As the world warms, the ice melts

Published on Jul 22, 2016
It may no longer attract news headlines, although it should. Global warming is accelerating, and its effects are being felt around the globe.

Yet again, a monthly temperature record has been broken. At almost the same time that NOAA was announcing that June was the warmest in at least 136 years, the US’ National Snow and Ice Data Center confirmed that the sea ice extent in the Arctic was the lowest in 38 years of satellite data collection.

Earlier this year, after viewing images of reef destruction, he decided to go see it for himself. In February, he ventured to the Spratly Islands – roughly 300 miles west of the Philippines – and surveyed several reefs, including one that Chinese clam dredgers had heavily exploited.

“The damage was much worse than even I expected it to be,” Mr. McManus, professor of marine biology and fisheries at the University of Miami, says in a telephone interview. “I swam over one whole kilometer of reef before I saw a single living invertebrate. It was really massive, massive destruction.”

Germany's 62-Mile Bike Highway to Connect 10 Cities + 4 Universities

The idea was sparked six years ago when a cultural project caused the one-day closure of the road between Duisburg and Dortmund and more than three million people flooded the road on bikes, skates and feet. Last December, Germany's first stretch of bike highway opened for business between Mülheim an der Ruhr and Essen. Eventualy, the Radschnellweg will link 10 cities and four universities with 62 miles of bike highway.

Solar Impulse 2 completes flight around the world

Published on Jul 26, 2016
The solar-powered plane Solar Impulse 2 has completed its flight around the world.

It touched down in Abu Dhabi after taking off from Cairo on Sunday.

The zero-fuel aircraft has flown an estimated 30,000 kilometres, making it the first plane to circumnavigate the globe, powered only by the energy of the sun.

The founders and pilots of the Solar Impulse 2, Bertrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg, speak to Al Jazeera from Abu Dhabi.

apparently,how about this wonderful gem
beats them damn wars hhuh ..
Certain tribes in India train tree roots to form living bridges that last
for centuries and require little maintenance.
During the monsoon season in northeast India, gentle streams flowing
through the area’s valleys suddenly become torrents, impossible to cross
on foot. For 180 years, the solution has been to use nature to help
construct living bridges. Local tribes have devised a way to thread rubber
tree roots through the hollow canes of the Areca palm, patiently nurturing
them for years until they grow into sturdy bridges.

What Happens When the Water’s Gone?

Photograph by Randy Olson
The Ogallala aquifer, North America’s largest freshwater basin, has made modern life possible in the dry states of the U.S. Midwest. But it, like many other aquifers around the world, is rapidly draining and has little ability to recharge. Randy Olson takes us to America’s breadbasket to show us the people, industries, and ways of life impacted the most.

if it wasnt happening would there be any difference?
sounds promising re C40
pleased i di notice there were more advantages than not, re the entire project/opening etc

i best review my stance re such and give it some years of breathing space ha

5 Reasons Why the Critics Are Wrong About the Rio Olympics

The whole world held its breath in awe on Friday watching the Opening Ceremony for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. A day later I arrived back in the city that has become my second home while Mayor Eduardo Paes has been C40's chairperson for the last two and a half years. As I sit writing this article while enjoying the extraordinary new space in Porto Maravilha, though many have criticized the city for its Olympic preparations, it's impossible not to be moved by the significance of the first-ever Olympics to be held in South America.
