times, make up about 65 percent of agricultural emissions. Methane comes mainly from cattle and nitrous oxide from fertilizers and wastes.

This Eco-Village Is Being Built From More Than 1 Million Recycled Plastic Bottles
Katie Pohlman | May 23, 2016 11:40 am | Comment
Recyclable plastic bottles now have a new purpose: to create homes.

The Plastic Bottle Village is a planned 83-acre community in Bocas Del Toro, Panama. The community will consist of 120 homes, all built with plastic bottles as the main component. The village’s creator Robert Bezeau said the idea came to him in a dream, according to the community’s website. One day he woke up and had a vision of what could be done with the more than 35 billion plastic bottles thrown away each year in the U.S. alone.

The project started in August 2015 with a model single-story two-bedroom house. More than 10,000 bottles were used in that single home, according to the village’s website. The village has already started to sell some of the houses in the community.

How Changing Livestock Feed Can Mitigate Climate Change
Lani Furbank, Food Tank | May 19, 2016 12:40 pm | Comments
It’s no secret that livestock production is a resource-intensive sector of agriculture that takes a heavy toll on the planet and significantly contributes to climate change.

According to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, the livestock sector is the single largest anthropogenic user of land. It uses approximately 30 percent of the land surface on the planet, is responsible for between 14 and 50 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, according to some estimates and accounts for more than 8 percent of human water use.

A recent

study shows that making changes to livestock feed could reduce environmental impacts. Photo credit: iStock

CSIRO Melbourne climate science labs look certain to close under restructure
The World Today
By Paddy Manning

Updated about 6 hours ago

The CSIRO is going ahead with a controversial restructure that will see between a third and a half of its climate scientists lose their jobs.

"The second reaction is, why would you actually make a change to high-quality work related to the climate change issue, right at a time when we are now realising we have a serious problem on our hands?"

Hardest-hit will be CSIRO's Aspendale laboratories in south-east Melbourne, which were set up after World War II to improve weather forecasting and have since gained an international reputation.

Most of western Pennsylvania, for example, has three more years before the cicadas take over its counties, CBS Pittsburgh reported.

Boeri is the visionary behind similar plant-covered structures, such as Bosco Verticale in Milan and The Tower of the Cedars in Lausanne, Switzerland that features trees and plants on every floor.

“It’s a symbol of restitution,” Boeri told TIME of the Mountain Forest Hotel that’s opening fall 2017. “Buildings have to take care of nature.”

6 Questions for Monsanto

Monsanto may not be the largest company in the world. Or the worst. But the St. Louis, Missouri, biotech giant has become the poster child for all that’s wrong with our industrial food and farming system.

With 21,000 employees in 66 countries and $15 billion in revenue, Monsanto is a biotech industry heavyweight. The monopolizer of seeds is the poster child for an industry that is the source of at least one-third of global anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, and is largely responsible for the depletion of soil, water and biodiversity. Not to mention the company’s marginalization—and sometimes terrorization—of millions of small farmers.

Norway Becomes World’s First Country to Ban Deforestation
Katie Pohlman | June 8, 2016 10:28 am | Comments
Norway has become the first country to ban deforestation. The Norwegian Parliament pledged May 26 that the government’s public procurement policy will be deforestation-free.

Rainforests are the lungs of the planet.
Any product that contributes to deforestation will not be used in the Scandinavian country. The pledge was recommended by Norwegian Parliament’s Standing Committee on Energy and Environment as part of the Action Plan on Nature Diversity. Rainforest Foundation Norway was the main lobbying power behind this recommendation and has worked for years to bring the pledge to existence.

The Incredible Coincidence of a Poisonous Tree Growing Next to Its Antidote

These trees, found in Mexico and parts of Central America, are an arborlogical wonder.

Explorers take heed: The jungles of Southern Mexico and Central America are ruled by a tangled gang of trees and vines. The vegetation of this region grows thick and quickly, making it almost impossible to navigate without a machete and a compass. Even more surprising, perhaps, is that the greenery itself is a hazard: There are at least 11 species of plants and trees in Central America which are considered poisonous to the touch and can cause severe contact dermatitis, i.e., a horrible burning rash.

Thai Tiger Temple probe discovers possible slaughterhouse

Published on Jun 9, 2016
Thai police investigators discovered four tigers kept in small cages on a private property in northwest Thailand.
Police suspect the location may have been a slaughterhouse, where tigers were killed before their remains were sold and smuggled abroad - but the owner says he legally registered the animals last year. Now, government officers are investigating dozens of other zoos and animal attractions.

Paraguay’s ‘climate change refugees’ still struggling

Published on Jun 9, 2016
Paraguay is hosting delegates from across the Americas to discuss ways to better deal with natural disasters.
Parts of the capital Asuncion are still under water eight months after heavy rains and floods.
Al J met people forced from their homes who consider themselves to be climate change refugees.

As the World Turns

Starting in December of 1968, whenever the United States sent a manned spacecraft into space, it did so from Cape Canaveral, Florida, with the flight directed by the Kennedy Space Center located on nearby Merritt Island. Both the launch site and the Space Center are located an hour east of Orlando, on the Atlantic Ocean. They are nearly 1,000 miles (1,600 km) from the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston, which acts as mission control soon after a shuttle takes flight. They are even further from NASA’s White Sands Test Facility in New Mexico, where many astronauts train; that site is about 1,750 miles (2,800 km) away.

But why Florida? It was chosen because it is as far south as one gets in the continental United States — or, more correctly, as close as the eastern seaboard of the United States gets to the Equator

Ways to Get Rid of Weeds Without Using Roundup

So what’s the big deal about Roundup? It’s a broad-spectrum systemic herbicide, which means it kills most plants that it comes in contact with. Roundup is also the most widely used herbicide in the world.

Solar War Continues in North Carolina: Nonprofit vs. Duke Energy

NC WARN installed solar panels on the roof of this Greensboro church for free and started selling the energy back to the church at significantly lower rates than Duke Energy would charge. Photo credit: NC WARN

The energy giant’s lost profits from NC WARN’s arrangement with Faith Community Church are minuscule, yet Duke Energy asked the North Carolina Utilities Commission last October to fine NC WARN up to $1,000 per day for selling energy to the church. At that time, it would have cost the nonprofit as much as $120,000.

Is it Too Soon to Consider Removing Giant Pandas From the Endangered Species List?

\

Due to a breeding boom over the past few years, giant pandas are making a strong recovery. Photo credit: Thinkstock

Sources have reportedly told Chinese authorities that ICUN experts are considering downgrading the giant panda from “endangered” in the wild to the still concerning but slightly lower category: “high risk of endangerment.”
