Q&A: Donald Trump take on global warming and climate change

Trump and Climate Change

He has called climate change a Chinese-created hoax, but it remains unclear what impact the next US president, Donald Trump, will have on global efforts to avoid the excesses of global warming. Al Jazeera Science and Technology Editor Tarek Bazley and Senior Weather Presenter Everton Fox were in Marrakech last month at the latest UN Climate talks and will speak candidly on the mood of delegates, the effect a Trump administration is likely to have on international efforts, and why dramatic global action is required if we are to avoid the dangerous consequences of a warmer world.

BREAKING NEWS

Donald Trump has selected Scott Pruitt, the Oklahoma attorney general and a close ally of the fossil fuel industry, to run the E.P.A.

Wednesday, December 7, 2016 2:11 PM EST
President-elect Donald J. Trump has selected Scott Pruitt to run the Environmental Protection Agency, a transition official said, signaling Mr. Trump’s determination to dismantle President Obama’s efforts to counter climate change.
Mr. Pruitt, 48, has emerged as a hero to conservative activists. He is one of a number of Republican attorneys general who have formed an alliance with some of the nation’s top energy producers to push back against the Obama regulatory agenda, a 2014 investigation by The New York Times revealed.

Trump’s pick for environment agency chief sued government over climate rules
Oklahoma attorney-general Scott Pruitt has sought to reverse federal limits on greenhouse-gas emissions and air pollution.

Trump’s environment chief. US President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Oklahoma attorney-general Scott Pruitt to lead the US Environmental Protection Agency. Pruitt is an opponent of regulations to curb climate change and has questioned the science underlying global warming. He is also one of dozens of state officials who have mounted a legal challenge to President Obama’s limits on carbon emissions from power plants. Environmentalists have blasted Trump’s choice, but Pruitt, who must be confirmed by the Senate, will have support from fossil-fuel industry officials — many of whom have long asserted that the EPA has overreached its authority on climate change. Climate win. Indonesia’s government has taken a decision that could be a major boon for public health and the global climate. On Monday, its president announced a moratorium on all activities that could damage the nation’s peatlands. The move could help to prevent peatland fires, which blighted Indonesia last year and belch out millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide and can cause respiratory illness. Such fires are of growing concern to climate scientists who fear warming could exacerbate the events. (Washington Post)

Vanadium batteries become option for solar panel owners looking for lithium-ion alternatives

Solar panel owners turn to vanadium 'electrolyte fluid' battery

A new use for the metal vanadium is emerging as energy savvy consumers look for a better way of storing solar power than lithium-ion batteries.

8093584-3x2-340x227.jpg

Its claimed the batteries have a longer life span than lithium-ion versions and store at least four times the energy.

Researchers invented the first all-vanadium redox flow cell at the University of New South Wales in 1985.

The technology has been refined in recent years as demand for energy storage has increased.

A dramatic drop in giraffe populations over the past 30 years has seen the world's tallest land mammal classified as vulnerable to extinction.

Numbers have gone from around 155,000 in 1985 to 97,000 in 2015 according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The iconic animal has declined because of habitat loss, poaching and civil unrest in many parts of Africa

The Amazon rainforest Peru?

Peru's dirty gold - TechKnow
Published on Jul 24, 2016
The Amazon rainforest is home to 10 percent of the world's known species, and its ancient trees remove millions of tons of carbondioxide per year from the atmosphere. Its pristine forests, however, are increasingly under threat.
The soil underneath some of the rainforests is laced with gold, and each year, thousands of kilometres of the Amazon rainforest are devastated by illegal gold mining.
In Peru, where the rainforest covers about 60 percent of the country, illegal mining operations threaten local communities and turn swathes of rainforest into barren waste sites.
So what are the consequences of illegal mining for local communities and the ecosystem? What can be done to stop the destruction of the rainforest? And what happens to the dirty gold once it leaves Peru?

The Year in Pictures

Photograph by Randy Olson
A year’s worth of photographs at National Geographic adds up—2,290,225 frames to be exact, taken by 91 photographers assigned to illustrate over 200 stories. Our editors pore over the images that come in from the field, choosing the best of the best from thousands of “almosts.” The choice sometimes comes down to something tiny, like the position of bird’s wings in flight.

Global Warming is terrible and I'm opposed to it. A mere 12,000 years ago my house would have been under a glacier. But then it had to go globally warming up and melt most of the ice. Ice is great: cold, lifeless and bleak. We've got to get rid of the Global Warming and get back to the good old days before we had food and greenery. Who's with me? Let's get Trump to build a giant igloo over the country just to play it safe.

Not really. In my view, the idiots are the people who can't quite understand satire.

Global warming, or whatever it is called at present is a highly contentious issue and nobody wants to admit they were wrong about it and change their minds. So it is usually pointless to talk directly about it. The alarmists ponitifcate endlessly that the "science is settled and everyone agrees with us". The other side points out that it isn't so. The first side insists it is and calls the other side a few choice names as well.

And so I prefer to point out, satirically, that the Earth has in fact, unarguably warmed up and when it's really cold, that sucks. Warm is definitely better. Carrying on about warming to the extent there is any, is hardly a "bad" thing.

I'll disagree with one sentence here. "The alarmists ponitifcate endlessly that the "science is settled"

Okay.

Yes I get that. I say the pro-warming side claims endlessly the science is settled. You claim (pontificate?) it IS settled in their minds. Um....thanks, I guess.
You see, the idea that the science is settled is a Fact, not an opinion to be debated.

Has Europe Been Right All Along to Renounce GE Crops?

Editor's note: The terms GE (genetic engineering) and GMO (genetically modified organism) are often used interchangeably, but their meanings are different. GMOs, which are produced when plant breeders select genetic traits that may also occur naturally, have been around for centuries. Common examples are seedless watermelons and modern broccoli. The subject of much recent debate are GE foods, which have only been around in recent decades and are produced by transferring genes between organisms. The resulting GE organisms—either plant- or in the case of GE salmon, animal-based—would not otherwise occur in nature. This article is about GE foods.

. Only five EU nations—the Czech Republic, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia and Spain—grow GE crops and in such minor amounts that all five countries make up less than 0.1 percent of GE cultivation worldwide.

It appears Europe has been right all along to renounce GE crops. An in-depth examination recently published by the New York Times found that GE crops have largely failed to achieve two of the technology's primary objectives: to increase crop yields and decrease pesticide use.

Pesticides in particular have come under increasing fire in recent years, not only for their negative impact on human health and wildlife, but for decimating populations of key food crop pollinators; specifically bees, which we rely on to pollinate a third of food crops.

It appears Europe has been right all along to ... READ MORE

Australia risks losing its share of Antarctica, experts warn

The Federal Government is being warned Australia is in danger of losing its position as an Antarctic leader, as well as its claim over the frozen continent, unless it maintains funding for its scientific research program.

i can see another ANZAC joint effort to maintain our countries presence in the Antaric region

Australia is one of the 12 original signatories to the Treaty which ensures Antarctica remains a conservation zone: free from mining, exploration and crucially, military bases.

While the economic value of Antarctica cannot be measured, there could be massive mineral, oil and gas reserves beneath the surface, and a virtually untouched krill fishery off the coast.

Dr Bergin said Australia has no Navy ships that are capable of sailing into the icy territory and points out the New Zealand Navy patrols the eastern parts of Antarctica each year looking for illegal fishing activity.

Study Shows that Methane Gas Emissions Are Surging Over the Past Decade

A new climate study shows that emissions of the heat-trapping gas methane has surged in the past ten years at a far higher level than scientists had expected. The findings carry grave implications for climate change because methane traps heat at 20 times the rate as carbon dioxide, which is the most common greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. According to the study, which was published in the peer-reviewed journal Environmental Research Letters, the surge in methane gas emissions could produce a "tipping point" that will make it almost impossible to limit global warming to 2 degrees celsius above the pre-industrial average. Methane emissions come from a variety of sources, such as fracking, oil drilling, coal excavation, thawing of tundra in the Arctic circle due to global warming, and agriculture.

Incredibly thin Arctic sea ice shocks researchers
Rare winter expedition near northern Norway finds weak ice that is increasingly vulnerable to storms.

WEB_arctice2_NICE2015_Marcos_Porcires_22Jun2015_UNIS.jpg

A daring 2015 expedition that collected rare measurements of the Arctic in winter found that sea ice near the North Pole was thinner and weaker than expected.

“This thinner and younger ice in the Arctic today works very differently than the ice we knew,”

says Mats Granskog, a sea-ice researcher at the Norwegian Polar Institute in Tromsø and chief scientist on the expedition, called the Norwegian Young Sea Ice (N-ICE2015) project. “It moves much faster. It breaks up more easily. It’s way more vulnerable to storms and winds.”

Geologists say they are close to creating the hottest borehole in the world.

They are drilling into the heart of a volcano in the south-west of Iceland.

They have told the BBC that they should reach 5km down, where temperatures are expected to exceed 500C (932F), in the next couple of weeks.

The researchers want to bring steam from the deep well back up to the surface to provide an important source of energy.

A global map of roadless areas and their conservation status
Road rage.

While 80% of Earth’s land remains roadless, this area is broken up into around 600,000 patches and only 7% of these are larger than 100 square kilometres. The team behind this new global map say roadless areas need to be valued for their conservation benefits, and these wildernesses need more protection. (BBC; Science paper)

Roads have done much to help humanity spread across the planet and maintain global movement and trade. However, roads also damage wild areas and rapidly contribute to habitat degradation and species loss. Ibisch et al. cataloged the world's roads. Though most of the world is not covered by roads, it is fragmented by them, with only 7% of land patches created by roads being greater than 100 km2. Furthermore, environmental protection of roadless areas is insufficient, which could lead to further degradation of the world's remaining wildernesses.

Post Carbon Institute has released two reports authored by Earth scientist J. David Hughes assessing the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) most recent projections for domestic tight ("shale") oil and shale gas production.

The reports 2016 Tight Oil Reality Check and 2016 Shale Gas Reality Check evaluate the EIA's increasingly optimistic projections in light of actual production data (through June 2016) and the agency's own previous estimates. The reports raise critical questions about the veracity and volatility of the EIA's estimates, questions that are especially important as the Trump Administration sets its domestic energy policy.

The reports raise critical questions about the veracity and volatility of the ... READ MORE
