It may no longer attract news headlines, although it should. Global warming is accelerating, and its effects are being felt around the globe.
Yet again, a monthly temperature record has been broken. At almost the same time that NOAA was announcing that June was the warmest in at least 136 years, the US’ National Snow and Ice Data Center confirmed that the sea ice extent in the Arctic was the lowest in 38 years of satellite data collection.

Earlier this year, after viewing images of reef destruction, he decided to go see it for himself. In February, he ventured to the Spratly Islands – roughly 300 miles west of the Philippines – and surveyed several reefs, including one that Chinese clam dredgers had heavily exploited.
“The damage was much worse than even I expected it to be,” Mr. McManus, professor of marine biology and fisheries at the University of Miami, says in a telephone interview. “I swam over one whole kilometer of reef before I saw a single living invertebrate. It was really massive, massive destruction.”

Germany's 62-Mile Bike Highway to Connect 10 Cities + 4 Universities

The idea was sparked six years ago when a cultural project caused the one-day closure of the road between Duisburg and Dortmund and more than three million people flooded the road on bikes, skates and feet. Last December, Germany's first stretch of bike highway opened for business between Mülheim an der Ruhr and Essen. Eventualy, the Radschnellweg will link 10 cities and four universities with 62 miles of bike highway.
